“I cringed at the recorded vocal track for Stronger at the concert. Using it is understandable cos it's not possible to do it live only the three of them, but I still didn't expect them to use a vocal track because they usually just adapt songs.”
The Full Theme for The Threshold, Vocal Track only. Unfortunately, I'm not as talented with instrumentation as I'd like, but I thought I'd give you guys a taste of what the full version of the theme song sounds like. If you're so inclined, I would love to hear what kind of accompaniment you would add to this! If you decide to use this track for sampling, please tag me at @thresholdpodcast and the show #thethreshold or #thresholdquestions If you allowed me to use your version I could credit you every episode, though that would at that point be an act of charity on your part. :)
Marvin Gaye I Heard It Through The Grapevine (A Capella) (Isolated Vocal Track) In The Groove (Tamla, 1968)
Nelson George, an historian of African American music, observed in his 1984 essay, "Marvin Gaye's Abiding Unrest":
In the ’60s Marvin bent his voice to the wishes of Motown, but he did so his way, vocally if not musically. He claimed he had three different voices, a falsetto, a gritty gospel shout, and a smooth midrange close to his speaking voice…. His version of “Grapevine” is so intense, so pretty, so goddamn black in spirit, it seems to catalogue that world of black male emotions Charles Fuller evokes in his insightful Soldier’s Play. [x|h/t]
