Wendat moccasins; 19th century; moose hair floral embroiderey with seed beaded edges.
abenaki flag #2 & the old flag (i actually didn't know that was an old flag lmfao) but maybe keep the new flag too as an option in case anyone wants it (i just prefer the original aesthetics wise)!!
[EDIT 2025-01-22 to clarify: ladyimaginarium, who is native, asked me for Abenaki, Mi'kmaq, Wolastoqey, and Wendat flags. These are the First Nations that ladyimaginarium is from. I did not create these flags unprompted, they were specifically requested. I sent ladyimaginarium multiple rounds of mockups and got feedback before posting them.]
I have some extremely belated flags for you! Intersex Abenaki, Mi'kmaq, Wolastoqey, and Wendat. Vibrant versions on left, sensory friendlier versions on right.
As a child, one of the schools I attended took us on a field trip to the old Jesuit settlement called Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons and The Martyrsâ Shrine (or Shrine of the Canadian Martyrs) in Midland, Ontario, Canada. I just find it really gross and racist that we were supposed to hold the Jesuit settlers and missionaries in high esteem when they were a part of an effort to colonize the indigenous people with one of the methods being converting them to Catholicism.
Perhaps those Jesuit martyrs genuinely believed that they were doing good and for that I pity their deaths but I sympathize with the Huron (the Wendat) a lot more. Perhaps the Jesuits believed they were doing good and were able to convert some people but they werenât invited and they werenât welcome. They were invaders and thatâs a fact that Catholics skirt around whenever a saint or martyr who had a hand in colonization comes up.Â
Barkskins & Chaske Spencer
Of all the great screen caps and GIFs out there for Barkskins why is it that I cannot find ANY of Chaske Spencer or the Wendat in general? It's annoying. I need some!

Weekly World Music:Â âThe Huron Carolâ - Heather Dale
The "Huron Carol" is a Christmas hymn written in 1643 by Jean de Brébeuf, a Christian missionary at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons in Canada. Brébeuf wrote the lyrics in the native language of the Huron/Wendat people; the song's original Huron title is "Jesous Ahatonhia" ("Jesus, he is born"). The song's melody is a traditional French folk song, "Une Jeune Pucelle" ("A Young Maid")
This version is performed by Canadian singer and songwriter Heather Dale. Her take on the song contains a single verse from both the French and Wendat versions, and dispenses with the traditional English lyrics in favor of a more recent translation better in keeping with the French and Wendat verses.Â
Huron lyrics:
Estennialon de tsonwe Jesous ahatonhia Onnawatewa dâoki nâonwandaskwaentak Ennonchien skwatrihotat nâonwandilonrachatha Jesous ahatonhia ahatonhia Jesous ahatonhia A,oki onkinnhache eronhiaâeronnon iontonk ontatiande ndio sen tsatonnharonnion Warie onnawakweton ndio sen tsatonnharonnion Jesous ahatonhia ahatonhia Jesous ahatonhia
French:
(Jesous ahatonhia)
English:
Let Christian men take heart today The devilâs rule is done; Let no man heed the devil more, For Jesus Christ has come But hear ye all what angels sing: How Mary Maid bore Jesus King. Jesous ahatonhia. Jesus is born. Jesous ahatonhia. Three chieftains saw before NoĂ«l A star as bright as day; âSo fair a sign,â the chieftains said, âShall lead us where it may.â For Jesu told the chieftains three: âThe star will bring you here to me.â Jesous ahatonhia. Jesus is born. Jesous ahatonhia.
A biracial person is not a watered down version of two cultures. They do not have to pick one or the other either. I know twice the culture. That's all.
