Exactly 50 years ago, these four crews of young men and their instructors set out on a month-long wilderness course out of the Table Rock Base Camp. This was to become the first-ever North Carolina Outward Bound School course. A big shout out goes to these guys for their bravery and perseverance as they blazed the way for future generations. While our courses have adapted with the times, many of the outcomes remain the same. As does our mission to change lives through challenge and discovery and to show people there is more in them than they know.

Did you know that many of the early NC Outward Bound instructors were responsible for establishing the moderate routes in the Linville Gorge for its students? Learn more by visitingwww.ncobs.org/50 "The military had already established the Cave Route and installed the steel eyebolts at the Chimneys and the Special Forces were training in the Linville Gorge in preparation for the Vietnam War, but the NCOBS pioneers were responsible for a majority of the routes in the area. Many moderate routes were established for students use such as: Jim Dandy, Skip-to-My-Lou, and the Block Route. NCOBS staff also put up Second Stanza, No Workman's Comp, the Camel, Sitting Bear and Cracker Jack in the same era." -Staff Member
