Aaaarrgggghhhhh!!!! I hate Jenny Han! I hate how her characters always chose the guy whom I thought was wrong for the girl.Yes, they technically ended up with their “first loves” which makes it all the more unrealistic for me. Maybe I’m just jaded and all or perhaps I’m too naive, but I hate it when first loves happens at a young age and they go breaking each others’ hearts then end up back together.
I mean, why would you have to put your characters through so much pain only to give them the happy ending with the one who hurt them in the end? I just think that’s very sadistic of her.
I get it that readers always want a happy ending but for me, love isn’t about finding the one person and enduring all the hurts and pains that person causes just so you get him in the end. Not all love stories need to start and end with your first love. Sometimes, it is okay, too, to find another love and learn that someone else could love you more than your first love.
Of course I am a hypocrite because I adored how Ron and Hermione’s relationship eventually came to be. And though I’ve always believed that they were meant to be together, they too did go through some rough times before they finally got their happily ever after.
I guess what really bothered me about Jenny Han’s love stories was the fact that her second leads were also very lovable that you can’t help but root for them as well. I can’t help but fall in love with her second leads because they have amazing personalities which makes it even more heartbreaking when the female lead doesn’t choose them.
But then, this just makes her a successful writer because she makes the reader feel the “torment” that her protagonists go through, seeing that it is really quite difficult to choose between someone you’ve always hoped to have and someone who wishes to love you.
