Patagonia is home to four penguin species, the Magellanic, Humboldt, Gentoo, and King penguins. Depending on the species and the season, the curious creatures can be seen anywhere from Punta Arenas to Tierra del Fuego on day trips to rocky hillside nests or boat landings in large colonies. Every year the Magellanic Penguins come to the shore of Argentinian Patagonia to nest, mate, incubate their eggs, feed their offspring, and prepare them for migration. The peninsula is essentially a 3-kilometer long and 600-meter wide rock formation, covered in sand, gravel, and clay. Here the penguins make their nests and later, in October, lay eggs. After November, when the chicks hatch, visiting the colony is especially a good idea since you can watch millions of penguins running around. For many families, dinner every Sunday with an Asado. The particular technique used for Asado differs by region, but also by the size of the gathering, which tools and fuels are available, and the preferences of the cook, or asador. For large gatherings, whole carcasses may be cooked for the al asador, meaning staked over coals or fire and cooked to perfection. Located in La Boca, the Caminito (little path, in Spanish) is a street museum comprising colorfully painted houses typical of the immigrant dwellings that came to characterize the port area towards the end of the 19th century. The Caminito followed the route of an old stream that once flowed into the Riachuelo, and later, after the river dried up, formed part of the route of a railroad. After the closure of the railroad, the street was abandoned, until in the 1950s, a group of neighbors decided to regenerate the area, and local artist Benito Quinquela Martín began using the buildings as a canvas. Today, there are several works by Argentine artists incorporated as part of the street museum and the Caminito has become a favorite with visitors to the city. Ushuaia is the main town of the island of Tierra del Fuego in Argentina and serves as an embarkation/disembarkation port for our Antarctic passengers. It was initially founded by British missionaries in 1870 as a refuge for the indigenous people of Tierra del Fuego, the Yámana. In Ushuaia, it is often cold and windy, and rain is possible. Temperatures can range between 40 and 50 F (5 - 10 C). There is only one pier in Ushuaia located in the main port on Maipu Street. The entrance to the pier is opposite Lasserre street, the Government building, and the Hotel Albatros. Passengers must be able to show their Boarding Pass; otherwise, access may be denied by port authorities. Argentina's second center for quality wine production, Cafayate is a popular tourist destination but still has a tranquil small-town feel. It's good-looking territory, with the green of the vines backed by soaring mountains beyond, and is one of northwest Argentina's most seductive destinations. Most travelers to Argentina head to Mendoza for their wine tasting but visiting bodegas around Cafayate is far easier as they're much closer together. A tour of the Quebrada de las Conchas is unmissable if you're in this part of the world. Its name translates as ‘Shell Ravine' due to the marine fossils embedded in the rock which was once the seabed. The porous sandstone has been sculpted over millennia by wind and rain creating a landscape of surreal formations. The Argentinian Lake is the source of the Santa Cruz River and the third largest lake in South America with a total surface of 1,560 km2. It is located 185 m above sea level. It is 60 km long and between 14 and 20 km wide. Its depth varies between 35 and 1,000 meters, but in the central part and on the Southern shore, it is 300 meters deep. The special color of the water is due to a very fine powder produced by glacial abrasion, called "glacial meltwater." Almost all nature-oriented activities are offered in the towns located in the Lake District. Visitors can go trekking, skiing, kayaking, rock climbing, and fishing. The flag of Argentina is a triband, composed of three equally full horizontal bands colored light blue and white with a yellow in the center. The flag is twice as wide as it is tall. This flag was adopted on February 12, 1812, four years before Argentina declared independence from Spain (1816). The "Sun of May" design was added to the flag in 1818. Manuel Belgrano, the leader of the Argentine revolution against Spain, chose the blue and white colors and represented the blue sky parting to reveal white clouds, as is said to have happened when the Liberation demonstration began in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on May 25, 1810.
