Do you have any hot takes on the Riordanverse? :0
First of all, thanks for the ask as always <3
Second... well, it depends on what you mean by hot take.
Hot take as in controversial ideas about the Riordanverse? To be honest, there's not many that I have. I know some fans will fixate for HOURS on 'they're out of character' or 'I didn't like the writing', etc., and that's totally okay, but honestly? There's enough feedback to authors on the Internet that I'm perfectly fine just enjoying their work instead of thinking too hard about it.
Ooooh. (TW for mention of abuse/war ahead.)
One of my favorites is about the Olympians and other gods. A lot of people talk about how the Greek gods are represented incorrectly – like Ares is abusive instead of protective of his daughters, and Aphrodite's Areia form (her war goddess aspect) is completely ignored.
But the concept behind the gods existing in the Riordanverse is that they have been sustained by human thoughts.
And so, their personalities have changed with the way that humanity perceives them.
Ares is abusive and a jerk now because war is no longer considered a matter of honor, the way it used to be. Now, war is a brutal word used to describe the atrocities of greed, hunger for power, jealousy and evil. In the past? It was a source of kleos (a new Greek word we learned from the show 👀.) It caused death, yes, but it was also a way to prove oneself. It was an art, an opportunity, a golden prize for the bravest of warriors. It was respected. But the world of Greek myths is no longer secluded to Greece. It has spread to the United States, to the U. K., to the rest of the world, where it has grown more convoluted and chaotic as the world and its morals reveal their darker sides. So yes, Ares is abusive. Because his muse has dwindled over time – it's been reduced to an ugly term for anger and hate, and he was reduced along with it.
The same goes for Aphrodite. Love is no longer the object of war – Greece and Troy fought over Helen, but that time is long gone. Now we fight over money. Over food. Over resources and religion and land. And, of course, that was always part of it, even in the old Greek myths, but in Greece, it was common to fight over love.
Except you couldn't really call it love.
It's always been unsure whether Paris and Menelaus actually cared for Helen, or if she cared for either of them. Nobody really bothered to ask the girl in question, back in (very) sexist Ancient Greece. In my eyes, Aphrodite represents love in all forms, but now, hundreds of years after Troy, love is not the matter of war or a bargaining term – it's an actual emotion. Something that is considered docile and golden, rather than a weapon. So she's grown to embody that, rather than embodying the more warlike aspect of it. But there are still the parts of her that remain cruel – her blindness to bloodshed is caused by her willingness to gloss it over for the sake of trivial love, because that is also a stereotype that's increased over the years. Love isn't just loving a partner – it can also be loving a friend or family member, but that definition been long forgotten because of the media. And Aphrodite has grown colder to fit that – she's beautiful, no doubt, but she's not involved in the fight.
Okay, thanks for enduring my rant 😌
Other hot takes/theories of mine:
Y'know how Luke retook control of his body in The Last Olympian, after Annabeth said "You promised"? That was partially because of her words... and partially because of Jason destroying the Black Throne on Mt. Tam (I will stand by this now and forever)
Poseidon is not. A. Good. Father. Nobody can convince me otherwise.
Jason's death was depressing but actually good for his character arc. I've seen a lot of people say that he had a really good arc set up that was ruined by Caligula's spear, but I think it was actually a much-needed shock for us readers, and a poetic development for him. Though it'll always make me cry
The same way: Reyna joining the Hunters was a good choice. I think that it would give her time to learn about herself and spend time away from a leadership position, which was obviously not good for her mental health. It would be nice to see the Hunters caring for her and being sisterly.
Thanks for the ask, Finley! Have a good day 💙
