It happened in a blur.
You and Dokyeom were the first ones out the back door of the studio, schedules done for the day. The sun already dipping below the horizon.
It was supposed to be a quiet exit - the company arranging for a side route away from the public eye, knowing a few fans might linger. But none of them expected this.
The moment you stepped into the alley, the chill hit first - and so did the movement. A figure, darting out from behind a corner, phone already aimed with the flash on.
You had clocked her the moment you exited - the girl in the hoodie, standing too close to the barricades, not shouting like the others; instead, watching. Eyes sharp. Unblinking. Looking for something.
Not a fan.
The air turned cold with recognition - a s*saeng.
The manager had the door to the van open fast. “Go, go, go!”
But she moved faster; yelling Dokyeom’s name. Pushing past security. Blinding lights. Shoving. Screaming. And the moment you saw her lunge directly towards the both of you, phone raised like a weapon - you didn’t think. Moving out of pure instinct.
“Dokyeom, get in! ”
Your voice cracked sharply through the chaos, nudging Dokyeom into the van before the ‘fan’ could reach him. He barely had time to duck before you climbed in right after, attempting to pull the door shut.
Blood rushed in your ears when a screech rang out.
A loud beep from the autodoor as an arm inserted itself between the sliding door, clamping between the closing gap.
Her grasp on the phone loosened, dropping onto the floor with recording mode still running.
Your heart stopped.
Her eyes were wild, half-manic, hand still flailing around in the narrow gap. “Dokyeom! Dokyeom oppa! Just one photo– let me in–!”
“Get off!” The manager barked from outside, trying to pull her away, but she wouldn’t budge.
Dokyeom had backed up into the seat, eyes wide with panic.
You didn’t hesitate - moving more out of instinct than logic.
Throwing the van door back open, the force from your action was hard enough to make the s*saeng and your manager stumble slightly back.
Dokyeom called your name from behind, hand reaching out in an attempt to stop you as you stepped out. But it was too late.
A gust of wind whipped against your face, with adrenaline roaring as you pushed her away from the vehicle with force.
“Are you fucking insane?!” You hissed at the s*saeng, grabbing her wrist, hard enough to bruise when she tried to lunge again. In the midst of that, you turned back to grab the phone that was still left on the floor lf the van, swiftly tossing it on the asphalt.
The screen cracked into pieces.
“Don’t you dare touch him!”
The s*saeng screamed back, yanking her arm away to try swinging her hands back at you.
A nail caught your cheek - sharp sting blooming when you stumbled back with a hand flying to your cheek.
Blood. It was bleeding.
Not badly - but enough for it to be obvious.
Still, you didn’t back down; standing between her and the open door with your whole body. Your chest heaved, fury clouding your vision.
“Back. The. Fuck. Up,” you growled, voice trembling, “before I make you regret this.”
The rest of the members were rushing now, staff catching up. Minghao got to you first, grabbing your arm and trying to pull you back, eyes wide as he saw the s*saeng still in a grappling match with you.
“Stop–!”
Security finally arrived after what felt like an eternity, pinning and dragging the girl away as she kicked and shouted incomprehensibly. Another pushed forward to usher you and the onlooking members away from the crowd forming behind the barricades.
.
When the chaos faded behind, you finally let your legs give out; climbing back into the black van. Your breathing came in short, sharp, bursts - shock still thrumming in your veins. The tension in the air was palpable as Seungkwan looked at you stunned. Joshua just stared with his jaw loose. Dokyeom– he was frozen.
“Yah!” A shriek cut through the air.
Jeonghan was beside you in an instant. “God– what were you thinking? Are you okay? You’re bleeding–!”
“I saw her go for Dokyeom,” you said hoarsely. “I wasn’t gonna let her hurt him.”
Seungcheol was positioned half-in half-out the van, kneeling beside you, gently inspecting your cheek. His hands were shaking. “You took a hit. You took a hit for him.”
Dokyeom’s hand trembled slightly as he reached for your wrist.
“You didn’t have to–” His voice cracked. “You didn’t have to go out there. What if– what if she had a weapon or–”
You finally looked at him, and your heart shattered a little. His eyes were red, not from crying yet, but from holding it in too long.
“I wanted to,” you whispered. “I did it because she scared you.”
Seungcheol was visibly tense, jaw clenched from the absurdity of the situation.
Even when the manager came to bring him back to his own van, his eyes never left you until you were out of sight.
The weight of your choice settled in the air like thick fog after the van’s engine roared to life, wheels moving to rush you back for first-aid in the dorm.
Jeonghan held your hand tightly, trying not to let his own tremble. “Don’t ever do that again,” he whispered, voice breaking. “Don’t ever put yourself in danger like that.”
You gave a tired smile, eyes beginning to sting.
“I can’t promise that,” you mumbled. “Not if it means protecting any of you.”
