Merce Cunningham with dancers at Westbeth, 1971 (James Klosty)
8.23.22 Lunchtime drawing: “Vote Here.” I voted in the Democratic primary today, and is my tradition, here’s a sketch of my polling place, Westbeth Artist Housing.
Westbeth
A New Chapter for Reuben Hernandez Studios
I'm so excited and honored to be a resident of Westbeth Artists Housing! It feels like I've come full circle because I lived in the West Village when I first moved to NYC 11 years ago, and my last studio in Brooklyn was also coincidentally on West Street. Westbeth has a rich history, formally the Bell Labs building, and residents have included Diane Arbus, Vin Diesel, Robert De Niro Sr., and Bob Gruen (John Lennon's photographer). Keith Haring had his first solo show at Westbeth in 1981. Westbeth is also home to the Martha Graham Dance Company, the oldest continually performing dance company in the world and The New School for Drama. In other news I finally got a farm table! Time to make something...

2.29.20 Leap day drawing: It’s so cold out in this courtyard at Westbeth Artist Housing, how fast can I sketch?
6.19.19 Lunchtime Drawing: The Washington and Bethune Street corner of Westbeth Artists Housing. “The third and fourth stories of the building were partially removed in 1931-34 when the New York Central Railroad built the High Line which runs through the building. The large High Line openings are supported by horizontal concrete beams on the facade and diagonal braces within.” - from the National Register of Historic Places Report. . . . #NicksLunchboxService #westvillage #highline #westbeth #bethunestreet #washingtonstreet #westvillage #art #architecture #sketchbook #drawingaday (at Westbeth) https://www.instagram.com/p/By5w27xlYKR/?igshid=1x6jq8v8na3u3
