Caretaker holding the hand of blindfolded whumpee tightly. Maybe whumpee is facing some past medical trauma, like being sedated or having stitches done. Maybe whumpee is undercover, or a villain, and Caretaker is forced to pretend that they want this to happen.

The Whumpee knows it’s a nightmare. The world around them has all the markings of it. The clouds above are a dark purple gray like a storm is rolling in, and yet the sky below the cover of clouds is pitch black. That blackness flows seamlessly into that of the lake water that their boat is floating on. The lake’s waves start to get white caps as they roll over themselves in their rush to reach land. It’s a familiar nightmare, and the Whumpee’s boat is the ultimate tell as to why. The banged up interior, the broken oars, the ancient outboard motor: they’re sitting in their big brother’s boat from twenty years ago. The Whumpee closes their eyes in their dream, knuckles braced on the edge of the boat as it starts to tip to each side with the waves. It’s coming. The bad part is coming. The lake makes a low moaning sound as the wind picks up around the Whumpee, throwing their hair around and making their breath hard to find. The Whumpee opens their eyes and finds themselves leaning over the edge of the boat with their forearms submerged under the water. Another pair of hands is holding theirs from beneath the surface. The underwater hands are flimsy, and every time the Whumpee grabs them and pulls them up, they cease to belong to a person and become floppy, dislodged reeds. “Come on!” the Whumpee growls as they reach back in. The water relentlessly slaps the side of the boat and sprays them every time they reach back in. “Come on!!” It’s here that the Whumpee startles awake. They are disoriented, no longer floating and drenched from sweat. They’re on a couch in a room that has the light of a flickering TV and the quiet sounds of the Caretaker absently playing video games. The Whumpee tries to clear their throat, but they can barely eke out the noise. The Caretaker takes a long sip from a beer bottle as the Whumpee watches. “You didn’t miss a math test and you are wearing pants,” the Caretaker says. The Whumpee lays back down and stares at the ceiling as the Caretaker lets out a subdued burp. “Just covering our bases in case it was another type of dream.”

Nova's afternoon walks have gotten a little strange ever since those new guys moved in around the corner. She only ever sees one of them, though, and he never stops to talk. She must be looking too deep into how weird that is, right?
cw: implied kidnapping
Something is weird about Nova’s new neighbors, she’s decided. She doesn’t live next to them so she isn’t able to see exactly what goes on there all the time, but she lives close enough that she sees them sometimes on her afternoon walks. There’s two people who live there, both young in their late teens, maybe early twenties, right around her age. Only she still lives at home with her parents despite her full time job. So how did these two kids manage to obtain an, albeit old, but still decent house? She’s never asked them, hasn’t even spoken to them. She only sees one of them anyway, the lanky, tall man with pin straight black hair that falls to his mid back. He always smiles at her and waves, and she smiles politely back and waves, but he smiles weird. Maybe she’s just looking too much into normal behaviors, she does tend to do that, but she can’t shake that something weird is happening.
Today, she’s walking by, like usual, only this time she spots someone sitting on the front steps. It’s not the man she normally sees, his truck is gone, meaning the other man, the one sitting there alone on the front steps, staring at nothing is home alone. Hm.
Before she can assess if this is a good idea or not, she smiles and waves, and calls out, “Hello!” In a polite, cheery voice. It seems to startle the boy out of his daze, and he turns his head to look at her. His face changes from blank to wary in an instant, though he doesn’t move.
Nova fumbles a bit, uncertain if she made him uncomfortable, “Sorry, uh.. I didn’t mean to scare you..” The man continues to stare warily at her, like he might jump up and run inside at any moment. “You just moved in, right?” She feels awkward now, trying to start a conversation with someone clearly enjoying quiet time on their front steps alone. Maybe she should’ve just stayed quiet.
The man nods.
“Do you like it here so far?”
Another nod.
Nova stays quiet for a little bit. She really should just walk away and let this guy have his alone time in peace.
“That other guy you live with, is he your roommate?”
At the mention of the other guy, the man sitting there goes completely tense. He nods again, stiffer. Odd.
“Well..” Nova frowns, then shrugs, smiling again. “I hope you guys like it here. I also hope you aren't paying an arm and a leg for that place. That old man never had a thing fixed on that property.”
The man nods again, still tense, and Nova takes that as her queue to leave. She begins walking again, trying to be quick so she can round the corner back to her house.
She figures that maybe they’re simply a bit strange, unlikely friends, maybe lovers or something. She just cannot shake that feeling that something is going on there and she doesn’t like it. She just has no evidence or proof, and the guy sitting outside seemed, if anything, socially awkward. Not like he’s being held captive or on the run or something. He doesn’t look like the type to be a criminal. Then again, people always say that about criminals.
By the time she gets back to her house, she’s accepted that this is going to be something she thinks about, and maybe something that she gets involved in, depending on the severity.
She shakes her head. She is definitely overthinking this whole thing
The basic female need to see a guy stuttering somethinh incoherent as his hands shake to the point of his fingers looking like they're seizing, making him unable to even grip at whoever he's talking with as he tries to. Bonus if whatever he was trying to warn someone else about, is already coming, but no one can understand what it is before it's too late.
The Whumpee’s breaths start to come in and out in heavy gasps as they sit in their chair. “I remember,” they say, struggling to stay connected to reality as they get to an impossible part of their story. “I remember being… pinned down.” The words come out as anvils. The therapist Caretaker watches them from their own chair, trying not to let their face show anything but stalwart presence. It’s clear the story can’t continue for now. The Whumpee’s eyes keep checking where the Caretaker’s hands and knees are in between glances at the door. Everything and nothing is staying still as they panic in that contained room. The Caretaker makes a slow and deliberate move to grab the keys that are clipped to their belt loop with one hand while the other is raised in the air. They throw the keys across the floor, and they slide into the side of the Whumpee’s shoe. Both of their hands are now raised. “Those will get you anywhere in this building. Absolutely anywhere. Without me.” The Caretaker emphasizes this last part as the Whumpee keeps their eyes trained on them. “I am staying right where I am. You don’t have to stay here at all. I will be in this exact spot whether you decide to go or not.” The Whumpee’s breaths now come as quiet groans through a veil of slow moving tears, their mind trying desperately to override their biology and programmed fear response. The Whumpee uses their palms to wipe at their cheeks before reaching down and snatching the keys. They tense their muscles like they are going to stand up… but they don’t. They just hold the keys tightly in one fist while the other rubs their own brow. The two sit across from each other in a stalemate and in the heavy air of disclosure. The Whumpee nods at the Caretaker’s pant loop on the other side of where their keys were. “Not offering me the gun though, are you?” the Whumpee asks half-jokingly through shaky breaths. The Caretaker shrugs lightly with a raised brow and ventures to joke back with their old friend: “i mean… I said you could go, not go nuts. Be serious, pal.”
