btw it’s -15 degrees celsius outside and it’s the second day of not having any heating in my apartment — because of the bombings
my partner’s close friend, a queer anarchist, was killed in action (i.e. murdered by russians) on january first
new year’s day
the last thing they wrote to their friends was «i’m just glad my people and i are alive, it’s the best new year's present i could wish for»
5 hours later, they were struck by a russian drone while coming back from the assignment — killed immediately
my partner is out there in the east, serving in the military as well
wasn’t even able to go to the funeral
kyiv, a city of 3 million people, is plunged into darkness and cold
our other friend is currently on the assignment, in the trenches
we’re all scared we’re going to lose him too
i’m so tired

War Diary of a Reddit User’s Grandpa
Monday 26-11-1917 - “Dead Mule Gully”
‘The weather has been full & misty all day again. Some of the men have been on ammunition carrying fatigue during the day but I have had nothing to do.
Tonight Fritz bombarded our possies but no one was hurt.
One 4.2 shell landed on the Officer’s pill box but no damage was done.
I have not been feeling well today, my tonsils have been troubling me again.’
War Diary
With this in mind, it comes to no surprise that Korean game studios decided to use the Imjin War as a template for several real- time strategy games. The first of these games is War Diary (충무공전: 난중일기편), named after the war diary of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the Japanese commander who spearheaded the invasions. The game was developed by Trigger Soft Corporation in cooperation with HQ Team, an independent game studio. War Diary would later receive a sequel titled War Diary II: War Hero’s Story (충무공전 II : 난세 영웅전), this time developed by Trigger Soft alone. HQ Team released their own title based on this conflict, Seven Years War. Seven Years War in turn got its own sequel titled “Seven Years War 2” (임진록 2), a standalone expansion for said sequel as well as a planned third full entry in the series that was never released.

Residency Progress Report / 20th February 2017
I’m lucky to have spent some concentrated time delving into the archives (photographic + object based) at the Highlanders’ Museum at Fort George, Inverness, over the past 6 weeks. It’s provided a fascinating, funny, and at times, incredibly poignant window onto the everyday lives of families, soldiers and regiments during World War One.
Naturally there are War Diaries, which detail strategic manoeuvres and life-saving co-ordinates, but there are also highly personal notes like the one sent from son to father which signs-off ‘Your dying son’ or the postcard which reads ‘God bless my DEAR DADDY at the WAR and keep him safe’
Out of this densely woven web of narratives I’m beginning to navigate some ‘pathways for expression’ which will lead to an exhibition on-site from October 2017 - March 2018.
Image: The photographs above show my working space at the museum. It’s an ‘open-studio’ of sorts where I can communicate with people visiting the site, explore ideas and get a feel for the over-arching narratives that are emerging out of my residency.
at this point i’m just desperate, i’m a mess, i’m having constant nightmares about being tortured by russian soldiers, about my partner being killed in action, about my city being occupied and my family sent to a concentration camp
i don’t even have any anger left, i just want to grab people by their arms and cry and yell something along the lines of “don’t you see we are dying over here don’t you get that they are not going to stop”
i want to live
i really do i want to live and i want my loved ones to live and i want to have a kid someday and i want to wake up and look into my partner’s eyes without having to imagine myself at his grave
and he has such kind eyes and my heart breaks every time i imagine them dead
i can’t take it anymore
please don’t let us die over here
the wildest thing about this war is that i have to justify my right to live with long and exhausting pieces of historical and cultural analysis of my country's origins. "oh yeah, you don't want to be tortured and r*ped by the russian soldiers? well prove it to me in a 3k words essay". what the fuck
