Altan’s limbal rings function sort of like a cat’s reflective eyes do, for night vision! I do not know if this is lore-supported, but he’s my lizard and I do what I want, so he can see pretty nicely in the dark. It’s not comparable to the light of day, obviously... but every little bit helps!

Being that he’s Kagon on his father’s side, the fact that Altan’s full name translates to ‘Sunset’ is a huge and very intentional statement from his mother to the man in question. Not quite night, but not exactly daytime either; Jaliqai did very much love Ogedei, even if there were tribal and interpersonal reasons that led to their split.

Altan has a massive, semi-ornery red mare that occasionally features in some of his scenes. She has a name, and only he knows it; he will never tell it to you, but he may one day tell you why he can’t.

Synnove

-> Has tried every new cafe and restaurant and pastry shop and food stall and food boat that opens in Limsa Lominsa at least once. Some she ends up heartily recommending, some she politely never goes to again; of those that go under (because in the Culinarians’ Guild home city, there is no way for every eatery to survive), some she wishes good riddance, some she’s sad to see go. As an adopted Lominsan, Synnove of course loves the Bismarck, but her favorite other places are: Mama Fyrwyb’s fish stall off the main drag of Hawker’s Alley (best seafood cocktail in all of Eorzea, fight her); Grisheld and Ancelot Reeve’s cafe, the Western Griffon, for the best traditional Ala Mhigan dishes (desserts included) you will eat outside of Gyr Abania proper or Aunt Angharad’s kitchen; the Sleepy Carbuncle, the tiny hole-in-the-wall coffee and tea shop in the shadow of Mealvaan’s Gate that has been keeping arcanists caffeinated with ridiculous sugary drink concoctions since Synnove’s second year at the Guild and is the single best-kept secret in Limsa Lominsa; and Tahehe Tahe’s catamaran that the old lalafell matron ties up on the pier neat the Gate twice a sennight at lunch to sell roasted meats and fresh-pressed fruit juices.

-> Despite being incredibly shy about her singing voice, Synnove has an excellent ear for music--partially because her aether synesthesia manifests as sound in addition to taste, and partially because of Rereha’s influence. And while Rereha can also “hear” aether to a degree, she’s no where near as sensitive as Synnove, and thus Synnove frequently gets roped into helping Rereha turn the music they hear into proper compositions. Yes, Synnove gets a writing credit, she is deeply embarrassed by it--but still a little pleased.

(Her singing voice, by the way, is a low, smoky contralto.)

-> Synnove started dying the tips of her hair green during her first year at the Arcanists’ Guild. She’s always been itching to try, but Isolde had Rules about what Her Daughter would do in Her House, and she had never wanted to risk getting her mother’s attention that way. A combination of Heron and Rereha egging her on via letters, plus her new friends at the Guild and an au ra associated with the Dutiful Sisters of the Edelweiss named Alakhai encouraging, finally got her to do it, and she loved the result, and has been dying her tips ever since. (Yes, it was one of the many things Isolde brought up during her and Synnove’s house-shaking screaming argument when Synnove went home for winter break, the same argument that resulted in Synnove having not spoken to Isolde since. As with many things that day, Isolde was not prepared for her daughter to refuse to be cowed, either on her choice in career or choice in hair color.)

The Carbuncles

-> While Tyr is considered the most responsible by, well, everyone, Galette is still oldest. She is spoiled and vain and a total diva with a vindictive streak, and normally she lets Tyr take point, but as The Eldest, she can pull rank. The twins generally accept this more readily; to them, Galette is Cool Big Sis! She teaches them to be sneaky and cunning and how to get extra treats of people who aren’t Mommy and Papa!

For Tyr and Ivar, it’s a little disconcerting seeing Galette take lead during a family huddle while Mama’s distracted with something. Tyr’s adapted a little better (and he certainly doesn’t mind taking a backseat on being the responsible boy), but Ivar gets tetchy because he doesn’t like change. (Yes, it is in fact kind of hilarious that the earth-aspected carbuncle is more adaptable than the fire-aspected one.) Ivar, in fact, will occasionally challenge Galette.

He has still not learned his older sister is perfectly capable and willing to yeet him into the nearest body or container of water (sometimes conveniently conjured up by a delighted Roksana).
