Great Criticism - Gucci. Wang Guangyi (王广义). Oil on canvas. 2005.

Wang Guangyi (王广义) is a new wave artist whose work responds to the radical political and social shifts in late 20th century China. Born into poverty, Wang spent his adolescence working in a rural village for three years during Cultural Revolution. Wang’s career initially started with painting propaganda posters in the early 1970s. When China’s art academies reopened in the 1980s, he applied to and attended the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. His later works fused imagery of Chinese propaganda with that of American consumerism and, building a foundation for 1990s Political Pop.

Gucci is a painting from his well-known Great Criticism series that superimposes iconic logos of over appropriated propaganda imagery from the Cultural Revolution. China’s communist past and capitalist present clashed as consumerism permeated into China along with advertising of new luxury commodoties. In response to this contention, Wang questions the state of Chinese national identity in between ideologies by rendering Mao-imagery in the style of American Pop Art.

Little Love Song (小情歌). by Sodagreen (蘇打綠). 2006.

Little Love Song, a track off their second album, Little Universe (小宇宙) is one of Sodagreen’s most popular songs. With the album’s release, Sodagreen was awarded Best Band and Best Melody (Little Love Song) at the 18th Golden Melody Awards. Little Love Song was also nominated for best lyrics and Little Universe was nominated for Best Album. Shortly after the release of their third album, Incomparable Beauty, the band made history for being the first indie band to hold a major concert at the Taipei Arena, and also holds the record of being the longest concert (five hours) ever held at the venue. They continued to win Best Band the following year at the 19th Golden Melody Awards.

Sodagreen (蘇打綠) is a Taiwanese indie band consisting of Greeny, Kay, A-Fu, Zephyr, Claire and Wei. The band formed in 2001 and broke into the Taiwanese indie music scene after receiving the Grand Jury Award in the 2004 Hohaiyan Gongliau Rock Festival. Sodagreen is best known for its main vocalist and songwriter Greeny (Wu Tsing-Fong), who rose to prominence with his distinct vocal style and range, unique performance and poetic lyrics. The band has since released ten albums and toured China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau and Australia before going on a three year hiatus announced in 2016.
