An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
In which Wednesday visits the lupin cages, Enid gets the love she deserves, and Agnes starts a friendship speedrun.
First Kiss
Wednesday woke with a sharp gasp, skin slick with cold sweat. The nightmare still clung to her, Tyler’s face, that cursed kiss, the monster beneath the man she was manipulated into liking... She had tried every mental exercise, every ritual of detachment, but her unconscious mind refused to purge him. That kiss…still haunted her. Her first kiss…tainted by a serial killer. The memory made her stomach turn unpleasantly.
She secretly wished she could want romance…just enough to overwrite the memory with something that didn’t make her skin crawl. But she wasn’t built that way. And it wasn’t as if anyone was lining up for the privilege anyway…
A soft rustle came from the other side of the room. “Wends?” Enid’s voice was thick with sleep. “You okay?”
Wednesday cleared her throat but said nothing, staring at the ceiling.
Enid sat up, ears twitching faintly. “Your heartbeat’s going crazy.” She padded over on bare feet and perched at the edge of Wednesday’s bed. “I am fine, Enid,” Wednesday said, tone clipped. “Go back to bed.”
Enid shook her head, stubborn even half-asleep. “Scoot.”
Wednesday hesitated only a second before shifting over. They had done this before on nights when nightmares won but they never spoke of it. Just…friends supporting each other.
Enid slipped under the covers and lay beside her. At first Wednesday stayed rigid as a corpse. Then, slowly, she exhaled and turned onto her side. Enid mirrored her, their faces inches apart in the dim moonlight.
“Hi,” Enid whispered, smiling softly. She reached out and tucked a stray strand of dark hair behind Wednesday’s ear, fingers lingering against her cheek.
Wednesday’s eyes fluttered shut at the touch. The nightmare’s grip loosened, replaced by the warmth radiating from Enid’s body. “You do not have to…”
“I want to,” Enid cut in gently. “You’re always there for me. Let me be here for you.”
Silence stretched, comfortable and heavy. Enid’s thumb brushed Wednesday’s jaw, tracing the tension there. Wednesday’s breath hitched. The vulnerability felt dangerous, worse than any monster but for once, she didn’t pull away.
“Talk to me. What was it this time?” Enid’s asked gently.
“Enid…” It came out quieter than intended.
Enid’s gaze dropped to Wednesday’s lips. “Just tell me what you need…”
Wednesday was quiet for a long moment. Then, in a low, reluctant voice: “Tyler. Again. The dream always ends the same…with that wrenched kiss. The one I cannot erase no matter how hard I try. I despise that my first was taken by that monster...” Her fingers tightened in the sheets. “I keep wondering if something is wrong with me…why I allowed it... I cannot seem to purge it from my mind.”
Enid’s expression softened with understanding. She shifted closer, wrapping her arms around Wednesday in a warm, secure hold. “There is nothing wrong with you, Wends. Not one thing. Tyler tricked you, he’s the monster, not you. You’re allowed to feel shaken by that. But it doesn’t define you.” She gently lifted Wednesday’s chin so their eyes met. “You’re so strong, and so incredibly kind even when you pretend not to be. You notice everything. You protect the people you care about with everything you have. You’re brilliant, and funny in the driest, most perfect way…and you’re beautiful. Inside and out. Anyone who gets to be close to you is the luckiest person alive. I know I am.” She smiled, eyes glistening with admiration.
The words sank deep in Wednesday’s soul. She stared at Enid, guard fully lowered, something raw and aching in her dark eyes. Enid’s gaze drifted slowly down to Wednesday’s lips once more, lingering there, making Wednesday’s breath hitch. “Enid..”
Enid leaned in first, hesitant, giving Wednesday every chance to pull away. Their lips met softly, warm and shy at the start. Then Wednesday made a quiet sound and kissed back with more urgency, fingers threading into Enid’s messy pink-and-blue hair, pulling her closer.
Enid melted into it, shifting on top with ease, knees bracketing Wednesday’s hips. The kiss deepened quickly, still tender but growing more passionate, tongues brushing, breaths mingling, hands exploring. Enid’s palm slipped under Wednesday’s shirt, stroking warm skin along her side. Wednesday arched subtly into the touch, one hand cupping Enid’s face as if memorizing her. She nipped at Enid’s lower lip before soothing it with her tongue. Their bodies pressed flush together, legs tangling, the nightmare burning away under the heat of something real and mutual.
They kissed like that for a long time, needy and intense, little pauses where they’d press foreheads together and breathe the same air, smiling softly. Wednesday’s hand moved up to play with a strand of Enid’s colorful hair. Enid nuzzled her nose against Wednesday’s cheek, “Better?” She whispered.
Wednesday’s eyes were dark, pupils blown and full of emotion. She hooked a leg around Enid’s waist and flipped them in one smooth motion, now hovering above her. “Much better,” she murmured, voice rough, before claiming Enid’s mouth again, hungrier this time, hands exploring with growing confidence as they sank deeper into the bed. “Stay…” She murmured against her lips.
“Always,” Enid promised, kissing her back with as much intensity. Her lips finally erasing every trace of the monster who had once dared to touch what was always hers…
Vision
Enid, still trapped in Wednesday’s body, slipped back into the dorm and noticed Wednesday wasn’t back from wherever she had gone, trying to get them back into their own bodies.
She sighed, the sound lower and sharper than her own, and walked toward their circular window. It had started raining heavily, and she hoped Wednesday wouldn’t take long.
She slid down the window, pulling out her phone and scrolling aimlessly through it. She went from recent messages from her pack mates asking to hang out, which were left unanswered, to her camera roll.
She stared at her most recent picture. It was of Wednesday’s face smiling back at her, dimples on full display. Enid traced the curve of that familiar mouth. She’d never see Wednesday smile like that in her own body. She smiled, glad she could at least keep this one for herself.
She kept looking through her pictures and saw one of herself; she had just finished fixing her hair, colors brightly reapplied, and the addition of bangs framed her face nicely.
A pang of nostalgia twisted in her chest as she saw her face, her own smile, blue eyes, and style. It was a strange feeling she couldn’t explain, but she trusted Wednesday and knew that she would get them out of this soon.
One more scroll landed her on a semi-selfie she had with Wednesday. More like Wednesday reading behind her as she took a selfie, but they were both in frame so that’s what counted. Her finger hovered over Wednesday’s face, and she sighed, “Just a little more…” she whispered like a plea. She closed her eyes as a silent tear rolled down her cheek…
She shook her head; there was no reason to be sad. They still had several hours before the curse took their… “I shouldn’t think that.” She said lowly, placing her finger over the picture to scroll, and it all went black; her head shot backwards, her eyes rolled to the back of her head as she dropped to the floor…
…
Wednesday stalked through Nevermore’s halls in Enid’s body, irritation radiating from every bouncy step she couldn’t suppress. Her mother had caught her snooping near Rotwood’s séance chamber. “If only I had my body…” She grumbled under her breath.
She approached a group of students blocking the corridor. Her glare, usually lethal, didn’t have the same effect in Enid’s body. “Move,” she barked, “or your worst nightmares come true right now.” She barked, making some students giggle while others started whispering among themselves… She huffed, shoving through the crowd of unbothered students, stepping on toes without remorse.
As she reached the top floor where their dorm was, her hackles rose, and her nose twitched, catching a familiar scent laced with distress. “Enid.” She broke into a run, slamming their door open. “Enid!” She rushed to Enid’s side, dropping to her knees where Enid was lying. Black tears streaked Wednesday’s pale cheeks. Enid stirred as Wednesday helped her sit up, knees drawn close, looking heartbreakingly small in the dark uniform.
“Wends…” Enid’s voice cracked. Fresh black tears spilled over.
“You had a vision…” Wednesday murmured, her hand instinctively reaching for her face. “What did you see?” She pushed her bangs out of her eyes in comfort.
Enid shook her head, “I couldn’t…I didn’t…they all…” She sobbed into her hands, trying to get a hold of her emotions but failing miserably.
Wednesday felt an unfamiliar warmth bloom in her chest at the sight of Enid’s raw vulnerability. She knew the razor edge of her visions all too well and wouldn’t wish them upon Enid…ever… “You are safe, Enid.” She pressed a hand on her knee, then shifted to rub slow circles on her back. “Try to focus. What did you see?”
Enid sobbed, pulling her hands away from her face, startled by the inky stains on her fingers. “We were in the school… Several Hydes attacking. So much blood. I…I couldn’t wolf out.” Her eyes squeezed shut. “I walked past the bodies… Ajax… Bianca… Eugene… I couldn’t save any of them.”
Wednesday pulled her closer, arms wrapping around Enid’s trembling frame. Enid buried her face in the crook of Wednesday’s neck, nuzzling instinctively for comfort. Wednesday’s nose twitched at her own scent filtered through Enid’s heightened senses. Something in the werewolf body responded without permission: a low, soothing rumble rose in her chest as calming pheromones filled the air.
Enid sniffled, and her breathing began to normalize. “Did you…did you just…”
“I believe so,” Wednesday said, faintly embarrassed. “Is it helping?”
Enid nodded, nuzzling closer. “Tots…”
Wednesday’s borrowed body ran extremely hot. Her werewolf anatomy, pulling every lever to protect and comfort…though she didn’t know why… She cleared her throat, trying to compose herself, “Was there more?” She questioned quietly.
Enid nodded against her shoulder, “Agnes came. She was freaking out, saying something about Tyler getting you…We ran…he buried you alive and…” Her voice cracked again, louder sobs returning.
Wednesday caressed the back of Enid’s head, releasing another wave of pheromones. Enid suddenly pulled away as if burned.
“I couldn’t get to you in time…I tried…we tried but…when we reached you…it was too late…” Fresh tears spilled from Enid’s eyes. It was a strange sight to witness, as Wednesday hadn’t seen herself cry since she was a child. “I…pulled your lifeless body out of that hole… There was nothing I could do…”
Wednesday frowned, trying to figure out what the vision could mean and how to prevent it. “It was just that, Enid. Nothing more.”
“I COULDN'T WOLF OUT! I COULDN'T SAVE YOU! EVERYONE DIED BECAUSE I'M WEAK!” Enid bolted upright. Wednesday rose with her, steady and calm. “Enid. I will not let that happen.” She opened her arms.
Enid stepped into the hug immediately, squeezing tight. “You can’t die…not on my watch. Promise me.”
Wednesday wrapped her arms around Enid just as fiercely. “I shall not die. Not if I can help it.”
Enid let out a wet chuckle. “Please tell me you have a plan…”
Wednesday held her a moment longer, thinking. Failure was not an option. “I do. I will not fail you, Enid Sinclair.”
“Good, ’cause I’m not losing you,” Enid whispered into Wednesday’s ear, breath warm and tickling.
Wednesday pulled back just enough to look her in the eyes, fingers gently brushing colorful bangs aside. “We will fix this tonight. Your vision will not come true. This I pledge to you.”
Enid smiled, bittersweet but steadier, “I sure hope so…God, how do you deal with those?!” She rubbed her temples, “That was intense…to say the least.”
Wednesday nodded, “They are…eventually, one gets used to them…but they never get easier…”
“I’ll never complain about my body… EVER!” Enid sighed, still wiping at the faint black stains on her cheeks. “Can we get ice cream or something, please?”
Wednesday rolled her eyes, the motion exaggerated in Enid’s expressive face. “One scoop. Then we return to Rosalind Rotwood’s grave. We have no choice if we wish to reverse this.”
She walked stiffly toward the door, Enid trailing close at her heels. The memory of the vision still weighed heavily between them, but the simple act of moving forward felt like defiance.
They ate their ice cream quickly under Nevermore’s night sky, shoulders brushing in the cool air. The sweetness was a small, fleeting comfort. As they made their way through the rain-soaked grounds toward the cemetery, Wednesday’s mind raced. Weems had warned her earlier; others who tried this ritual had paid with their lives. Sacrificing something deep and personal was the only way out. She would have to burn that bridge when it came…
Enid bumped her arm lightly. “Whatever happens…we face it together, right?”
Wednesday glanced sideways, her voice low and resolute. “Together. This curse ends tonight.”
'...And if I did? You deserved it'
I posted the thirteenth chapter of my ao3 fic a few days ago. Full work and tags can be found HERE Feedback always welcome. Premise: A season one-ish reimagining with the characters in college Summary: Enid Sinclair finally got a roommate in her second year of college. Introducing her to modern college life seemed like a good idea at the time. At least until Enid teaches her how to read the news on her phone. That’s when the murders start. Total word count so far: 54,553 Rating: Mature Warnings: Graphic Depictions of Violence Some of my favorite excerpts from the chapters: From chapter 2: "They’ve got this weird psychic thing where they finish each otherr’sss…” Enid drew the last word out, letting a smile grow on her face as she winked at Wednesday. Wednesday raised an eyebrow. Enid raised an eyebrow. Wednesday raised her eyebrow higher. Enid’s face hurt. They stood still for a few moments, stuck at an impasse, before Wednesday muttered, “…sentences?” Enid giggled, dancing happily on her feet. “Yeah!"
From chapter 5: A carrot was placed on the cutting board. In a blur of movement, Wednesday brought the knife up and down; reducing it to a row of perfectly even slices. Enid gawked in awe. “Can I try?” Wednesday wordlessly handed over the knife. Enid gently brought it down. The tip of the carrot shot off the chopping board and into the flames. “Maybe not.” She poked the carrot chunk with the end of some tongs until it was no longer on fire. Wednesday reached for the next carrot. Enid turned back to the sausages. Wait. She dived for the trash can, searching for the cooking instructions. Her fingers brushed against the plastic and she yanked it free. Cook for 20 mins. Noted. She tossed it back in the trash.
From chapter 11: Enid ran through the dorm, pushing open the window with only a slight hiss. Wednesday casually paced after her. A raven laid against the floor, its wings spread across the stone so wide she could count every individual feather. It wore a strange little backpack made of twine. Enid glanced up at Wednesday. “Don’t be offended.” She pointed at the unconscious raven. “Is this yours?”
From chapter 13: The door to the establishment slammed open. Enid ran through, panting heavily. “She didn’t do it.” The sheriff looked at her strangely. “I did it.” Wednesday raised an eyebrow. “Uh I mean…” Enid reached into the jacket pockets and slammed green bills onto the table. “No one did it.”

Graves
“So, remind me why we’re here again?” Enid asked nervously.
“Grandmama has finalized setting up my grave and…” Wednesday pulled Enid’s hand, guiding her through the family cemetery, which was bigger than Enid had imagined. “I had her make some…last-minute changes.”
“Changes?”
“Correct.” Wednesday turned and held both of Enid’s hands. “Since the recent development of our…relationship, I have had to make some modifications and I would like for you to see them.”
Enid smiled at Wednesday’s acknowledgment. “You’re so romantic, you know that?”
Wednesday kissed the back of her hand. “Only for you.” She continued to lead the way.
They made a stop at the base of two freshly dug graves…
“Wends…” Enid gasped as she noticed the hauntingly beautiful marble headstones.
“Lay with me.” Wednesday offered, pointing to the graves.
Enid blinked. “You want to lay…in there?”
“I had Grandmama move mine to accommodate yours and…” Wednesday said, poking her head up from her side. “There is a way to always feel your touch…for all eternity.”
Enid stepped into her side and laid down, noticing the arm-sized hole between both graves. “Is this…”
Wednesday stuck her hand through. “So we can hold hands as we perish into the soil from which we came.”
Enid snickered. “Of course you’d do the most utterly romantic thing ever.” She met Wednesday halfway, holding her hand and caressing it with her thumb.
“Would you do me the honor of laying with me forever?” Wednesday squeezed.
Enid’s smile deepened. “Forever and always.”

Chapter 8 Summary: The Stars Asked the Night
"Every time I try to talk to you about it you either have to leave, or get fake mad at me about something. Yeah, that's right I can tell it all in the eyes.”Â
Wednesday glares at her
“Yeah see! Exactly right there. You're faking it. You're not mad. I'm just getting too close to something you're not ready for"
