Sight  begins  to  blur  whilst  reading  the  nth  book  of  the  day,  focus  at  last  slipping  after  endless  hours  spent  doing  naught  but  extracting  &  collecting  information  of  all  sorts  from  the  unending  stacks  of  books  gifted  to  oneself  by  Wammy  and  Roger  alike,  in  their  hopes  of  transforming  the  youth  into  a  proper  successor  to  the  heavy  title  of  ‘L’.  

Before  free  hand  manages  to  come  into  contact  with  the  current  book’s  page  &  turn  it  around  once  more,  one  small  yet  familiar  voice  breaks  the  last  shreds  of  the  first  letter’s  concentration  and  navy  hues  search  for  the  source  of  the  sound;  soon  thereafter  taking  in  the  younger’s  frame.  The  child’s  statement  settles  in  almost  instantaneously,  yet  hesitation  lingers  for  a  few  moments  more  as  A  glances  elliptically  at  his  book;  before  ultimately  responding  affirmatively.   ❛     ... Alright,     ❜ 

Gloomy  eyes  dive  onto  the  youth  again  and  he  muses  about  his  remaining  options:  of  offering  Near  the  chance  to  broaden  his  studies  ahead  of  time  &  productively  occupy  his  idle  time,  or  unnecessarily  force  him  to  exist  in  boredom  until  the  older’s  wake.  In  due  course  though,  the  occupied  hand  is  extended  towards  the  fellow  orphan  and  the  most  probable  successor  inquires;  in  spite  of  knowing  that  regardless  of  the  boy’s  summary,  he  would  reread  the  book  by  himself  later  on  to  memorize  each  remaining  bit  of  it,  as  per  his  established  studying  habit.   ❛    ... Could  you  summarize  this  book  by  the  time  I  wake  up  ?     ❜   Blues  stare  into  grays  until  the  book  is  received  &  only  then  does  A  sit  down,  eyelids  closing  in  exhaustion  and  falling  into  unconsciousness  instants  thereafter,  uncaring  about  the  cold  floor  or  its  uncomfortable  texture.

death,    as   ryuzaki   had   come   to   learn,    was   a   complicated   thing.    he   didn’t   believe   in   an    𝔞𝔣𝔱𝔢𝔯𝔩𝔦𝔣𝔢    when   he   was   still   alive.    ＤＥＡＴＨ   ＷＡＳ   ＳＵＰＰＯＳＥＤ   ＴＯ   ＢＥ   ＴＨＥ   ＥＮＤ.    and   yet,    as   felt   his   heartbeat   rise,    felt   his   chest   tighten   with   pain,    felt   his    consciousness    go   and   eyes   flutter   closed   as   light   yagami’s   face    𝖇𝖚𝖗𝖓𝖊𝖉    into   the   last    moments   of   his   mortal   life.  .  .    only   to   open   again   moments   later,    this   time   on   the   other   side   of   the   room,    watching   his   now    𝕝𝕚𝕗𝕖𝕝𝕖𝕤𝕤    body   being   cradled   by   the   other   man.    no   one   acknowledged   him,    even   knew   he   was    there.    

a   few   weeks   had   passed   when   he   learned   he   could   go   wherever   he   wanted.    sitting   in   the   now    𝚖𝚎𝚊𝚗𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚕𝚎𝚜𝚜    task   force   headquarters   was   disheartening,    𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠.    he   wanted   more   than    anything    to   be   somewhere   else.  .  .    and   then   he   was.    wammy’s   house,    the   place   where   he   grew   up.    the   halls   swarmed   with   children,    giggling,    just   like   L   had   all   those   years   ago.    hands   fit   into   pockets,    back   and   shoulders   hunch   slightly   as   feet   carry   him   through   the   slowly  -  evacuating   halls    (    classes   must   be   starting   again.    these   minds    must    be   nourished,    must   prepare   to   replace    𝔥𝔦𝔪.    the   thought   that   the   purpose   of   this   orphanage   would   soon   be   fulfilled   made   the   man    𝖘𝖍𝖚𝖉𝖉𝖊𝖗    ).    the   thought   of   his   replacement   comes   to   mind,    that   white  -  haired   boy   who   so   closely   resembled   him   must   have    heard    the   news   by   now.    HOW   WAS   HE   TAKING   THIS?    WOULD   THE   PRESSURE   BE   TOO   MUCH   FOR   HIM?    

near   was   sitting   by   himself,    some   undeterminable   toy   in   his   grasp.    tired   eyes   observe   him,    just   for   a   moment    ——    then   the   boy    𝙖𝙙𝙙𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙨    him.    eyes   widen,    shocked    ——    could   he   see   him?    two   weeks   had   gone   by,    he’d   felt   people   gaze    right    into   his   eyes,    and.  .  .     nothing.    even    L    couldn’t   explain   this.    he   didn’t   know   anyone   who   could.    “    you   heard    correctly.    ”    lips   purse   together,    eyes   glance   around   the   room.    “    i’m   dead.    i   just.  .  .    don’t    know   why   i’m   still   here.    ”

an   orphan’s   life   is   a   challenging   one.    first,    there’s   the    weight    of   knowing   that   somehow,    and   for   some   reason,    you   were    𝚊𝚋𝚊𝚗𝚍𝚘𝚗𝚎𝚍.    in   L’s   case,    one   parent   succumbed   to   illness.    he   never   blamed   his   mother   for   dying    ——    but   what    father    left   their   young   child   alone?    again,    he   wasn’t   supposed   to   be   gone   for   very   long.  .  .    regardless,    he   felt    𝘢𝘣𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘥    ——    years   on   the   streets   with   people   failing   to   find   a   wandering   child    proved    it.    quillsh   wammy    ——    watari    ——    was   a   godsend,    a    𝔥𝔢𝔯𝔬    that   saved   the   young   lawliet   from   the   streets.    but   he’d   be    stupid    to   think   that   all   orphans   had   the   same   experience   he   did.    this   boy   he’d   spent   the   past   hour   talking   to   was    𝕟𝕖𝕨𝕖𝕣    to   wammy’s   house    (    that,    or   he   became    aware    of   what   exactly   an   orphanage   was.    or   he   was   just    lonely   ).    regardless,    the   boy’s   request   wasn’t    𝖔𝖉𝖉    or   OUT   OF   PLACE.    L   had   made   the   same   request   before,    he’s   sure.  .  .    “    i’ll   be   just   down   the   hall,    i   promise.    i’m   not   leaving   quite   yet.    ”    he   pauses,    a   small   smile   casting   lips   upward,    a   hand   slowly   extends   outward    ——    an   open   invitation   to   take   it.    “    i’m   just   going   to   talk   to   𝗺𝗿.    𝘄𝗮𝗺𝗺𝘆    ——    you   can    come,    if   you’d   like.    ”

words   sting   just   as   they   would   were   lawliet    alive.    being   L   was   hard    enough,    he   can’t   imagine   being   a    replacement,    a    𝚏𝚊𝚔𝚎    in   the   eyes   of   everyone   who   knows   the    truth.    L   IS   DEAD,    AND   HE’S   NEVER   COMING   BACK.    NEAR   IS   A   FAKE,    A   SECOND   L!    “    you   didn’t.    ”    voice   is   curt,    almost    distorted.    perhaps   it   came   with   the   whole    being   dead   thing.    perhaps   it   came   from    not   having   vocal   cords.    he’s   been   in   near’s   shoes   before,    felt   the   ever  -  increasing   pressure   coming   from   those   who   opposed   kira.    𝙨𝙖𝙫𝙚   𝙪𝙨   𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢   𝙩𝙝𝙚   𝙩𝙮𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙩,    their   timid   voices   beg.    𝙬𝙚'𝙧𝙚   𝙩𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙙   𝙤𝙛   𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜   𝙞𝙣   𝙛𝙚𝙖𝙧.    lawliet   knows   too   well   how   it   feels   to   start   from   nothing,    to   assume   what   they   don’t   know   yet   not   know   what   to   assume.    this   case   is    unique,    like   nothing   the   world   had   seen.    the   existence   of   the   death   note   brought   a   new   level   to   the   case,    one   that   came   without   training   or   precedence.    it   was    his    to   solve.  .  .    maybe    that’s    why   he   can’t   leave.    maybe   it’s    kira.    “    i   know   this   case   is   hard.    i’m   trying   to    ｈｅｌｐ.    ”    is   it   for   himself?    is   it   for   nate?    even    𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩    remained   to   be   seen.

it   feels   like   you   have   been   set   ablaze   with   the   double - edged   words,     𝖎𝖓𝖘𝖎𝖉𝖎𝖔𝖚𝖘   𝖕𝖔𝖎𝖘𝖔𝖓   lapping   at   fresh   wounds.     YOU   ARE   NOT   SCORNED,     no   yet   an   outcast   in   your   own   kingdom.     venom   seeps   into   his   maw,     visage   frozen   into   such   vicious   scowl.     “     that’s   why   we   need   THE   UPPER   HAND;     don’t   you   understand   the   entire   investigation   relies   on   this?     “     who   does   this   stranger   think   they   are,     words   laced   with   these   tones   of   𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐲?     *     this   is   the   price   you   pay   for   donning   mortal   skin,     raw   power   hidden   carefully   so   as   to   be   undetectable   (   until   it   isn’t   ).     the   case   has   evolved,     SO   MANY   DIFFERENT   HANDS   MOVE   THEIR   PIECES               do   you   truly   think   you   will   achieve   victory?     𝗁𝖾   𝗐𝗁𝗈   𝗂𝗌   𝗄𝗂𝗇𝗀   needs   not   interfere   with   these   pawns,     soon   to   be   cast   aside   when   𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬   𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐞   is   done.     his   earpiece   seems   to   burn   a   mark   into   his   skin,     a   bitter   reminder   there   will   always   be   another   dragon   ＫＩＲＡ   has   to   slay   to   uphold   𝑝𝑒𝑎𝑐𝑒   in   his   kingdom.     “     as   LEADER   of   this   task   force,     i’m   going   to   do   what’s   best   for   my   people   &.*   for   this   case               i   can’t   let   you   pass   up   on   an   opportunity   like   this   one.     not   when   we’re   so   close.     “     HOW   IRONIC   THIS   IS;     they   have   always   been   close,     culprit   lurking   under   their   noses   this   entire   time.     perhaps   this   facade   is   enough   to   outwit   those   who   have   sought   to   tear   your   kingdom   down,     until   not   even   the   legends   of   your   glory   remain.

it’s   been    too    long   since   he’s   been   back,    since   this   ghostly   frame   has    𝖍𝖆𝖚𝖓𝖙𝖊𝖉    these   familiar   halls.    everything   feels    off,    from   the   ill  -  fitting   sneakers   on   his   feet,    even   to   the   way   his   shirt   hangs   off   his   body.    had   he   truly   spent   his   childhood   here?    had   he   been   out    longer    than   he   stayed   in   the   first   place?    he’d   left   this   place   so   long   ago,    how   strange   it   was   that   he   was   idolized   here.    wasn’t   he   a   child   once   too?    he   wasn’t   even   sure   these   children    knew    who   he   was.    perhaps   watari   hadn’t    𝕤𝕡𝕚𝕝𝕝𝕖𝕕    this   secret   of   his.    “    you,    ”    that   little   kid   had   been    𝚜𝚝𝚊𝚛𝚒𝚗𝚐    for   some   time   now,    ever   since   the   man   had   entered   the   building.    “    what’s   your   name?    ”    @whitedice​,
