Atlanta United breaks MLS attendance record for first 3 matches of a season | May 2, 2017
- On Sunday, Atlanta United hosted D.C. United in front of a full crowd at Bobby Dodd Stadium, marking the club’s third consecutive sell-out at home to kick off its inaugural season. A combined total of 147,230 attended the team’s first-ever home matches, the most by any MLS club through its first three matches in the history of the league. The previous record, held by the L.A. Galaxy, was set in 1996 when they first entered the league and garnered a total of 130,073.
Breakdown of record numbers:Â
- March 5th v. New York Red Bulls: 55,297 - March 18th v. Chicago Fire: 45,922 - April 30th v. DC United: 46,011
- The March 5th match against the Red Bulls was ranked as the 4th highest attended soccer match worldwide on the weekend. - Capacity was – and will continue to be – smaller than the inaugural match due to a scheduled waterproofing renovation at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
Behind the Stripes: Rich Homie Quan | April 7, 2017 - Atlanta United invited ATLien and popular hip-hop artist Rich Homie Quan to join the club on March 18th for its second MLS home match ever (vs Chicago Fire).
Born and bred in the heart of East Atlanta, Rich Homie Quan received the honor of hammering in the club's Golden Spike, a piece of tradition signed by both player and fan representing the bond between the two and the beginning of a new era in the South. Â
 - Receiving the honor of hammering the Golden Spike was only fitting for one who's blood runs thick with the roots of ATL. On appearing from the tunnel in front of the sellout crowd and striking the club's spike, Quan said, “That moment felt good, it was a proud moment. It was definitely a milestone.” - The 4-0 victory against Chicago instilled a level of confidence in the hip-hop artist from Eastside, that same level of conviction and pride he has in all things ATL. “The way they’re playing, I’d expect them to go to the playoffs for sure,” said Quan. “It’s the city of Atlanta, we do everything big.”Â
- Quan was also impressed by the sheer number ATLiens there to cheer on the city's new team.“Over 45,000 people there, that’s a lot. That’s incredible.” - “It’s bringing a different dynamic to the city, it’s nothing like baseball, it’s nothing like basketball, it’s nothing like football,” stated Quan. For the East Atlanta hip-hop sensation, Major League Soccer, Atlanta United and this sport as a whole is defining a unique, unmatched, untapped culture in ATL.

+ Atlanta United has sold out its second straight home match at Bobby Dodd Stadium.  This makes the club the first expansion side and the second-ever MLS club to break the 100,000 mark in combined attendance in its first two home matches. + In an effort to enhance the fan experience at Bobby Dodd Stadium, the capacity was reduced from 55,000 for the home opener to approximately 45,000 for the Chicago match. + Following this week’s competition, Atlanta’s average attendance will be 50,000, placing the club number one in the league. The Seattle Sounders topped MLS in average attendance with 42,636 In 2016.
