I'd like to introduce all of you fine people to the budding franchise known as Bird Call. Obviously, I did not create this; that honor goes to a, quite frankly, wonderful man by the name of Calvin Lester. This video gives you the basics on what you need to know. Am I the only one getting annoyed with videos on the web. Sure TicToc is fine, YouTube is a classic, they have their place, but there are times when I don’t want to, or can’t watch a video or a video is not as good.

Last week I spent half an hour on line looking for the manual for a piece of equipment. There were lots of videos of how to do X or Y, but I wanted a manual, with clear diagrams, a parts list, how too instructions. Somebody flipping through how to do something on a grainy shaky video, is not as clear as the manual.

Instagram is really pushing videos. I’ve seen a lot of posts from a lot of cartoonists who are really pissed about this. They have an established presence on Instagram, but if they don’t start posting videos, in addition to their cartoons, the algorithm will stop featuring their stuff, even for their followers.

A number of technical sites are heavily into pushing videos. No TheMacObserver, I don’t want to hear you guys chatting about the latest hardware. I want an article I can refer back to, skim for the bit I want to reference, a table of technical specifications. A written article does that, a video does not.

I can’t cite a video as a reference.

I can’t listen to a video at work.

Videos have their place on the web, but dammit, there are a lot of times I need a written article. If Im tearing down a system, I need a page that will stay put while I get this or that step done. I don’t need to watch it, do the step and then try to find my place again. A written article will have everything in it the author wanted, videos are often missing bits that the performer forgot to mention.
