Catch you later, Atlantis!

the R/V Atlantis is a research vessel operated by WHOI. she is the current tender ship for the Alvin submersible. i started drawing this to celebrate her big return home after four years, but today she departs once again so i guess its a farewell drawing now

i got to see her IRL! my beautiful wife <333 (neil is also there i guess)

her gear is based on those exoskeletons used for lifting heavy things without breaking your back (Atlantis’ heavy duty A-frame is specially designed to lift the 45000 pound Alvin)

Oct 16, 2021 -R/V Atlantis in Wood's Hole, MA

On Wednesday in Woods Hole, after a day off island, while waiting for the ferry to head back to the Island, I noticed the ship R/V Atlantis was at the dock nearby. Woods Hole is its home port, but it is rarely in port because it is a scientific research vessel that spends most of its time away from port traveling the world's oceans conducting oceanic research. It is owned by the U.S. Navy, but it's operation is controlled by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution(WHOI) located in Woods Hole, MA.

Here is some info about the vessel that I found on the WHOI website:

"It is one of the most sophisticated research vessels afloat, and it is specifically outfitted for launching and servicing the Alvin human occupied submersible."

"Delivered to Woods Hole in April 1997, Atlantis was built with six science labs and storage spaces, precision navigation systems, seafloor mapping sonar, and satellite communications. The ship’s three winches, three cranes, machine shop, and specialized hangars were specifically designed to support Alvin and other vehicles of the National Deep Submergence Facility."

In addition to being markers of our maritime past, shipwrecks are home to a vast number of marine species – like these frilled anemones on the wreck of the Portland in Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. 

Next week, researchers from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Marine Imaging Technologies will be visiting Portland and other shipwrecks to assess the state of the wrecks. They'll be livestreaming their expedition, and you can tune in while they journey deep beneath the ocean's surface!

Quick, did this leatherback sea turtle just eat a jelly or a plastic bag?

Plastic pollution is a big problem in today’s oceans. Leatherback turtles feeding in this contaminated “soup” are very likely to ingest some of these plastics. As part of the TurtleCam project, a collaboration with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, our Anderson Cabot Center scientist Dr. Kara Dodge filmed leatherback turtles eating hundreds of sea jellies that bear a remarkable resemblance to single-use plastic shopping bags.
