Metallica / Godsmack (11/16/2004; Toyota Center, Houston, TX)

The first proper concert I ever attended. This really set the stage for everything for me. I was 13 years old and I had desperately wanted to go see Van Halen, but my parents wouldn’t pay for it. They told me to pick something else instead. I had a choice of some good shows, but I picked Metallica, and nothing has ever been the same since. Metallica is such a great live show. I mean, even now, every time I’ve seen them has been amazing, no matter how old I or they get, no matter what other stuff I listen to. It’s goddamn Metallica. They’ll always be one of my favorite bands and it all started here. Doubt if I knew anything other than their radio hits at this point, but I learned real quick afterwards. Even aside from this being my first show, one cool point of pride is that I got to see them play “I Disappear,” a pretty rare song in their setlists. And I guess “Dirty Window,” since this was the last tour they really played anything from St. Anger. With good reason.

Godsmack opened. Not gonna lie, they were badass, to the 13 year old me. I still love nu metal to this day cause I grew up on it, and I just thought Sully Erna playing the bongos and singing during “Voodoo” was the coolest thing. I was an idiot. But they rocked. Good live band, regardless of opinion on their music.

Say Anything / Eisley (11/16/2009; Warehouse Live, Houston, TX)

Sunny Day Real Estate (10/06/2009; Warehouse Live, Houston, TX)

This was a big one for me. These guys are one of the all-time classic emo bands, and being a little emo kid, I was so excited to see them. To my knowledge, they haven’t done a reunion tour since this one fell apart, so this was probably my only opportunity to see them, and I am so glad I did. They were one of those early, influential bands for me and for many of the bands I grew up listening to. I will absolutely admit that the show was somewhat disappointing. The energy was lacking and you could tell the guys were just... old. They clearly weren’t the band of 1994. But they were still them and it was a pleasure to get the chance to see them rock through their classics.

Neon Indian / Miniature Tigers / Prefuse 73 (10/06/2010; The Engine Room, Houston, TX)

The Engine Room was the same place as the Warsaw, previously mentioned when I saw Upon a Burning Body and Oceano there in the sweltering heat. This time it was back to its old name and different ownership and it was massively improved. This was a weird show for me because I wasn’t used to seeing electronic bands really. I enjoyed Prefuse 73 but Miniature Tigers were absolutely awful. Either way, this wasn’t really my vibe. But Neon Indian is such a great performer and artist. He at least had live instrumentation and the way he danced and sang was just awesome. The guy writes some of the best melodies in the business these days. He reminds me of Jamiroquai in a way. I just love what he does and I danced my ass off. Great show.

Veil of Maya / After the Burial / Misery Signals / Within the Ruins (10/06/2011; Warehouse Live, Houston, TX)

This was another huge show for me because it was the first time I braved getting into the pit. We opened with Within the Ruins, who do little for me, but then it was on into Misery Signals. This was the only time I saw Mis Sigs with Karl Schubach singing, and it was fantastic. These guys are just so fucking underrated. They are really a great band, and when they’re on, they’re on.
