Harry wakes up one day, and discovers that years have passed without him realising.
The last thing he remembers is the night before his seventeenth birthday. Lots of people try to explain what happened in the time he lost (Hermione sounding like she’s reciting from a text book, and Ron sounding like he’s trying to tell a quidditch match in order of what he found most awesome rather than consecutively), but Harry just can’t wrap his head around a year on the run, a war, and a final battle...
Especially since, every time he falls asleep, it feels more like ‘waking up’, and he’s always locked in a comfortable cell where his only visitor is Voldemort.

Though the concept has parallels to The Auction, Bleak Manor stands out with an edgy atmosphere, Draco's conflicted POV, concisely paced plot, well developed side characters (including a clever depiction of Parvati) and novel length word count. Being told from Draco's POV it proves to be a decent, edgy character study of him as he navigates his place in Voldemort's world and his evolving feelings for Hermione.

The girl whipped her head around, spotting the displaced Flesh Eaters sprawled out some distance away, one already getting haphazardly back to it's feet.
She then began searching for the source of the spell.
Draco approached cautiously, unwilling to startle her incase she mistook him for one of them, but at that moment she turned toward him, and they locked eyes.
He could see the disbelief mirrored in them.
"Granger?"
Harry fought to hold back tears as he was marched through the dim corridors, his hands secured behind him. He supposed he should have been thankful to the Dursleys for their opinion and treatment of him over the years, but he felt like his already miserable life had now taken a turn for the worst, and he almost wished for the finality his so-called family were about to be given.
Vernon, a greedy and foolish man, had been found guilty of embezzlement. He and his family were already reasonably wealthy, and yet he’d sought more, disregarding the inevitable consequences, thinking he wouldn’t get caught. He was wrong.
He was tried and found guilty by the Lord Emperor’s courts, and, as was the law for the ungifted folk, all members of his family were found guilty along with him and would receive his punishment. They were all to face death by curse at sundown.
All but Harry.
All the Dursleys possessions were cataloged and compared against the official register, and then they were redesignated as property of the Emperor, and this was where the Dursleys cruelty saved their nephews life. Harry had been officially registered as a slave, as a household possession, and was therefore not considered a person and so was not technically a member of Vernon’s family. While the Dursleys were dragged off to be executed, Harry was taken to be added to the Emperor’s estate.
Harry wakes up after the war, bound and in the centre of a ritual circle. A smug Voldemort greets Harry, telling him that the ritual had very carefully removed Harry’s memories.
Voldemort freely admits that Harry was his enemy, and that Harry is now his prisoner, that he has every intention of grooming Harry to be a loyal servant.
The ritual kept Harry’s knowledge of spells and potions, history and the social and political structure of the world. It kept Harry’s personality, allowing him to still be who he was. It kept Harry’s memories of the war, of Voldemort’s return and rise to power, but Harry lost everything of himself, memories of his own personal life, family, friends.
To maintain the ritual’s effects, Harry is given a potion to drink every day. To begin with, Voldemort watched closely to ensure he drank it as required, but as Harry carefully proved his loyalty, Voldemort’s attention slipped, trusting rather than enforcing.
Harry wasn’t sure if he wanted to know, wanted to remember, but Voldemort had said they were enemies, so he took the chance.
Over a few days, he pretends to take the potion, secretly disposing of it, only when Voldemort visits him next, the Dark Lord smiles cruelly.
“I lied. Your memories are gone. They can never return. My ritual saw to that. The effect of that potion was to turn your eyes from green to red, so if you decided not to take it, I could see if you’d betrayed me.”
