The catfish I never used when having a mon that knew Surf was necessary for progression.In all my Hoenn games(And some entries beyond) I favored raising a Magikarp into Gyarados for some reason.

Whiscash are extremely territorial, and they will claim entire ponds as their territory.
Should a foe approach, Whiscash will trash and shake the ground by striking its caudal fin against the bed of the pond or swamp, causing tremors up to three miles in radius.
As a result of Whiscash's ability to create tremors, it became extremely attuned to noticing vibrations in the water, dulling their need for eyesight and making their vision worse, and as such they can detect earthquakes that are to come.
Whiscash will eat anything that they see moving, and they don't care if they swallow mud getting to their prey.
In the past, people thought the tremors Whiscash set off where small earthquakes.
