A Petition to the President of the U.S.
The next day, upon hearing the results of Trinity, Manhattan Project researcher – Leo Szilard – drafted a petition to President Truman
Leo Szilard presented every nuclear physicist working on atomic weapons development within the Manhattan Project – at Metallurgy Lab in Chicago and Oak Ridge Laboratory in Tennessee – a chance to sign the petition addressed to U.S. President Harry S. Truman.
It was signed by 70 scientists at the project's other laboratories, but not allowed to circulate at the project's primary facility, Los Alamos Scientific Laboratories, by J. Robert Oppenheimer. The coward told Edward Teller, "We as scientists have no business to meddle in political pressure of that kind. We know too little about that." *Rat!
The petition copy that was intended for President Truman was given by Szilard to the director of MetLab - Arthur Compton. Next, as a head of the National Academy of Sciences, Compton knew Lieutenant Colonel Kenneth Nichols - the District Engineer of the Manhattan Engineer District. Being appointed director of the MED, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' New York office for their earliest atomic weapons studies, Lieutenant Colonel Nichols was able to pass the petition to General Groves. The U.S. Army Three Star Gen Leslie Groves then gave Szilard's open letter to the leader of the Military Industrial Complex, Secretary of War, Henry L. Stimson. As President Truman was in Europe, the beast soon classified it Secret.
Despite Leo Szilard's wish to publicize the petition himself, the Secret document was not declassified until September of 1958.

I've talked before about postmortems of the 2024 elections and what Democrats need to do to pull their heads out of their asses. But one thing I forgot to mention and its arguably the most important is that they need to get rid of the neocons and war hawks within their own party.
Ever since Trump was elected in 2016 the Democrats began to suffer from TDS and joined with the neocons to beat Trump. (Which is funny given Trump isn't much of a dove despite what the media says about him.) To the point the Democrats became more hawkish in foreign policy and allowed former government war hawks onto places like CNN and MSNBC to be uncritically heard. They just swallowed all the bullshit the war hawks were spewing. They never bothered to push back on them at all. They also vote in favor of more war and hawkish foreign policy. And often the people who praised these war hawks were often the very same people who were critical of George W. Bush during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. So, it's incredibly hypocritical. And their endorsement of these horrible policies has made the world a worse place with war and violence.
This has done damage to their party as a lot of postmortem polls revealed that many Americans were motivated by foreign policy for this election which is rare since Americans usually aren't. So not just for the sake of their base but for the sake of the world they should ditch the neocons and war hawks. We need doves now more than ever.
