I wanted to share one of the books I picked up to further my education of the struggle for equal rights in this country: bell hooks’ “Killing Rage.” It’s a powerful book of essays written from the black feminist perspective. While her voice speaks directly to Black Americans, this book would be helpful to white folks who want their eyes opened to the many ways we contribute to the problem through our learned and unexamined perceptions of the black community, through our silence, through a philosophy of “sameness” which smacks of ‘all lives’ bs. This is an excellent read for those who want to examine white privilege and understand racism as a systemic problem which we ALL benefit from daily, rather than one’s individual moral failing. Swipe for a couple of passages that I wanted to highlight which felt particularly resonant with what we are dealing with right now. I hope you decide to pick up a copy and read further! #blacklivesmatter #booksonracism #bellhooks #killingrageendingracism #endracism #whiteprivelege https://www.instagram.com/p/CBZRN68BnYW/?igshid=1q5vwo2jek049
This morning the trial for the police officer who murdered George Floyd started. I immediately thought about the convenience store worker who called the cops because he thought Mr. Floyd was trying to pass a counterfeit $20 bill. I wondered aloud if he would’ve done the same thing if it was a white person with the same $20 bill. 🤔🤔 • • — • • I am working on the second piece in a series of 4 bags that uses the words and ideas of James Baldwin to illustrate racism and its implications on Black people. By the way, Instagram trolls, you posting your own hateful agenda to my pics is a joke and a waste of time because I have and will continue to delete & block your nonsense! 😂🤣 • • • • • #racism #blacklivesmatter #whiteprivelege #georgefloyd #humanity #justice #art #activism #jamesbaldwin #bag #inprogress #totebag #WhoAreUCarrying #SKWiLBUR #ItsAllInTheBag (at Brooklyn, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNApqxVg_2m/?igshid=rvu8mmrqharp
I found this book, White Fragility, by Robin DiAngelo to be really helpful around understanding White Privilege and racism. “A necessary book for all people invested in societal change” - Claudia Rankine. The first response of 99% of white people when they start into a conversation after seeing the title is “I’m not racist”. No one wants to acknowledge the inherent racism that we all must unlearn, and be aware of. Robin D’Angelo writes with excellent experience, and vulnerably acknowledges her own mistakes along the way. If we grow up in a racist society how can we not hold racism within us? It is only a failure if we deny what’s there, because then we won’t learn, grow from it. I know that there was racism in my family history. I know I learned that growing up. #shame #whitefragility #whiteprivelege #understanding #racism #georgefloyd https://www.instagram.com/p/CKMc2INM_10/?igshid=1e765k43a42mj

No Resistance
Walk around the capitol building strapped. No resistance. Walk into the “guarded” capitol building uninvited. No resistance. Cops just stand back and let you in. No resistance. Break windows and doors. No resistance. Storm the senate floor, make yourself at home in the senate offices and leave notes on desks. No resistance. Completely disrupt Congress. No resistance.
Had these been black people every one of them would be dead. Resistance.

This @nathanmacintosh bit on #whiteprivelege and #whitewomen tickled me. 😭😩😂 Also, from my LIVE last night about how “Aint nobody thinking about you” and how whiteness will center itself as a way to look/feel better, important, right. Whiteness will center itself so much that it will oppress itself for the sake of not having to own the privilege of privilege. Lol!... this is another way that well meaning white folk become Karen’s or Miss Millies. You think, “We’ll that’s not me...” and you other yourself to the point that it becomes violent. “THATS. NOT. ME.” Or “I NEVER OWNED SLAVES.” You’ve heard it or you’ve thought it or you’ve said it. 👩🏾💻 It doesn’t have to be hard. Own yr privilege and actually do the work you claim to be doing with your #BlackLivesMatter bracelets and your adopted Haitian children. 👀 —- We waste no captions: Register for the #IDontWantToBeAKaren colecture with me and @theamonyee.
