Weather Report – Heavy Weather 

Heavy Weather is the eighth album by Weather Report, released in 1977 through Columbia Records. The release originally sold about 500,000 copies; it would prove to be the band’s most commercially successful album.

Reception

Heavy Weather received a 5-star review from Down Beat magazine and went on to be voted jazz album of the year by the readers of that publication.

AllMusic Review by Richard S. Ginell awarded the album 5 stars out of 5 and stating “Released just as the jazz-rock movement began to run out of steam, this landmark album proved that there was plenty of creative life left in the idiom.”

Weather Report – Sportin’ Life

Sportin' Life is the thirteenth studio album by the American jazz fusion band Weather Report, released in 1985 through Columbia Records. 

The album is named after a character from the George Gershwin opera Porgy and Bess. It marked a shift toward more electronic elements and vocal performances, though lyrics remained sparse in favor of chants and wordless vocals. Notably, it was the first Weather Report album to heavily utilize MIDI technology for composition and recording. While originally intended to be their final studio effort, the band released one more album, This Is This! (1986), to fulfill their contract with Columbia.

Today we went through the vegetable ballet! The challenge was to find a balance between a well choreographed ballet and being clowns. We ended up deciding to try to do the choreography to the best of our abilities and added a couple moments of confusion. We came to the realization that even though our clowns might find it hard to place a bench, but they are particularly good at dancing. Actually, if they can, they will dance, they actively suppress the dancing for most of the show!

Then, we went over the second weather report scene, which Eleanor had already (geniusly) pre-written before the rehearsal. The challenge here was to cut down the gags; we loved them all, but it was too much! We chose our favourites and made sure they all had their moment of focus.
