I’m one of those kind of folks that don’t tend to go out of their way to clean their firearms. Some folk I know will clean every single spot on their firearm after each and every range session. I’m not as fanatical about cleaning my firearms, even though I do rather enjoy the overall process. For me, when I have nothing better to do and want to sit back and relax, I’ll grab some of my gun cleaning items from Brownells, sit down and do a cleaning session. Sometimes I’ll clean a handful of firearms in one sitting. Now what about revolvers? Many folk will say that a revolver is more reliable than an autoloader and requires far less cleaning than it’s semi-automatic counterparts. How often should you clean your revolver? Of course the fanatics say every time you shoot it, but what about realistically? Let’s find out.

In my opinion, revolvers require far less cleaning regiments than your typical auto loading pistol. Revolvers are strictly mechanical devices that do not rely on the pressures from the spent round to cycle and operate the action. Revolvers have been around much longer than autoloading pistols and many folk love them due to their simplistic nature. I can concur with this sentiment, however revolvers do need a periodic cleaning and inspection of the parts. Revolvers typically are held together by a series of screws. These screws vary in sizes, but are normally a flat head. You should have a precision set of driver bits such as one of the Magna Tip sets that Brownells sells. These come in real handy when trying to disassemble your revolver for maintenance and or repair. The last thing you want to do is use the wrong screwdriver and damage the screw or worse slip off and mess up the finish on your revolver. A good cleaning mat is also recommended, but not necessary. Ensure you have your preferred cleaning kit, with brushes for the bore and cylinder. A small pick and a tooth brush is always helpful for getting those stubborn areas clean.

My simple method for a cleaning of any of my Smith & Wesson revolvers is to first remove the grip panels. Corrosion can start to set in under the grip panels, more so on blued pistols, but even stainless steel can corrode over time. Moisture can squeeze in between the grip and frame over time. Secondly I will remove the cylinder yoke screw and take off the entire cylinder and yoke for cleaning. Being especially careful not to dame the screw. Using either a cable style cleaning kit from Otis or a straight rod, I will use a bit of bore solvent, then follow up with patches and oil. On a blued revolver, oil is your friend. It keeps corrosion at bay, especially while your prized revolver is in storage. Periodically I will remove the side cover of the revolver, but do so carefully. Remove the necessary screws, then tap on the opposite side with something solid, but not something that will hurt or damage the finish. The side plates fit tight and will pop off eventually.

So in closing, make sure you don’t neglect those wheel guns. They may be considered more reliable than an autoloader, but can still fail from neglect.
