H1B & L1 Visa Travel to India: My Experience with Re-Entry, Stamping & Stress
I recently traveled to India while working in the U.S. on an H1B/L1 visa setup (and talking to friends in both categories made me realize how similar yet confusing the rules can be). What I thought would be a simple home trip turned into a deep dive into visa stamping, re-entry rules, and immigration documents.
Before leaving, I kept hearing about things like visa stamping validity, I-797 approval, and 221(g) delays. I initially assumed my approval notice alone would be enough to return—but quickly learned that re-entry depends heavily on having a valid visa stamp in your passport.
I also came across advance parole discussions, especially from friends going through the green card process, which added another layer of confusion. Even though I personally didn’t need it, it helped me understand how different immigration paths (H1B vs L1 vs green card stage) change travel requirements.
What helped me the most was getting my documents organized early—employment verification, pay stubs, passport validity, and approval notices. It reduced a lot of last-minute stress.
In the end, the trip went fine, but it changed how I look at international travel on work visas. It’s not just booking a flight—it’s understanding your immigration status before you leave.
