“In Wildness Is The Salvation Of The World”, said Henry Thoreau back in the 19th Century. Through the years, humans have progressed through an era of technological evolution: From Mechanization to Industrialization, to Automation, & in the 21st Century, Artificial Intelligence. At the same time, we have set off a ticking time bomb, for the sixth Mass Extinction in the history of Planet Earth, confining millions of living creatures to lifeless image, video & audio fossils to conserve their memory.
Evidence of fast vanishing ecosystems exists all over the world, from dwindling elephant populations in Africa, dying coral reefs in Madagascar, the demise of the Franklin Bumblebee in Oregon to the frogless jungles of Costa Rica. But none can fathom the number of unidentified & nameless flora, fauna & insect species we might have already driven to an early grave. Global warming & pollution have brought about significant changes in our backyards. Gone are the days when people used to feed wild sparrows and bulbuls, grow their own plants & vegetables, & leave the wetlands and forests untouched by human hands.
Though we cannot bring a dead wolf or albatross back to life, we can through the use of technology protect & preserve vulnerable lifeforms along with their local habitats. Using GPS enabled satellite collars for elephants, bio-acoustic spectrograms for frogs, camera trapping & aerial imagery, one can keep track of trends & changes in wildlife populations, better equipping us to identify & prevent situations that might cause an extinction.
However, the unanswered question still rings in every human mind. What if an entire species goes extinct on our watch? How will we tell the generations to come, what sitting on an elephant’s back felt like: The bristles of its hair, the pungent smell of elephant dung, & those elephantine eyelashes and dark eyes that stare at you, imploring you to allow the animal a chance to survive, a chance to live. The Javan rhino, Sumatran orangutan, African wild dog, Indus river dolphin, & so many more species lie helpless on the endangered species list, begging for a new lease of life if only we would stop indirectly killing them with our toxic garbage & pollution. Because some things can never be captured on camera or video, and every single creature from the majestic tiger, to the chattering monkey, deserves to live in harmony with us humans on the only known planet that supports life, our own Mother Earth.
Every struggle that an in-the-field wild dolphin study may throw at me - every equipment failure, every trip cut short by boat engine trouble or storms approaching, every long, arduous day spent baking in the oppressive sun in a small boat or kayak, every never-ending, tedious hour spent comparing photographs and analyzing data - it’s all worth it for the moments like these...the moments where time seems to slow to the pace of the setting sun, where the water is calm yet the dolphins are active, their smooth backs glistening with an orange sparkle of twilight as they surface. It is in these moments that I find myself overwhelmed at the beauty of God’s creation...it’s these moments that I remember forever...they can’t be forgotten.
