When I decided to try dressing femme, the biggest personal hurdle was that male-pattern baldness has really done a number on me and I’m essentially totally bald (well, I could grow a great comb-over but no-one wants that). So I bought an ‘unstyled’ synthetic wig online which essentially mimics having a head of equal shoulder-length hair that you can style yourself with the usual hair accessories (clips, ties etc).

My wig cost NZ$350 which is up there for a synthetic but peanuts compared to a human-hair wig which can go into the $1000s. I can’t really afford one of those so I make do with the ‘plastic fantastic.’ It has some (ahem) quirks - such as its propensity to go flying in a gust of wind, become statically charged or be a magnet for people who ‘want a go’ with it. But the worst thing about it is how unconvincing it is up close - it has a weird sheen and the hair doesn’t sit quite right.
