Wilhelm Bauer was born on December 23, 1822. A German inventor and engineer who built several hand-powered submarines. After his experience in the German/Danish war for Schleswig-Holstein, he quickly developed a plan to build a new type of submersible ship to help break blockades. While he was plagued by shortcomings in funding, and his own submarine designs had many mechanical and practical problems, several aspects of his designs are found today in submarine design, and in 1960 the German Bundesmarine renamed a Type XXI submarine Wilhelm Bauer after him.

Visited the U-Boot (U-2540) Wilhelm Bauer Museum in Bremerhaven. I was supposed to have an appointment, but it got canceled last minute, so i made use of my time by exploring Bremerhaven a bit.

U-2540, a Type XXI U-boat scuttled at the end of World War II, and refloated and refitted in 1957 for use by the Kreigsmarine. After a collision in 1980, the Wilhelm Bauer was converted into a museum exhibit.
