No. This PSA, created by the trans community completely misses the point of the Bathroom Bill in America and is part of spreading misinformation and #passingprivilege. The point this PSA misses, with all its good intentions, is that neither Buck Angel nor his trans woman friend in the picture will never be questioned when using a bathroom. The Bathroom Bill is not about them, and this is the issue that the trans community is not realising and making worse. Even with hormones, many trans people do not have passing privilege - they do not 'pass' or look cisgender. And: they shouldn't have to. The problem is that not all trans people do or want to pass as cisgender, and not all trans people are binary - male or female, so this PSA makes it much more difficult for those who do not look male or female, and it is these trans people who are specifically being targeted by the Bathroom Bill. Our trans siblings, brothers and sisters who do not pass and do not want to pass are the ones being arrested, raped, beaten and tortured, and are now the focus of this bathroom bill. The Bathroom Bill is, and never was, about bathroom use or the 'safety' of women using the bathroom with trans people. It's not just that #WeNeedToPee. The Bathroom Bill is, ultimately, a way for the gender-policing Republican Party to illegalise being transgender. They're trying to make it as difficult as possible to be transgender in public, and therefore in private, which is why visibly transgender people will be the target of this Bill, and not cis-looking people like Buck Angel. #BathroomBill

So tweeted Shamir, an up and coming new singer from Las Vegas. You might have heard his catchy little ditty in a recent Google commercial. The song is called On the Regular, and in it, Shamir smooth raps his way over a cowbell beat. And when he sings, it's high and not what you expect from a guy. Like a lot of singers, he plays with our sonic expectations to great effect -- like a Millennial Michael Jackson, Cassandra Wilson or Jimmy Scott. It works. The song sticks in your head, and the video is bright and bubbly.
Shamir is immensely talented. He's been making music since he was a little kid. And with that Google commercial and all the attention that's bringing, he will be around for quite a while. Plus, he's just so adorable and uncompromising. As the video shows, he's being himself, living that space between the masculine and the feminine. How can you not find him completely fun?
We're in an interesting time today where more and more people are able to be who they are without fear. On the one hand, a mother writes a book called My Princess Boy about her little boy who wears dresses and crowns; Jazz Jenning, transgender activist, is starring in her own mainstream show; Laverne Cox is winning acting awards; and even Bruce Jenner, a former Olympian, is planning on talking about her transition.
On the other hand, states are enacting laws to force everyone to use bathrooms according to the sex they were assigned at birth. But even that overreaction is prompting folks to protest and stop compromising. Have you seen Michael Hughes' selfies with the #wejustneedtopee hashtag?
So, I'm so happy Shamir exists! I hope he stays all his fabulous self. We'll get a chance to see more of him in May when he releases his new album, Ratchet.
