“Stop looking at me like that.”
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Benny,” He laughs. Despite himself, Benjamin laughs along with him. That was just something about Oliver. No matter how hard he tried, Benjamin could never resist the way he made him feel.
Happy. Safe, even. Like he always going to be there for Benjamin, even if the million fears racing through Benjamin’s mind constantly yelled at him otherwise.
They’re walking down the street, headed towards Quinn’s house- or, cult house. Ex-cult house? It doesn’t matter. They’re going to meet up with Quinn and Jasper, and were talking on the way there.
Oliver was in the middle of talking about something. Something Benjamin was barely hanging onto, maybe something about Lumbersweats.
Benjamin was distracted. He had noticed how expressive Oliver was halfway through his ramble, and now all he can do is watch Oliver.
He tries to listen to what Oliver says, but his focus slips. Oliver speaks with his hands, when he isn’t fidgeting with them. Waves them around wildly to emphasize his points and express his energy. He smiled a lot, too. Especially when he’s excited like this. The smile is wide and unhidden and warm. Sometimes he’ll say a burst of words so fast it doesn’t make sense, and have to go back and reiterate each one.
It’s getting late into the day, and sometimes wind will blow past them, ruffling through Benny’s hair and moving through Oliver’s jacket. It almost highlighted his friend against beautiful sunset clouds, painting him perfectly with the golden light all around them.
It’s perfect, Benjamin thinks. This is perfect. Oliver snaps him out of his trance when he catches Benny’s eye and asks why he’s looking at him like that. At first, Benjamin doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
Then, he rightens his head from its tilted position and feels his vague smile fall with his expression.
“I was just...so enthralled with what you were saying,” Benjamin fibs.
Oliver gives him a disbelieving look, “Cool, so you didn’t catch any of it?”
Benjamin shakes his head, “Not a word. Sorry. Was it about the weather?”
“Wh- no. Why would it be about the weather?” Oliver asks.
Benjamin shrugs, “I’m having a vague sense of déjà vu.”
“Oh, I don’t know. Nothing important.”
Oliver laughs, loud, like a firework and a waterfall. “Wow! We’re cosmically bound by the universe but I can’t know what you’re thinking about?”
He’s joking, and Benjamin safely knows he is. He’s staring at Benny, his smile is wide, his face open and waiting for Benjamin to return his quip. His eyes shine. He stares at Benjamin like he is the entire world.
For once, he feels like maybe, just maybe, he deserves it.
“Well, cosmically bound is such a dramatic way to put it,” Benny says, rolling his eyes.
“Oh, bold words from ‘You ready, Oliver?’”
Benjamin laughs. He likes to think it sounds like a song of sorts.
Oliver’s hand is swinging by his side now, constantly switching between being brought up to fidget with and being dropped down for a second. Oliver fidgets by bringing his hands together, before he untangles them as he replies to Benjamin.
Before he can bring up his hand up again, Benjamin grabs it. He isn’t exactly sure why, but is even a little surprised when Oliver immediately laces their fingers together. Like he was waiting.
Oliver continues on with his ramble, and this time Benjamin listens. (It was about Lumbersweats, by the way. Called it.)
The only time he gets vaguely distracted is when he feels his mouth begin to curl up slightly in a smile.
