Happy fall semester and welcome to virgovetstudies (previously predvmstudies). With that name change, I am happy to announce that I officially applied to veterinary school! While I won't hear until about December, it's been a long way to this point and I'm very proud of myself.
That being said, let's get to know each other! So, here's a bit about me:
My name is Brie (she/her) and I'm a 24 year old non-traditional student. I have my Bachelor's of Science in Animal and Nutritional Science from West Virginia University and am currently taking classes at my local community college to finish out my vet school pre-reqs.
When I'm not studying, I'm usually the vet hospital where I work as a veterinary assistant. When not working or studying, I can be found writing, reading, playing D&D, and generally resting.
I started this studyblr to keep myself inspired as the journey to vet school and beyond is often arduous and laborious.
Currently I'm taking three classes: Genetics, Biochemistry, and Astrobiology. I'm aiming for an A in all three courses, and depending on what happens with my vet school application, may be applying to Master's programs this spring.
Some tumblrs who inspire and motivate me are: @emmastudies, @tranquilstudy, @youllwinintheend, @lizziedoesvetpath, @vetmedirl, @myhoneststudyblr
I'm starting my VMCAS application today!
Any tips on where to get inspiration for the essay questions? I wonder how others have responded
Applying to grad school
The grad school applications are a bit overwhelming. I’ve detailed some of the things I wish I had known before starting my application in my blog, particularly aimed at nontrad students. Hopefully you might get something from it!

Most vet students I talk to tell me that the majority of their classmates are NOT straight from undergrad and did NOT get in on their first try. They said most people were accepted on their 2nd, 3rd, etc. application, and people accepted on their first try is the minority. They also say not everyone is 22... there are people in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s. So don't feel bad if you don't get in your first try! ----------- I was rejected by 6 US schools my first try without even getting interviews invitations. And this is after working my butt off in undergraduate school for 5 years and accumulating several thousand hours of volunteer/employment work with animals over the past 10 years. In addition to spending 3-4 months working on my application essays and VMCAS application. The application which cost me over a thousand dollars. VMCAS application fees ($195 for the first school, $100 for each additional), plus individual school supplemental application fees (varies - but in my experience was $50-100 per school), plus sending official transcripts/exam scores ($9 per school I applied to for transcript and $30 per school I applied to for GRE scores), plus paying to take the GRE Exam ($200). Plus flying out and staying into hotels for interviews if you're lucky enough to get one. It's extremely frustrating. You can easily spend $4000 on VMCAS if you decided to apply to every AVMA accredited vet school in desperate attempt to increase your chances of being accepted. There are 30 US AVMA-accredited veterinary schools and 18 additional international AVMA-accredited veterinary schools. Please compare that to the 179 human medical schools in the US alone. --------- (Which is why after my rejection I decided not to wait another year to apply, resulting in another 2 years before starting vet school, and spending another thousand dollars on the VMCAS application -- instead applying to Ross University to start this September - just waiting to hear back!)

Sorry I haven't really posted but I GOT INTO VET SCHOOL! I'm moving June 1 and start classes June 21! So pumped to follow my lifelong dream of becoming a veterinarian!
Got an interview with Illinois!
Kind of expected, but after Mizzou giving me nothing I was kind of worried. 2 interviews and an alternate status, so that’s (slightly) better than last year!
I should also hear from Wisconsin with an acceptance or denial by the end of February, probably around the same time as Illinois and Mississippi make their decisions.
Nothing from Ross either, but it seems like they do everything a lot closer to the beginning of the semester than other schools.
One of my club members received this. I don’t think the website is updated yet as I couldn’t find it, but I figured I would put it on here for those who are applying during 2017. If anyone has more information on this, it would be greatly appreciated.
