Seastreak, Wall Street, Brooklyn Bridge
Constant Reminder of the Watchful Eye of the People
I was thinking on the common critiques people have had for this movement. One of the most popular being that occupiers have no idea what they want, no cohesive set of demands, and no "wildly important idea". But they do, don't they? At the root of it, people are upset because they no longer feel their government serves their interest and welfare. They feel they have no voice in the governing process. Bipartisan politics fail to serve a society that is far from black and white.
So they are occupying, getting their voices heard. They've succeeded, haven't they? A number of different causes and grievances of an entire segment of the population that has not had a forum to voice their interests or needs. Now they are. And we are listening and many of us are realizing...they have a point. They remind us that we, too, have a voice. It has sparked discussion and debate, engaging the people.
And symbolically, by occupying Wall Street and beyond, people make two very important points.
1. Hey, look government, right over here. Maybe you will see us when we are camped up your asshole, i.e. stationed right beside those you currently best serve. See us, we're here, too. We're occupying this nation as well. We're called humans. The People.
2. Hey, Wall Street. Here's looking at you. Still looking. Tomorrow, still looking. Peaceful now, but angry, simmering, watching. Still watching. Day after day, more streets and cities and countries are occupied. All of them watching. If you were a an amoral, corrupted corporation who had committed countless frauds against the People without ever facing any accountability, you might think you are safe to continue bilking millions of people. If those people suddenly turn their heads and start camping on your lawn and sniffing in your dirty laundry, you might think twice the next time you feel like defrauding a nation or enslaving the world. The occupation serves as a constant reminder that one false step, one fuck up, and millions of on the fence people whose minds have been mulling over and debating the legitimacy of this movement just might join forces and just might repair this broken system and take out the trash.
