“Y/n, you gotta come over,” Carly sighs as you sit in her apartment, eyes widening at her suggestion once again. “they’ll love you, it’s not as bad as you’re making out to be.” 

Glancing up from your phone, you focus on your best friend who rests her hands on her hips. “They’re chill people, Y/n.” Nolan inputs and Carly smugs proudly as he walks past with Frankie trailing behind him toward the kitchen. 

“Ugh, fine.” You give in, rising to your feet as you grab your bag before following Carly out of her front door. “But if they hate me, I’m blaming you.” 

Carly rolls her eyes as she unlocks her car. “As if that’d happen, Y/n.”

“Okay, so maybe Jeff didn’t exactly warm to me.” You explain to Nolan as you walk through the door of Carly’s place.

Nolan looks over to Carly who simply gives him a ‘don’t ask’ look as she sits down beside you. “It wasn’t that bad.” Carly tries to ease the situation but based on your raised eyebrow and frown, it’s enough to know it definitely was that bad. 

“What happened?” Nolan asks, standing in the kitchen as he carries on preparing dinner. 

You groan loudly as you grab a cushion, burying it into your chest. “They were all super chill, but Jeff barely spoke two words to me.” You begin to explain, and Nolan nods along, not thinking too much of it. “But whenever he did, it was some kinda snide remark about my degree and career path.” 

“Oh,” Nolan seethes as Carly lowers her head, never having seen Jeff act like that to someone close before. “maybe he was just having a bad day?” Nolan tries to ease the situation, but you simply throw your head back and close your eyes. 

“It wasn’t like you were weird with him,” Carly comments, thinking over the interaction that you briefly had. 

“Exactly. I mean, I was just myself.” You explain and Nolan chuckles. 

“That’ll do enough to put him off.” He teases, receiving the cushion you were cuddling thrown in his general vicinity.

“What’s the plan?” Jeff asks as he walks into David’s as Todd follows behind him. 

After greeting Todd, Natalie checks her phone quickly before responding. “You know that junkyard where you pay to destroy stuff? Well, we booked a slot for everyone to have a go.” Natalie explains.

“Sounds like it’ll be a good release.” Todd rubs his hands together in excitement. “So everyone’s coming then?” He quickly looks over to Jeff who quirks an eyebrow as Natalie nods. 

“Yeah, oh, and Carly’s bringing her friend who’s visiting,” Natalie adds and Todd can’t wipe the smile from his face after seeing Jeff’s expression drop. 

“But she’s too sweet to do this kinda shit.” Jeff speaks up. “Come on, did you see the way she reacted when I mentioned my weed stash that I used to sell? She practically disappeared into the couch.” Jeff tuts as David walks into the living room. 

“You talking about Y/n?” David questions, not even looking up from his phone. “She coming, Nat?” 

“Yep, Carly texted me earlier, she’ll pick Y/n up along with Erin and meet us there.” Natalie comments and David smiles brightly.

“I bet she’d kick ass if she had to,” David mutters, catching Jeff off guard. “what? You think she’s all soft and sweet completely?” 

Jeff scoffs as he crosses his arms. “I’m not saying that,” He starts, looking around as everyone focuses on him, waiting for him to continue. “I just have a vibe from her.”

“What are you a witch now?” Natalie jokes and Todd chuckles under his breath before Jeff shoots him a look. “She’s a chill person, Jeff. No one is saying you have to fall in love with her.” 

“I know that.” Jeff mumbles before grabbing his bag. “So, we going or what?”

“Just take it easy, yeah?” Erin chuckles as you climb out of the car and you shrug a shoulder. 

“Of course, like I’m going to lose my shit.” You joke and Carly glances over her shoulder, giving you a quick warning look. “It’s perfectly legal here, right?” 

“Got the authentication certificates to prove it.” David laughs and Jeff squints as you stand in the sunlight, resting your hands on your hips. “You got some kinda problem with the law, Y/n?” 

Jeff raises an eyebrow as you simply smile, not quite giving an answer as you simply pick up a hammer. “Where’d we start?” 

After a half-hour, Jeff can already see a different side to you. Within the first few minutes of having the safety procedure you were free to destroy whatever you wish and Jeff watched as you threw a hammer into a windshield of a broken car. 

“She got some kinda anger issues?” Jeff nervously laughs as he pauses, looking over as you kick in the door to another old car with a bright smile on your face. “Or just fucking insane?” 

David chuckles as Carly walks over. “You didn’t tell him, did you?” Carly remarks, and Jeff looks over to David who simply shakes his head. 

“Tell me what?” Jeff asks as he listens to the sound of glass smashing and you cheering. 

“Y/n’s recently been cleared from probation,” Carly explains, and Jeff’s eyes widen. “I mean, it wasn’t like she killed someone. It was a drug deal gone wrong.” 

“Sound familiar?” David raises an eyebrow to Jeff who focuses on you across the junkyard as you joke around with Zane as he takes photos of you. 

“Huh.” Jeff mutters, now putting the pieces together as to why you tensed up about him mentioning his weed, about your career choices and prospering onwards. “So, she’s not such a good girl after all?” 

Glancing over your shoulder, you smile to Carly as Jeff can’t stop eyeing you up with a smirk on his lips. “Is Jeff constipated?” You ask Zane who follows your line of vision and laughs lightly. 

“Oh Y/n,” Zane sighs as he pats your arm. “You’ll learn soon enough.”

“Or I’ll just see for myself.” You joke back before putting the hammer down and wander toward the trio with a bright smile. “That was definitely the release I needed.” You happily breathe out, watching as Jeff clenches his fists. 

“One hell of a release, Y/n.” Jeff comments and Carly rolls her eyes at his change in attitude. “Didn’t know you had that in you.” 

You glance over to Carly before stepping closer to Jeff, eyeing him up and down for a moment before tutting. “There’s a lot you don’t know about me Jeff.” You remark before stepping away and picking up a sledgehammer, running back toward Erin who happily greets you before you smash another car. 

“I’ll have fun finding out.” Jeff mutters, following behind you as Carly sighs.

To everyone who knew you in the squad, you were definitely the Mom. When you were first introduced, you could tell everyone was unsure about how Jeff, an ex convict ended up with a sweetheart like yourself. 

The thing is, it dates back further than that. You and Jeff met in High School during Chemistry class. Both of you were paired to do an assignment, and after causing almost several chemical burns and three trips to the ER, Jeff asked you out. 

Since then, you’ve always been together, through thick and thin- even when he was sent away for six months. 

“Hey guys, I brought coffee!” You announce as you walk into David’s, seeing Natalie with Todd, Ilya, Erin and Carly. “Oh, and Jeff. “ 

Jeff walks in behind you, rolling his eyes as Todd waves to him whilst Natalie chuckles under her breath. 

“You’re such a sweetheart, you know that?” Jeff asks you once you’ve sat down on the sofa, sipping your own coffee. 

Removing the cup from your lips, you simply nod in response resulting in Jeff to wrap his arms around your waist, pulling you onto his lap as you laugh light-heartedly. 

“Why is it so hard to find what you guys have?” Carly sighs as you smile sympathetically toward her. 

“Carly you have a boyfriend.” Erin nudges Carly whose eyes widen momentarily. 

“I take back my previous statement, judge, please forgive me. And Nolan.” Carly comments before returning to her laptop, busying herself. 

“Sometimes I can’t believe you have been together for eleven years.” David pitches in, lifting his head up from behind his laptop to look up at you both. 

“Does to me.” You whistle, receiving a playful jab in your side from Jeff. “What? Does it feel like yesterday to you, huh?” 

Jeff shrugs his shoulder. “You’re just as beautiful as the day I met you.” He tells you and both Carly and Erin fawn over how sweet Jeff can be sometimes when you’re around. 

“Honestly if you do not get married and let us be bridesmaids I’ll be pissed.” Erin states. “I mean bridesmaid for bridesmaid, right?” She reminds you, and Jeff’s grip on you tightens. 

Looking down at the floor, you hum in response. “Yeah, I mean, I might not fit into my bridesmaid dress, that’s the only thing.” You speak up, slowly glancing around at everyone. 

A series of confused expressions meet your eyes in response. “You’ve not gotten fat in lockdown, Y/n.” Todd chimes in, and Jeff nods in appreciation. 

“Not like that, Todd.” You tell him, starting to form a smile on your lips as you look down at Jeff who smiles brightly back at you. 

Natalie focuses on how Jeff’s hands glide across to your stomach, and she pushes herself off of Todd. 

“No, shut the fuck up.” She blurts out, rising to her feet. “You’re pregnant?” 

Her question has a domino effect as joyous looks spark on everyone’s faces, except David who is lost in thought until Natalie hits his arm. 

“Ow,” He mutters, rubbing his arm. “what did I miss?” 

“I’m pregnant.” You tell him as everyone remains in a state of shock, no one moving as Erin stares at you with wide eyes whilst Carly is rendered speechless. 

“Nice work, buddy.” David reaches out to fist bump Jeff who gladly accepts.

“Of course that’s your reaction.” Natalie sighs and you rise to your feet, accepting a gracious hug from her. “I can’t believe you’re going to be a Mom.” She states.

“Neither can I,” You laugh nervously. 

“How long have you guys been hiding this?” Todd asks as he pulls away from a hug with Jeff. 

Jeff looks back at you before scratching the back of his neck. “Like, three months? I mean, we’ve been planning for a while, hence why we moved.” 

“Why didn’t you tell us sooner?” David speaks up whilst you and Jeff share a look. 

Resting his hand on your back, Jeff answers on his and your behalf. “We just wanted something private for a while, make sure that we knew this was real.” He explains, having been there the moment you found out to your first scan. The entire experience so far has been an ordeal, but one you wouldn’t take back for anything. 

“I was scared something might happen, and everyone would know.” You add, a sad smile lining your lips momentarily. “But it all seems okay, and we wanted you guys to know too.” Your smile brightens as Erin wipes her eyes before hugging you once more.

“I can’t  believe you’re actually gonna be a real Mom, like not just looking after us kinda Mom.” She blubbers, and you laugh along as tears well up in your own eyes. “But you’re going to be an amazing Mom, Y/n.” Erin adds, squeezing you lightly before pulling away with a guilty look.

“You didn’t squeeze too hard, don’t worry. The baby won’t pop out of my vagina if you hug me too tight.” You joke, resting your hands on your small bump. 

“I can’t wait, does this mean I’m God Father?” David beams at the thought whilst Todd points to himself, nodding to Jeff who shrugs his shoulders. 

“Do you know what gender they are yet?” Natalie asks and you shake your head in response. 

“We kinda want it to be a surprise.” You tell them, Jeff smiling down at you, now able to see your bump more visibly as opposed to hiding it. “But whatever happens, we want you guys to be apart of their lives, and ours still. If you’ll have us?” 

David scoffs lightly, “We can’t get rid of you guys!” He announces. “Especially with a child on the way, gotta afford to get the little fella off to college.” He mutters in a baby voice, and you can’t help but long to hear that from Jeff. 

“Fuck, Jeff’s going from daddy to dad.” Carly laughs, and Jeff frowns lightly before you turn back to him, away from everyone else.

“You know, I’m gonna marry you someday,” Jeff mumbles as you curl up against his chest as you struggle to keep your eyes open long enough to focus on the film.

“That so?” You whisper, looking up at him as he smiles down to you, his fingers gliding through your hair as you hum in content.

Jeff nods, unable to hide his grin as your eyes close.

It’s true though, Jeff really means it when he says it. Even if you think he’s just joking around. As a matter of fact, in all his life, Jeff has never been more certain about something. That being with you, and spending the rest of his life alongside you, and only you. After everything he’s been through, the consequences he’s faced from his actions you’re just a ray of sunshine.

You didn’t care about his past, the things he once did. He’s grown, matured as a person into someone you want to be with and love him regardless.

Standing in the doorway, Jeff’s bags pile up outside whilst Todd patiently waits for his friend to depart from his house. If only it were easier said than done.

“Do you have to go?” You pout as your arms remain around his waist, not wanting to let go.

Jeff chuckles as he glances behind you, seeing Todd filming on his camcorder in the pathway. “I’ll only be gone a few days, baby.” Jeff reminds you, hearing you sigh loudly as your hands begin to slip away from him.

“Just, stay safe.” You nudge his arm as he picks up his bags before leaning down and kissing you softly. “I love you.”

“I love you too.” He blows one last kiss to you before walking out from your house, leaving you with Nerf sat by your side watching his Dad get into the passenger seat of Todd’s car.

“You really love her, don’t you?” Todd speaks up, noticing the way Jeff looks at you as if you’re the only person in the entire world.

Jeff can’t help but think of the ring he’s picked out and reserved at the jewellers, a quick pitstop on route to his and Todd’s destination. “I do, Toddy.” Jeff sighs as they pull away, moving further away from you, but closer to the next step in your future.

“So, airport?” Todd looks over to Jeff before returning his attention to the road.

Shaking his head, Jeff points to the left hand turn coming up, the opposite direction. “I just wanna make a short stop first.” Jeff states as Todd turns the car, and as they follow the road Jeff can see the old shop sign.

Feeling his heartbeat quicken pace, it isn’t something that goes unnoticed by Todd. “We going where I think we’re going?” Todd asks with a hesitant smile before Jeff points at the shop whilst Todd parks up just down the road.

“Yeah.” Jeff runs his fingers through his hair as he opens the passenger door, hearing Todd mutter his name as his right leg hangs out of the car.

“This is it, huh?” Todd chuckles, an attempt to hide his nerves for his friend. “You’re gonna ask her?”

“I really am, Todd. Got it all planned out.” Jeff states, feeling that familiar sense of uneasiness return to his stomach as he climbs out fully, his arm resting on the top of the car as Todd remains in the driver's seat. “Gotta say, I’ve never been more certain of anything.” He admits before turning away from the car, crossing the street toward the shop in question.

Whilst Jeff is crossing, Todd’s fingers tap on the steering wheel, humming to himself. Yet, Jeff doesn’t make it across the road.

Glancing through his rearview mirror, seeing a car speeding down the narrow street, shortly followed by a sharp break and a loud thud.

“No, no.” Todd mutters, feeling everything play too quickly for him to process. “Jeff?!” Todd yells, looking behind his car to see the small car in question with the window smashed as the driver crawls out, coughing violently.

A few shop owners and customers gather around behind the driver's car, some converse whilst others call for help. “Is he alive?” Todd hears one lady question whilst another bends down, her feet sticking out from behind the car as Todd hesitantly walks closer.

Fearing the worst, Todd took a deep breath as he moved between the gathering crowd to see what his fears be a reality.

“Jeff? Buddy?” Kneeling down, Todd couldn’t stop his hands from shaking as he reaches out as blood dribbles from Jeff’s mouth as his eyes remain closed. “Has someone called for some help? Fuck!” He looks around, desperation lacing his tone as faces blur together whilst blood coats his face and exposed limbs.

“An ambulance is on its way.” Someone speaks up, resting a hand on Todd’s shoulder with a sympathetic smile.

“You’ll be okay, buddy,” Todd mutters, forcing back his tears as Jeff’s limps are splayed out, lifelessly.

You couldn’t process the phone call as it came through. Part of you thought it was a sick prank call until you heard Todd’s hushed voice down the line, loud enough to understand without it cracking.

David picked you up with Natalie, understanding you were in no fit position to drive.

No words were exchanged as you sat silently in the passenger seat, thinking about what Todd had told you. He hadn’t even left town, they were making a pit stop and some sick fuck was speeding.

Tearing the images from your mind, you open the car door and rush inside without checking your friends were close behind.

“Is Jeff Wittek here?” You ask bluntly, remaining emotionless as you bite your lip, holding back a sob.

The receptionist looks up at you before averting her attention to her screen. You wait painfully as she types into the system, now aware of David and Natalie either side of you. Natalie rests her hand on your forearm, squeezing it lightly as a single tear spills from your eye.

“He’s in room 207. Turn left down the hall, and three floors up.” The receptionist tells you and before she can ask if you need anything else, you’re gone.

You can’t keep up with your own feet as you race to his room, a distortion of voices play as Natalie and David converse as they try to catch up to you, but you’re oblivious to everyone else.

Slowing down, you can see someone hunched over on a seat outside of a room. A tuft of brown hair, slouched form and his hands clasped in each other.

“Toddy?” You call out weakly, seeing him rise to his feet and rush over, engulfing you in a tight hug as you sob against him.

Natalie and David hang back as Todd focuses on Natalie with watery vision. “I’m so sorry, Y/n.” Todd mumbles into your hair as your whole body shakes. “He, he just wanted to get something. I should’ve gone with him.” Todd rambles, but you lean back, shaking your head to him.

“It’s not your fault, Todd.” You tell him bluntly. “Do not blame yourself. It was an accident.” You breathe deeply as you force yourself to look at the door number behind him. “Is he, is he awake?”

Todd scratches the back of his neck as he takes a hold of your hand, guiding you closer toward the room. “He’s still unconscious, but he’ll be alright,” Todd tells you, but you can tell there’s something else. “but he got hurt bad, Y/n.”

Taking a shaky breath, you nod. “How bad are things?”

Shutting your eyes, you wipe away your tears forcefully as you listen to Todd listing off Jeff’s injuries. Two broken legs, fractured ribs, a collapsed lung. He was lucky to make it out alive.

“Can I see him?” You question quietly.

Todd opens the door and guides you inside to the room where Jeff is being monitored.

As you lift your eyes up, the sight before you breaks your heart.

You listen to the sound of his monitor beeping as various tubes are connected to him. Discomfort is worn heavily in his face, despite him being unconscious as stitches line his cheeks and forehead. Bruises are starting to form across his exposed skin, but the damage evidently lies deeper than that.

A sob wracks through you as you cover your mouth, muffling the sound as you fall to the ground.

“It’s okay, Y/n.” Todd hushes as he helps you to your feet. “Jeff’s strong, we know this.” He reassures you as you step closer toward your boyfriend, sitting beside him.

Reaching out, you rest your hand alongside his.

Both you and Todd sit in silence until visiting hours are over, and at this point, you can feel your entire body is numb. You didn’t want to leave him, you didn’t want Jeff to be alone in that room, left in pain without anyone by his side.

Two days you were sat in the room, sitting in silence beside him as Doctors and Nurses passed by. Checks were made, vitals were monitored and silence was a frequent friend.

You saw many faces, most with sympathy etched into their smiles as they tried not to focus on the damages covering Jeff’s body or the tiredness lining your eyes. It felt like an ongoing cycle, just waiting for any kind of update.

Everyone was just waiting, waiting for him to wake up. And after three solid days of waiting, sitting by his side for as long as you were allowed to, Jeff started to stir in the bed.

“Where the fuck am I?” He mumbles, and you quickly jolt up from sleeping at an angle on the plastic chair beside his bed.

“Jeff?” You call out, blinking rapidly as your vision begins to focus on his confused expression as he winces. “Oh thank god.” You reframe from wrapping your arms around him, knowing he’s still fragile. “I, I’ll go get someone, I’ll be right back.” You tell him quickly as you rise to your feet, finding the first Nurse to pass you by.

Whilst you talk to a nurse, Jeff looks around the room as the events of that afternoon replay. He remembers seeing a blue car speeding toward him and being on the ground with faces surrounding him. But after that, everything is simply blank.

Jeff watches as you walk back in, your angelic smile plastered across your face as bags wear heavy beneath your eyes.

Sitting beside him, you rest his hand in yours as the Nurse checks his vitals and explains exactly what has happened to him. As you listen to the Nurse, you feel Jeff faintly squeezing your hand, letting you know he can feel you beside him.

“So, I got hit bad, huh?” Jeff tries to joke but winces at the pain spreading across his ribs.

“Take it easy, babe.” You remind him as he lies back down, letting out a strained sigh.

“Seen worse in jail, let me tell you that.” He continues his efforts to make you smile, even if tears fill your eyes as you focus on him, how casts cover both legs and bandages across his stomach. “Hey, Y/n, I’m okay.” He reaches out as you lean closer toward him.

Feeling his hand rest across your cheek is enough to comfort you as you let out a shaky breath. “I know, I just, I don’t know what I would do if you were,” You struggle to finish your sentence as Jeff wipes away your tears that fall.

“Don’t think ‘bout that, baby.” He hushes you, peering over your shoulder to see Todd leaning against the door frame. “If it isn’t my saviour,” Jeff calls out and you laugh lightly, leaning back as Todd walks in.

Rising to your feet, Todd hugs you lightly as you pass him and exit the room in search of the bathroom.

“Hey man.” Todd sighs as he sits down, taking your seat temporarily whilst you’re gone. “Good to see you awake, you, you had us worried for a moment.”

“Just a moment?” Jeff raises an eyebrow, ignoring the bruising around his eye and the stitches below.

Todd shakes his head as he reaches into his pocket, taking out a small velvet box. “I, I picked this up, thought you might want it.” Sliding the small box across the bed, Jeff hides it underneath the covers of the hospital sheets.

“Thank you, Todd.” Jeff smiles, and Todd simply nods as you return.

“Did I miss anything?” You call out as Todd stands up, moving away from the chair as he shakes his head.

“Nothing too eventful. Good luck getting him to pee for the next few months though.” Todd laughs, nudging you lightly as you roll your eyes, missing the wink he sends Jeff.

For the next few hours, you just sat with Jeff as the Doctors explained the next step in Jeff’s recovery. It wasn’t going to be easy, and you understood that there would be hard times, but you weren’t going anywhere.

“Thank you, Doc.” Jeff speaks up, processing everything he’s just been told.

“Looks like you’ll be my bitch for a while, huh?” You tell Jeff, hoping to see a smile cross his lips to ease the pressure of the detailed recovery process.

Jeff chuckles, looking up at you as you keep a smile on your face. “You’re seriously something else, Y/n.” Jeff shakes his head, watching as you shrug a shoulder. “You know, I’m gonna marry you someday.” He reminds you, and you laugh lightly.

“I know, baby. You tell me almost every week!” You smile brightly, but Jeff shakes his head as he reaches into the sheets, taking a hold of the velvet box.

“I really mean it, and, and I know this isn’t probably the way I envisioned it. And I can’t even stand, let alone get on one knee right now, but,” Taking a deep breath, Jeff reveals the diamond inside of the box, looking up as your lips part.

“Jeff,” You start, but Jeff shakes his head.

“Y/n, you’re unlike anyone I’ve ever met. You, you’ve seen past all the shit in my life, you’re willing to help me through this and wheel me everywhere for possibly months. I can’t imagine being with anyone else, and I don’t want to.” Jeff reels off all of his thoughts as you remain in a state of shock. “So, Y/n Y/l/n, will you marry me?” He finally asks the question, feeling his heart pause as he awaits your response.

“Seriously? You’re siding with him?” You scoff loudly as your parents watch you force your chair back and rise to your feet.

“That’s right, run on back to your boo. I bet it won’t be long til he’s locked up again.” Your brother remarks, quickly receiving a stern glare from your Mom.

Your gaze softens as you look to your Mom. “Is that what you all think?” You ask weakly as your lower lip begins to tremble. “Why can’t you just be happy for me?” You mumble before turning away, missing your Mom rising to her feet to explain.

By the time she makes it around the table, she jumps at the sound of the front door slamming shut.

“She’ll understand, Ma.” Your brother comments, but your Dad simply shakes his head.

“Jeff’s a good guy, kid.” Your Dad states, but your brother chuckles under his breath. “Just because he’s different from Joey doesn’t make him a bad guy.”

“I don’t know, Dad.” Your brother sighs as your Mom walks back in with a frown etched in her expression.

You couldn’t stop the tears from falling down your cheeks as you drove. Your hands kept shaking as you held back the sob that was erupting in your throat, but you had to hold it in, just for another ten minutes.

Yet, you weren’t that lucky as a call came through on your phone. Without looking, you pressed the green button on your dash. “Look, Mom, I’m not in the mood to argue some more, okay?” You blurt out, saliva gathering in your mouth as you continue to cry.

“Baby?” Your eyes go wide as you glance down, seeing the caller ID. “Are you alright?” Jeff asks as his voice is laced with concern, but you go quiet. “Y/n, you still there?” 

“Yeah,” You breathe out as the lights above change to green, and you carry on with your drive home. “sorry, I thought you were someone else.” You try to laugh, but it feels as if someones stuffed cotton into your cheeks. 

Jeff shifts in his seat, lifting his finger up to quieten Jonah and the team as he walks away to the balcony, closing the door behind him. “Is everything okay, doll?” He asks quietly, matching your volume as you nod to yourself. 

“Course,” You bite your lower lip as silence looms for a second before Jeff hums. “I’m just going to head home, have an early night.” You take a steady breath to disguise the shake in your voice, but Jeff caught it, just. 

“Okay,” Jeff answers, glancing over his shoulder to see his team still in a full discussion as Jonah sits idly. “I, I’ll see you tomorrow?” He opens the doors back to the apartment as you mutter a quick yes, hanging up afterwards. 

“You okay, dude?” One member of Jeff’s team speaks up, noticing the change in Jeff’s demeanour.. 

Shaking his head, Jeff gathers his things. “I, I’ve gotta go.” He mutters, and his team simply nod, understanding whilst Jonah watches as Jeff leaves before tutting. 

“All this for some girl.” He rolls his eyes before being greeted with a series of unimpressed stares. “Alright, I’ll go too.”

Emerging from your bedroom clad in a fluffy dressing gown, you throw your towel on the floor in the general vicinity of the wash basket before collapsing onto your sofa. “God,” You mumble to yourself as you rub your eyes, removing the last of the tears for now. 

You lean over to grab your phone, knowing a night of scrolling endlessly on social media is in order as a healthy coping mechanism. Yet, a knock on your door interrupts your plans. 

Pausing for a second, you glance over your shoulder to your knife block wondering whether it’s worth grabbing one- just be to safe that is. 

Deciding against it, you keep the door latch on as you open it, peering through to see your boyfriend stood there with a bag of shopping and a bright smile. “Hi,” He mutters. “I, I wanted to stop by, keep you company.” 

Jeff steps back as you close the door and remove the hatch before reopening it and jumping into his arms. 

Clearly taken aback, Jeff drops the bags and holds you tightly as you sniffle into his shoulder. “Thank you,” You mumble as tears pool in your eyes once more. 

“No need, doll.” Jeff reminds you as he watches you turn around and head into your apartment whilst he picks up the bag of groceries. “I assumed you didn’t finish dinner at your parents, so I brought dessert.” Jeff lifts up the cake, chuckling as you wipe the drool from your chin. 

“Sexy, huh?” You joke and Jeff simply nods, grabbing two forks before sitting beside you on the sofa. 

Immediately, you curl up against your boyfriend as he plays the TV. “Do you wanna talk about it?” He quietly asks. 

You’re quick to shake your head and nuzzle closer into him, “Not yet, I just wanna forget for a while.” You explain. 

“Okay,” Jeff replies as he leans down, kissing the top of your head. “whenever you’re ready angel. I’ll be here to listen.” He whispers as your eyes begin to droop and a blanket is tugged over you. 

“You’re the best boyfriend, Jeff.” You yawn.

“They’re intense at times,” Jeff preempts as you walk up to his family house, already hearing the yells of excitement from the garden.

Resting your arm around his hips, you chuckle lightly. “Jeff, I’m sure they’ll be fine.” You shrug it off as Jeff takes a deep breath before knocking on the front door.

Within seconds, the sounds of commotion ring through the house before the front door is opened. “Ah!” A lady happily cheers as she wraps her arms around you tightly. “Oh my god, you’re more beautiful in person!” Her thick New York accent lining her tone as you smile over to Jeff who winces as your hands begin to feel numb.

“Ma, let her go. She’s gotta breathe.” Jeff interrupts, and with that, his Mom lets you go but sighs happily.

“I mean it, sweetheart. What’re you doing with a guy like our Jeff?” She jokes with you, bringing you through the house as you glance up at photos on the walls of Jeff and his sister throughout the years. “He was a cute kid,” She comments as you make it outside, seeing a large table and several faces looking up at you as they place their deck of cards down.

“You must be Y/n, oh my god we’ve heard so much about ya!” You’re greeted once again with who you assume to be Jeff’s Dad as he puts his cigar down before kissing your cheek and hugging you. 

“It’s lovely to meet you.” You smile brightly as you wave to everyone around the table. 

“Take a seat, doll, join us.” Jeff’s Dad instructs as he pulls a chair out for you. “That’s Manny, my brother, then we have Teresa, she’s a Saint really,” He teases and Teresa rolls her eyes, putting her cards back down on the table. “and that’s Jeff’s sister, who I’m sure you’ve met.” 

You nod along as she rises from her seat and brings you into another hug, something you quickly adjust to as being the norm around here. “Good to see you Y/n, where’s my brother gone now?” She asks with a small sigh, looking over your shoulder as Jeff’s Mom appears without Jeff. 

“No idea, maybe he’s gone to the bathroom?” You suggest before sitting back down. 

“Okay doll, we’re playing bullshit, you in?” Jeff’s Dad asks as he shuffles the deck of cards before dealing them. 

“I’ve not played before, but I’ll give it a go.” You nervously laugh, suddenly wishing Jeff was sitting next to you in order to ease your anxiety as all eyes glance up at you. 

“It’s easy really, just follow my cue,” Jeff’s Dad nods as he tugs on his cap, and the game ensues. 

After ten minutes or so, Jeff wanders into the garden to find you perfectly comfortable and laughing away with his family. “Manny,” You trail off as you look up at the man across from you with sharp eyes. “I call bullshit!” You yell and Manny groans as he reveals his cards, proving you were right after all. 

A series of cheers greet you as you high five Teresa and Jeff’s Mom whilst his Dad rubs it into Manny that he’s a bad liar. 

“Did I miss much?” Jeff asks as he sits down beside you, seeing any sign of nerves you previously wore had washed away. 

You shake your head as you smile to his Mom who feels her heart swell at the sight of you both. “A round or two of bullshit, but you can catch up.” You tease, squeezing his thigh lightly before he rests his hand on yours.

As if your day couldn’t possibly get any worse, by some force of fate, it did.

You overlooked waking up with a headache, thinking it was due to the intense screen time from last nights editing session and carried on with your morning. However, when your meeting with a brand and your manager got pushed forward two hours, you were in a rush.

David watched mindlessly as you ran around the house, grabbing your things and making yourself look presentable whilst chugging a litre of water.

“You want me to drive you?” David suggests as you finally pause by the front door, grabbing your car keys.

Looking back, you smile sweetly at your boyfriend still in his PJs holding a go-cup of coffee in his hand for you.

“I’ll be okay, thank you though, Dave.” You walk over, kissing him quickly before taking the cup and walking out the door.

As the front door closes behind you, you check your phone to see the location of the restaurant you’ll be going to before sitting in your car.

“Okay, I’ve got an hour to get there.” You mutter to yourself as you turn the car on, only to see several warning signs cross your dashboard. “Fuck.” You rest your head against the wheel, hearing the prolonged beep before David walks out to see your head down in your car.

Interrupting our internal monologue of doom, David knocks on the window. “You wanna take my car?” David dangles his keys you sigh, climbing out of the car and wrap your arms around him loosely.

“Thank you, boo.” You mumble into his chest as he rubs your back before pulling away. “I’ll be careful, I promise.” You tell him, watching as he nods along.

“I know you will, just take it steady, don’t speed and have a good lunch.” David squeezes your hand lightly as he places the keys into your palm before retreating back to the house, leaving you to take his car.

Arriving at your lunch meeting on time was a miracle, and thankfully your headache started to die down.

Walking through the doors after the valet took David’s car, you let out a sigh of relief to see your manager sat at the bar.

“Hey, Amanda.” Amanda immediately twirls in her chair with a bright smile before embracing you into a hug.

“Thank god you’re here! Try this it’s delicious.” Amanda beans as she passes you a glass of something with bright eyes.

Sniffing it, you quirk an eyebrow before lowering it to the table. “I’ll pass, thanks.” You chuckle whilst Amanda shrugs a shoulder before taking another sip before the brand rep walks in.

With a smile on your face, you leave the restaurant with Amanda babbling on about the opportunities that’ll come from this brand, but all you can focus on is the group of people surrounding the valet.

“What’s going on?” You speak up as you approach the valet driver who stands guard whilst all these kids turn around with wide eyes upon seeing you.

“Y/n! Oh my god, where’s David?!” A series of shouts suddenly surround you as Amanda is swept away, leaving you isolated as the valet driver hands you David’s key.

“He’s not here? Seriously.” One girl scoffs loudly as you climb into the driver's seat, that familiar pounding in your left temple returning as you hear kids and teens alike shouting through the windows and laughing at something.

Closing your eyes momentarily, you start the car up only to see a warning flash onto the display screen.

“You’ve got to be kidding.” You groan seeing two of the tires have been cut.

Turning your head, you look out with annoyance as fans continue to film you whilst you’re sat in the car.

You try your best to block them all out as you dial David, who picks up after almost five rings.

“Hey, how was lunch?” David asks happily, pausing as he can hear the background noise through the line. “Are you alright?” His tone changes to one of concern, and as he listens to a prolonged sigh coming from you, it says more than words need to.

“Your tires have been cut, I don’t know if it happened on the way or after I left the car, but they’re going to need fixing.” You explain, wishing you could just be back home, lying in bed with the curtains closed and in the comfort of your boyfriend's arms.

“I’ll come and get you, Natalie!” David yells for Natalie, but you quickly interrupt him.

“Dave, it’ll only make matters worse, trust me.” You tell him, knowing if he turns up alongside Natalie, you’ll never have any luck getting out before sunset. “I’ll call triple-A, and go get a coffee.” You rub your eyes, feeling tiredness building up as you force back tears.

“Are you doing okay?” David speaks softly, and you wish he were beside you now more than ever as you shake your head.

Clearing your throat, you lick your lips as you glance over to see several fans right by you, phones in hand as some wave and others converse. “I’ll be fine. I just need to get out of here.” You admit with a watery laugh, a sound that breaks David’s heart.

“Stay safe okay? I love you.” He looks up to see Natalie in his doorway, phone in hand with a frown on her lips.

“I love you too.” You reply with a small smile before hanging up, dialling for assistance whilst you turn the music up in the car, hoping to drown out the fans just for ten minutes.

Lowering his phone, David sighs. “What’s up, Nat?” David mumbles through his hands as he buries his face in them, hearing the rustling of Natalie sitting down on his bed.

“You might wanna see this.” She passes her phone across to him, and David can feel his heart sinking at the footage displayed on Natalie’s phone.

It’s a series of fans filming you whilst you’re sat in David’s Tesla, hand resting on your forehead as you try to block them out. He can hear them talking about you, making comments that boiled his blood.

“When was that posted?” David questions as Natalie takes her phone back.

“Ten minutes ago.” Natalie responds, and immediately David is on his feet. “David, you know it’s better to stay here.” Natalie follows after her best friend, tugging on his arm, but David pulls his arm back, carrying on.

“I can’t see her like this, struggling and alone with fans like that. You know how they can get.” David retorts, and Natalie simply nods. “You coming to help me or staying here?”

Sighing, Natalie slips her phone into her pocket. “Which car are we taking then?”

Pulling up down the road from you, David whistles at the sight of all the fans still around his Tesla. “And she’s inside?” Natalie pitches in, snapping David from his thoughts as he simply nods.

“Triple A is on their way, that much I know.” David sighs as Natalie turns the engine off, and as the car door opens on her side, some fans already catch on and run in their direction.

“Oh my god, it’s David and Natalie!” One girl screams, your ears perking up as you look through your rearview mirror, seeing the pair as they smile and wave to various fans.

Around you, the car is now clear and you let out a sigh of relief, sinking further into the seat.

Looking down at your phone, you can see a new text from David.

‘I’ll be over shortly, just sit tight baby. triple a are coming, nat will drive you home’

Reading the message felt like a wave of relief, the land of comfort won’t be too far off in your future. “Hey?” Turning your head, Natalie is stood by the passenger door, fans a few feet behind her as you unlock the door, allowing her to slide in.

“Hey, Nat.” You can’t help but chuckle at the situation, forgetting how often they all deal with this. “Just your average Tuesday, right?”

Natalie smiles, nodding along. “You wanna come home now?” She asks and you nod eagerly. “Come on then, David said he’ll stay put, chat to the fans til triple A arrive.”

Making your way out of the car, you keep your head down as you rush toward Natalie’s car, her hand in yours to guide you. “Y/n?” You pause as you reach the car, looking over your shoulder to see David smiling softly to you. 

No words are said as he simply nods, watching as you mirror the action before climbing into Natalie’s car and driving away.

Despite the fact you’d been dating Jeff for almost a year, your friends only found out about it within the past two months whilst fans learnt a matter of days ago along with the rest of the world. You were both in a bubble of naivety, a state of pure bliss where no one could affect you or how you felt. But since the world found out about you, things changed drastically before your very eyes.

“Come on, it’s a night out.” David whines to everyone, glancing over toward you and Jeff as you remain buried in his arms, half asleep. “It could be your guys’ big night?” David suggests.

“Maybe.” Jeff mumbles, looking down at you as you rub your eyes, letting out a small yawn. “How ‘bout it, Y/n?”

You shrug your shoulder lightly. “I mean, why not.” You comment, seeing David resist the urge to fist bump into the air. “Could be fun.” You say to Jeff, who smiles back at you before kissing your forehead sweetly.

Walking into the club, Jeff refuses to let go of your hand. “Precious cargo, alright.” He muttered to you before you got inside, causing you to roll your eyes as you caught a glimpse of David filming the softer side that not many see of Jeff.

Immediately, you found yourself being dragged to the dance floor with Carly and Natalie. You’re aware Jeff is around as he brings the occasional drink to you like he always would, but now he was able to dance with you the way he’d want to.

The night was a laugh, Jeff had to help you into the Uber back to yours with the help of Heath. “She’s just a bit drunk, she’ll sober up by 6am.” Jeff tells Heath as you’re sat in the back of the Uber, trying your best to sit upright with the seatbelt on.

As Jeff slides into the seat next to you, you limply fall into him. “You’re so pretty.” You chuckle, poking his cheek as the Uber driver smiles to herself, pulling away from the club and all of your friends to whom you remain oblivious to having left behind.

Arriving back at your house, Jeff picks you up bridal style as he unlocks your front door. “Come on you,” He groans as he begins to walk up the stairs with you in his arms. “you gotta sleep this off.”

Pouting to him, you shake your head. “I don’t want to.” You say adamantly.

“You’ve got that event tomorrow afternoon, baby.” He reminds you, and you can’t help but roll your eyes and lean your head back, hitting it against the railings. “Oh, that’s not good.” Jeff sighs as you remain quiet, oblivious to the pain rushing through the back of your head.

Eventually, after a lot of resisting, Jeff helps you to bed. As you curl up into the sheets, you look around frantically. “Jeff?” You call out, unable to see him in the darkness.

Jeff shakes his head as he wraps an arm around you, hearing you squeal until he mutters your name. “I’m right here, okay?” He whispers into your ear, feeling you ease into his embrace. “I love you, Y/n.” He admits, and you tense momentarily.

“You, you do?” You ask in disbelief and you pause as Jeff removes his arm from around you, leaning over and turning the lamp on so he can see you properly.

Squinting from the sudden light, you shuffle to face Jeff as he focuses on your features. His hand reaches out and rests on your cheek. “I really do, crazy, right?” He chuckles, and you can’t help but nod.

“If it helps, Jeff.” You start, moving closer toward him. “I love you too.”

Rubbing your temples, you nurse the bottle of water provided as you take your seat alongside Kristen. “How do you look so good after last night?” You question, seeing Kristen looking as if last night was a total breeze.

“Maybe because I didn’t do an entire bottle of Tequila shots?” She retorts with a small smile, nudging you playfully before the last few guests arrive. “Oh no,” Kristen mutters, looking across the room to see Cierra and a few others walk in.

“What?” You glance up at Kristen, quickly following her line of vision directed at none other than Jeff’s ex. “For fuck sake.” You groan internally, one thing that could worsen your hangover is an interaction with your boyfriend's ex.

“Welcome everyone, I’m glad you could all make it.” Averting your attention from Cierra’s way, you focus on the brand rep as she explains the new products in front of you.

As you listen, you can’t help but feel a pair of eyes burning into your head. “Just ignore her,” Kristen mutters, resting a hand on yours underneath the table and squeezes it lightly.

You remain composed, listening throughout and taking photos and Instagram stories until it’s appropriate to leave. “I need a fat coffee.” You joke to Kristen as you both head out of the building. 

“Hey, Y/n?” You roll your eyes before turning around, forcing a smile as Cierra walks over and gives you a hug, throwing you off slightly as she steps back. “So good to see you, how’s your head? I saw the stories from last night.”

“No complaints so far,” You laugh, but Cierra merely flashes a curt smile. “I didn’t know you were coming today, but it’s nice to see you.” You say, hoping the interaction will be short-lived and you can be on your way.

“Yeah, it was a last-minute thing. I saw that you and Jeff are official, congrats on locking down that wild one.” She laughs, and her friends join in whilst you and Kristen remain quiet.

“Well, not really hard to lock him down if we’re actually in love.” You comment, and Cierra’s smile drops.

She hums to herself before stepping closer. “Just be careful, alright? Guys like Jeff don’t end up with girls like you.” She mutters before stepping away and flashing that faux smile. “It was nice to see you guys!” She walks off after that, leaving you stood still in a stunned state.

“Everything okay?” Kristen asks, resting a hand on your arm.

Snapping out of your daze, you nod. “Now I definitely need a fat coffee.” You joke, uneasily as you walk back to your car, unable to shake Cierra’s comment from your thoughts.

Kristen leaves you at David’s house as she heads back home, leaving you alone with the weight of Cierra’s words and facing Jeff as you open the front door.

“Hey, Y/n? How was the event?” Jeff stands up after hearing David mention your name and walks over, wrapping you in his arms.

He looks down, seeing you keep a straight face, missing your usual smile. “You okay?” Jeff mutters to you, watching as you force a nod. “Let’s go outside, yeah?” Jeff guides you outside, without a chance for you to respond.

As the door closes behind you both, you exhale deeply as you still keep a tight grip on your almost empty bottle of water.

“What’s wrong, did I do something?” Jeff questions, watching as you collapse down onto the driveway.

“Cierra was at the event.” You speak up, unaware of the sudden surge of anger pumping through Jeff as your gaze remains fixated on your feet. “She erm, said some things.” You glance up, noting Jeff’s clenched fists and tightened jaw. 

“She said something to you?” Jeff repeats your words as you nod. “What did she say to you? Because she’s just jealous, you know that, right?” He paces around whilst you rub your face in your hands.

“She said guys like you don’t end up with girls like me.” You tell him, hearing it through her lips and the tone they provided. 

Jeff kneels down in front of you, his left hand resting on your thigh. “You don’t believe that, do you?” He asks, scanning your features as uncertainty crosses them and you shrug. “She’s just trying to mess with us, Y/n. Don’t let her win.” 

You sigh deeply. “I don’t want to believe her, Jeff. It’s just, it hurt. Like, we are different species of women, Cierra and I that is.” You explain. 

“I know, and that’s what I love about you. You’re the opposite of her.” Jeff interrupts. “Don’t let her words tear you down baby, you mean too much to me to let her ruin things.” 

“I’ll be fine.” You assure Jeff as you slowly stand up, Jeff helping you to your feet. “Just threw me off that’s all.” You wrap your arms around Jeff’s torso, resting your head against his chest. “Trust me, I’m not going anywhere any time soon.”

“Wait, lemme see it!” You chuckle as you reach over Carly, grabbing Jeff’s phone as he protests.

Leaning back, you scroll through the Tweets as you suppress your laugh. “It’s just an idea, alright. I’m not saying you have to.” Jeff mutters, seeing a smile creep across your lips.

“And why wouldn’t I? I mean, my hair is in need of TLC.” You admit, lifting the dead ends of your hair as Jeff focuses on your furrowed brows as you focus on your hair intently.

“You’re seriously willing to come on the show?” Jeff questions as you nod in response. “You’ve seen the show right, I’ve only ever done girls hair like twice.” He reminds you, noting the look you give to Carly.

“Those weren’t so bad.” You tell him sweetly, unaware of Jeff internally lighting up at your soft comment. “I’m not after much anyway, but if fans wanna see it I’m down.” You hold out his phone to him as he accepts it back, looking through the tweets once more.

“Go on Jeff, you’re in need of content.” Carly inputs with a small laugh and all Jeff can do is nod as he focuses back on you.

“Alright, how’s Thursday morning work for you?” He rises to his feet as you do, quickly seeing you lean forward and embrace him in a tight hug.

“Perfect, thanks, Jeff!” You smile brightly as you pull away from him and head out of the house. “See you guys later.” You call out as you close the door, leaving Jeff stood still as he remains stunned.

“You ever going to tell her?” Carly glances up as a blush crosses over Jeff’s cheeks.

Snapping out of his daze, Jeff clears his throat. “Maybe.” He mutters before sitting back down with a thud. “But maybe not.”

Walking up toward his apartment, you send a text to let him know you’re about to arrive.

As you reach out to knock on the door, it opens for you. “Hey, Jeff-” You start, but as you avert your gaze from your phone, Jonah stands before you with a weird smile across his face.

“Hey, Y/n. Come on in, Jeff’s just setting up.” He moves aside, allowing you to walk past as his eyes focus on your body, something that doesn’t go unnoticed by some of the crew.

Wandering through the set, some of the crew notice the sight of your smile growing as Jeff walks out. “Y/n, glad you made it.” Jeff tries to keep his composure, but something about you just makes him weak at the knees.

“Jonah let me in, I hope that’s okay.” You say as you glance over your shoulder to see Jonah a lot closer than you had anticipated. Turning back to face Jeff, you force a small smile as you tug on your sleeve in discomfort. “So, need any help setting up?”

Jeff looks around, seeing everything is ready to go. He takes a step back and moves to stand behind the barber's chair. “Ready when you are, dollface.” He jokes with a thick New York accent and instantly cringes whilst you laugh, unaware of the glare that’s caught on camera of Jonah.

As Jeff starts to film, you try to remain perfectly calm and remain focused on what Jeff is saying to you. However, Jonah’s lingering eyes aren’t helping the situation, especially as he glugs his coke in the background of the video.

“Jonah, dude can you not? I’m trying to film.” Jeff glares over at Jonah who lowers the drink from his lips, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand before sighing.

“I didn’t hear any complaints from Y/n.” He remarks, and your eyes widen as you look over, a curt laugh escaping your lips. “See? She thinks I’m funny.”

Lowering your eyes you mutter under your breath. “Not exactly.”

Jeff smiles to himself, having heard your comment before he carries on shooting. “Okay, so let’s just start on your hair I guess.” He lifts the ends up, allowing them to fall over your shoulders as he pulls out a chair and sits beside you.

You can feel his breath on your cheek as he leans in, snipping away at the ends. “So, Y/n.” He speaks up, hearing you hum in response. “How’d you get your start?”

“Okay, let’s take a ten-minute break. Just check the lights and the audio.” One of the crew speaks up, and you slide from the chair to your feet.

“Wanna water?” Jeff asks as his hand rests on your arm, brushing off as you nod.

As Jeff walks away, Jonah forces himself up from the armchair. “Nice cut,” Jonah speaks up and you lift your head up, locking your phone as you reply to a text.

“Oh, thanks.” You reply, looking down at the fresh trim. “Always causes a lotta mess though.” You joke uneasily as everyone around you remains busy.

Jonah looks down at your chest. “You’ve got some hair on your,” He reaches out toward your right boob and his fingers graze across it firmly.

“What the fuck, Jonah!” You speak up, louder than intended as you bat his hand away.

Upon hearing you, Jeff moves through his apartment and pushes Jonah aside. As he stands in front of you, he can see the evident disgust in your expression and his eyes harden onto Jonah.

“What did you do?” Jeff grits his teeth as he stands in front of you whilst keeping an eye on Jonah who merely giggles.

“She had some lose hair on her boob, I just went to brush it off.” Jonah shrugs his shoulders like it’s no big deal and looks around to see everyone mirroring one another with dirty gazes at him. “What?” He scoffs as Jeff clenches his fist.

“Jeff,” You mutter, resting your hand over his fist. “he’s not worth it, honestly.” Your voice rises and Jonah raises an eyebrow to you.

“Oh, I’m not worth it suddenly?” He retorts to you. “What was with the looks you were giving me earlier, laughing at my jokes?” He lists off, but you shake your head in disbelief.

“Jonah, I’ve never shown an interest in you. It’s called being polite.” You state bluntly, moving aside from Jeff.

“If that’s polite I’d hate to see friendly,” Jonah mutters under his breath, and this time you’re too slow to hold Jeff back from lunging at Jonah and tackling him to the armchair.

“Jeff!” You yell, but a member of the crew holds you back as Jeff pins Jonah down, his arm leaning against his neck.

“You ever talk to her like that again, I’ll fucking end you.” Jeff spits to Jonah, who simply nods. “I’m going to let you go, and you’re fucking leaving here alright.”

Moving his arm aside, Jonah rises to his feet and pulls on his shirt before heading toward the door without another word being said.

Remaining still, Jeff tries to calm down his breathing. “Jeff?” Your voice snaps him from his thoughts as he turns around to see you timidly stood. “Are you alright?” You ask quietly, resting your hand on his cheek.

Naturally, Jeff feels himself leaning into your embrace. “After all that, you’re asking if I’m okay?” He questions, seeing you nod in response.

“Well of course,” You tell him. “because I care about you.” The words roll off of your tongue with ease.

“Yeah, like friends.” Jeff shrugs a shoulder, trying to protect himself. But to his surprise, you shake your head as you lean in toward him.
