Gaara pants like his lungs are falling out of his chest. It's mostly adrenaline, a side of physical effort, hold the panic. He is too well-trained for panic. The thing - that thing - lies lifeless or near-lifeless some meters away, the dark-soaked patch around it blooming outward, matting the grass, tinging the air metallic on the tongue.
He refocuses on the girl slumped against the bench. The one still moving, against all odds. The fight is over, but he is a rampaging bull force-fed a sedative, he is a rollercoaster halfway down the slope and someone has hit the emergency brake. For one terrible moment her life, too, hangs in the balance; he is not too well-trained to make mistakes.
This moment passes in the sound of his slowing breaths and the dull hum of traffic. Then it is her he approaches with unsteady knees, eyes all whites. To say he towers above her would be something of an exaggeration, but the nudge of his shoe against her hip is none too gentle.

❝ 星になってね、スニョン君。
( become a star, soonyoung-kun—. )
rkship: minatozaki sana x kwon soonyoung (@rkhoshi)
they're not in the same class, but sana comes to find out that that's not the reason why she hardly ever sees soonyoung at school.
it's weird because she swears the person she walks with to school in the morning is definitely soonyoung, but whenever lunchtime comes around and she peeks inside the window of the classroom next door, it's like her mind is playing games with her... like she never walked with him because he's not there.
"ne, where were you at lunchtime?" she asks during dinner, glancing up from her food with a smile as soonyoung does with a blink. there's a noticeable pause, like he has to think about it, and she awkwardly looks over at his parents that seem to be waiting for an answer, too. noticing a speechless soonyoung, she quickly adds, "ah-- i was looking for you! because i thought we could have lunch together, ne?"
"bathroom!" he finally exclaims, his eyes arching with his smile. "sorry you missed me! lunchtime is bathroom time for me, you know? i drink a lot of water, ha! --haha!"
at first, his reason seems plausible-- she goes to the restroom during lunchtime, too-- but when she realizes his disappearance is a constant thing and he isn't there during breaks between periods either, she senses that there's something else at play.
"ne, let's eat lunch together tomorrow?" she finally suggests with a smile on their way home one afternoon, hands locked behind her back as she merrily puts skips in her steps. what really raises her suspicion is when the usual "yes man" soonyoung lightly fiddles with the straps on his backpack, even more so when his eyes become shifty as he thinks.
"ummm..." he drawls. "we can," he says, and sana knows something's definitely up because his answer isn't a "yes" or a "sure".
what really puts the icing on the cake is when he walks her home one day before turning on his heels to head for hagwon as usual; he walks in the opposite direction of what she usually sees. that's not the way to hagwon, is it? she knows she shouldn't, but she waits for him to turn at the corner before following behind him, eager to know just what he's up to.
what sana sees that day isn't a mere reason why soonyoung's constantly absent; it's much more than that. much bigger. she stands there watching him for hours and hours in secret, witnessing his shirt become victim to his sweat and hard work as he smiles and laughs and practically glows while dancing with fellow passionate dreamers. what sana sees that day sparks millions of different things within her that were once forgotten, and the feeling is beyond overwhelming.
"why weren't you at hagwon today?" at the sound of soonyoung's father's voice, sana freezes in her spot at the top of the stairs and carefully peers over to find another speechless soonyoung. "your teacher said you weren't there."
"i, uh--"
"well?" his mother chimes in, and sana's body moves before her mind does.
"he was with me!" she chirps, sleeved hands finding the stair railing as the kwon family of three turn their heads to look up at her. her smile is sweet as always, not once faltering at the look of confusion on soonyoung's face as she continues. "we were at the library to study; i asked him for help." she tries her best with her broken korean, making her way all the way down to the end of the stairs as soonyoung's parents exchange glances with one another.
"well, sana certainly wouldn't lie..."
she just did, but she plays it off with another smile before bowing her head respectfully when the two adults make their way upstairs after a mutter of good nights. soonyoung watches his parents' backs grow further and further away before turning to look at sana when they're finally gone.
"why did you do that?" he whispers, frowning. "what if you get into trouble because of me--"
"soonyon-kun!" she takes his hands, bringing them up to shake them gently as her eyes light up with excitement. "i saw you! i saw it-- your dance!"
soonyoung blanches visibly, as if he's seen or heard something absolutely terrible, and at the sight, sana's hold around his hands grows a bit tighter.
"i won't tell ajussi or ajumma, don't worry." her gaze searches for a look of relief on soonyoung's face, her insides dying to tell him so many different things that would probably just end up coming out as word vomit if she's not careful. "you're amazing; is that what you have been doing during schooltime? is that what you want to do? your dream?"
"i-- i want to, but--"
she's asking him too many things at once that he's having a difficult time keeping up, she knows, and before he's able to properly answer anything, she speaks up again.
"become a star, soonyoung-kun!"
soonyoung blinks. "... eh?"
"follow your dreams; i will be cheering you on always!

When Shindou first brought the goban home, Touya knew that it was different. No, actually, he knew before that. A week ago, Shindou had whispered into Touya’s ear just before he nod off to sleep how his grandmother thought he should have his grandfather’s goban now. Shindou’s grandfather had passed away a month back.
Touya still remembered the heavy silence that followed.
He gave the goban a weary look. May was here, dripping green and warmth over the front porch; spring spilling into the garden. But as Touya opened the door so that Shindou could carry the goban in, he felt a chill ghosting over his skin.
Shindou wiped down the goban every day with care. But he refused to use it. Some nights, Touya caught him sitting by it, both black and white bowls opened by his side.
Touya thought of his late father, who cast away his pro career in Japan to travel the world, only to still be anchored by a goban with an invisible opponent who couldn’t still be in this world. Touya thought of the loneliness that settled deeper and deeper into his father over time even though so many pros were clamoring for a chance to play a game against him. He knew, with an unnatural certainty, that this goban was placed in the same exact position that his father’s old goban was before it was moved.
Shindou was startled when Touya sat across from him, blinking owlishly in confusion when Touya took one of the goke.
“Nigiri?”
Shindou straightened. The strange melancholy slowly evaporated from his frame. It was the first time Touya felt the full intensity of Shindou’s attention this week since the goban came into their home. He didn’t realized how much he missed it.
Shindou seemed hesitant at first, but as he reached for the white stones in his goke, Touya could see the life being breathed back into his body. Touya’s chest felt light at the sight.
I am here, Touya thought. Hikaru, I am here.
As if he could hear Touya’s thoughts, Shindou glanced up at him with a shy smile.
