Warning: creepy men, a bit of obsessive/possessive Daemon, mention of murder, mention of prostitution
Summary: He needed to protect the object of his desire at all costs.
A/N: This was created for HotD Prompt Fest 2025 of @hotd-bigbang
Daemon Targaryen was a feared businessman and ruthless mobster. He had his empire in an iron grip, reigning over large parts of King's Landing, with many trade routes stretching over the exotic illegal markets of Essos and a few more Free Cities.
He was known as the Rogue Prince, a name that had stuck with him since his youth as he worked under his grandfatherâs reign.
He talked and walked as if he had descended from a royal house. He always had. Targaryens were above men, close to gods; his grandfather had often mumbled. For Daemon, it was a mantra. He was as close to the gods as any man beneath him.
He would bow down before no one, except one person: his wife. He would kneel before her, not out of weakness, but out of respect and love. She was the only one who could command his loyalty, the only one who could soften his hardened heart. For her, he would do anything, even if it meant going against his own nature.
She was his whole universeâthe sun he gravitated around. She was the blood in his veins, the ever-beating heart of his heart. She was the colour through which he saw the world. Not only that, but she was the melody of his life. She was his everything.
And he would do anything for herâcommit the most heinous crimes a man could inflict on humanity, burn down cities. She was his everything. As a loyal hound would show his master, he would show her his devotion. He would go to every length just to see her approve.
But it wasnât always like that. No. Daemon Targaryen was, and still is, a rough crime lord. But in private, he was as soft as a kittenâor so his wife teased him. And he liked it. She was the only one who received such softness from him.
The light of his life. The love of his life. His Persephone to his Hades. The mother of his precious children.
She was his everything. He was darkness, and she was his light.
It was a typical Friday night for Daemon. Business meetings here, a new deal there, looking at the goods at the docks, shooting a rival in the head. A normal Friday.
But throughout the day, Daemon felt off. Nothing pleased him. Not even the begging of a business partner he executed this morning satisfied him all that much.
He grew numb. Too numb for his own liking.
He had a great responsibility. A whole empire lay in the palm of his hand. An empire he had built from the ruins of his brotherâs neglect.
Viserys had been too weak, too kind-hearted to ever rule the crime business as he did. Ever since he was a child, Daemon had known the world he was born into was dangerous and bloody, full of greed and power-hungry people. You had to be ruthless, cunning, and greedy to survive. Viserys had never been a strong leader. He was too soft, too pliable. A pushover.
But Daemon gave credit where credit was due. Viserys knew how to launder money wellâso well that Daemon never needed to borrow money from allies. The money Viserys left was enough to fix every crack in the pristine Targaryen crime empire.
He sat in his penthouse, one hand resting on the armrest of an armchair in his living room while the other lazily petted the head of his most loyal companion, Caraxes. His Doberman, as proud a hound as Daemon was.
The dog had his eyes closed, enjoying his owner's caress, sitting upright and pushing his head further into his hand. Daemon chuckled under his breath at his dogâs antics.
He stared out of the floor-to-ceiling window, sighing softly. His eyes darted around the grey skyline of Kingâs Landing. The only thing missing now would be the rotting smell of the city to make me more miserable, Daemon thought.
His numbness wasnât even boredom. He didnât know where it came from. If he was bored, he would go to his private shooting range, torture someone, go to the gym, or visit his speakeasy, The Red Dragon. Maybe call for a woman to warm his bed.
But nothing sparked any kind of joy. Still, Daemon rose from his seat. Caraxes looked up at him, watching his master take his suit jacket and leave the flat. A low whine escaped the Doberman as he was left behind, feeling his owner's emptiness too.
She was a nobody. Her entire life consisted of surviving.
She was born into poverty, never knowing the luxury of choosing between a warm meal, new clothes, or a book for school. Her mother had worked three jobs to ensure she had the bare minimum to live on. She
All her life, she dreamed of nothing more than living a normal and simple lifeâhaving a good-paying job, a nice flat, or even a small house. But for her dreams, she needed a higher education. The cost of education was a high price to pay. She had only earned a high school degree. College was never in the picture. The costs were so horrendously high, she would have had to work five jobs to get through the first semester and still be in debt for the rest of her life.
Life as a waitress was not her dream, much less working in a very short waitress uniform. But the pay was decent, and she could afford to buy food and pay rent in the same month.
She was running late again. With her apron clutched tightly in her hand, she tried to maneuver through the crowds of office workers on their way to various meetings or coffees.
The bell above the dinerâs door rang, signaling her entry.
âYouâre late again!â growled her boss from the kitchen window. She ran past him with an apologetic smile, stamping in for the day before rushing into the locker room.
She put her things in the small cabinet with her name on it. Then she slipped into her waitress uniformâa short black skirt reaching to her mid-thighs, a white blouse, and a white apron. She tied her hair back as best she could. The diner always ran hot regardless of the season.
She walked outside, picking up her notepad, and sighed as her eyes roamed the people sitting around. Greasy-looking men came in and out, trying to touch her, demanding impossible things, and leaving lousy tips. All she could do was smile and be nice, even when she wanted to slap and curse at them. But she couldnât, or she would be fired. The customer is king, her boss's words rang in her mind.
With her pad in hand and a tray under her arm, she moved through the sitting area to serve her table. She sighed at herself, weaving through rows of tables, trying not to bump into corners and hurt herselfâa task she often failed at.
Day in, day out, she had to do this work to keep her flat and pay for groceries. Better than sleeping on the streets, she thought with a subtle shudder as she moved to a table in her area. She had been there once.
A lot of construction workers sat in the diner, leering at her as if she were just a piece of meat. She tried to pull her skirt further down, but the garment was already at its limits. Bad enough it rode up while she walked around.
As she wrote down the order of a customer, the bell above the door rang. Loud, giggling and high pitched laughter filled the diner. Five women stumbled in and sat down at a table.
They worked in the luxury nightclub across the street. The five women had become regulars over time, either coming in for breakfast or dinner depending on her shift.
They were nice to her, giving generous tips, asking how she was, keeping her away from the leering men, and making her day a bit more bearable.
She walked up to them, smiling as she spotted new and familiar faces. But before she could take their orders, a well-dressed man entered the restaurant in a flurish. He radiated power, wealth, and danger.
His white hair was gelled back. Black leather boots clicked with every step he took. His red button-up shirt was tucked into finely tailored black slacks. A silver watch gleamed on his wrist. A ring on his little finger bore some kind of dragon crest.
His eyes scanned the room before stopping on her. He froze, taking her in. His eyes took her slowly in. But his gaze didnât linger like she was used to from the other patrons.
âCoffee, black. No sugar. To go.â His voice was low and smooth. He walked to the womenâs table.
âLadies, Iâm sorry, but youâll have to take your lunch to go. Thereâs been a business issue.â His voice was strainedâhurried even. Like he was under a lot of pressure.
The group of women groaned but nodded. One by one, they ordered their food to go.
She watched them file out one by one after she brought them their food. The last person to leave was the mysterious man.
âYou made the coffee?â he asked, turning around with his hand on the door handle. He was holding up the paper cup filled with the bitter language.
She could only nod.
âItâs good. Strong, even. Maybe Iâll visit this joint again.â He flashed her a crooked smirk before leaving.
And so, she met the most fearsome man in the city.
As he said, he began to visit regularly. Only ever ordering a black coffee and the latest newspapers. Leaving her alone until he needed a refill.
She liked him. When he was around, all the other men behaved differently.
âHereâs your coffee. Black, no sugar. And todayâs news.â She smiled as she set both in front of him on the table.
He looked up from his phone. âYou are an angel,â he hummed. Her cheeks heated up. âDo you want anything else? We have freshly baked pies.â She mumbled, fiddling with her pen.
He shook his head. âNah, just what you brought me. Thanks, Angel.â
Her cheeks were now burning from his compliment. Quickly, she scurried away, refilling drinks and taking orders. Trying to distract herself from the handsome stranger.
He liked sitting in the diner across from his club. It was quiet, and the coffee was good. But he realised quickly the coffee was only good when she made it. When someone else brewed it, it tasted burned.
But everything was sweeter when she was thereâthe beautiful waitress with that thousand-megawatt smile.
Always so kind. Her presence soothed him. His emptiness disappeared when she was around.
He watched her from his usual table, the first one right next to the entrance, by the large window.
Her smile was tense, fake. He had noticed long ago that her politeness was an act. No wonder, he thought. The guys she had to serve were even worse than the patrons in his own club.
So he figured out her shifts and sat in the diner, staring down the creeps.
He couldnât kill them, sadly. He was too afraid it would frighten her and push her away. So he plotted, and after they left, his men would corner anyone who mistreated herâthreatening, beating, sometimes worse things. But only if the guy was a serious creep. But never killing.
He wanted to protect her, in his own twisted way. Maybe he was falling for her. Daemon didnât want to admit it. He put it off as an obsession with something he couldnât have.
She was walking home from a late shift at the diner when a car slowed down next to her.
âCan I take you home?â It was the guy who always sat at the corner table in the diner.
She stopped walking. He stopped driving too. She stared at him through the open passenger window. Her heart was beating fast. He stared back at her with one of those roguish smirks.
She felt like a deer caught in headlights. Her head screamed no, but her stomach told her she could trust him.
And so, she stepped into the car of the most dangerous man in all Westeros.
The car was silent for a while, but Daemon wanted to get to know his little waitress better. âIâm sorry, I never introduced myself. Iâm Daemon.â He grinned softly, his eyes darting toward her.
His lips stretched into a large smirk as she introduced herself. âBeautiful,â he mumbled under his breath.
She had given him her address. One look on his GPS and his melancholy slowly began to grow back. His heart dropped as they drove closer to her flat complex.
âWill you make your lemon pie again at your next shift?â He heard her giggle softly.
âOnly if you order it,â she quipped, her eyes darting over to him.
 He grinned.
âIâm not much of a sweet tooth. I like the taste of bitter and sharp things. But your pie is a perfect blend of sour and sweet. Much like a whiskey sour.â
She laughed heartily.
âMaybe Iâll bake a small pie only for you. Iâm not allowed to bake big pies if they arenât being sold.â
Daemon huffed, rolling his eyes. âThen work as my personal pastry chef. I wonât restrict you,â he mumbled.
The car was suddenly silent. His heart was pounding. What the hell did you just offer?! His inner voice was screaming and pulling their hair. But he had to keep his cool.
As he stopped in front of her flat, he saw her shocked face.
âWhat?â he mumbled, his brows arched. Sounding nonchalant even though he was far gone from it.
âDid you just offer me a job?â She turned fully to him.
He shrugged. âCan you cook as well as you bake? I am in need of a new chef anyway. Do you want the job?â

Notes: Massive thank you to everyone who's supported this story!đ
You start to grow nervous waiting on the carriage arriving from Winterfell. After waking up earlier than normal, you skipped breaking fast and went straight to the courtyard to wait on your children, your heart beating rapidly with excitement at the thought of seeing them so soon. The maester was supposed to change the bandage on your hand first thing, but this was too important; you didnât want to miss such an important moment.
âI hope nothing has happened. It is a long journey.â
Jace tightens his grip around your waist. âDaemon is out flying on Caraxes, to make sure nothing happens. If something was wrong, we would know by now.â
Turning your head back, you look up at him and say, âI know youâre right, but I canât stop worrying.â
âAll your fears will settle once you see them.â Jace smiles and presses a kiss on your cheek. âI donât know who will be more excited to see usâour children or Clara. She will need a few moons to recoverâLyarra!â
The gates to the courtyard open, and a carriage with a banner of House Stark comes into view. Hand in hand, you and Jacaerys run down the steps to greet them.
âMy babies!â You smile so much that it starts to hurt your cheek. Bliss was the only word to describe how you felt. âOh, my love's are finally home.â
The carriage stops just before the steps, and as soon as the door is open, Avery and Aethan burst out, and Jacaerys picks them both up. You kiss the backs of their heads.
âMother! Kepa!â
Before Aemma can even step foot on the ground, you pull her into a hug and say, "My girl, my sweet girl.â You hold out your other hand for Rhaenys to take. âItâs okay, my darling.â
Looking behind her, Rhaenys reaches her hand out to touch something and says, "Come on, pup.â She jumps out and comes towards you, as does a direwolf pup. She cuddles into your side, âmummy.â
Jace places your sons back down to go to the carriage to receive your babe from Clara.
Tears sting your eyes when your sonâs hold onto your skirts. The noose you felt around your neck had loosened since Aegonâs demise, but you never felt completely free of it until now. All you needed was for your five children to be at home, and your world should feel whole again.
âWhere is Prince Daemon?â Jace asks; his eyes are trained on the handmaidenâs empty arms. âWhere is our son?â
For a split second, you fear the worst until you see an unfamiliar young handmaiden appear from the opposite side of the carriage with your babe sleeping in her arms. âThe lady of Winterfell kindly allowed one of her handmaidens, Lady Mormont, to assist me in bringing the children back.â
Tears of relief swell in your husband's eyes. He takes Daemon from her and holds him close, kissing the crown of his head. You would have the chance to hold your babe soon enough, but for now, you were content seeing him in his father's arms.
Quietly, you ask, âIâm presuming she is trustworthy.â
âI would not allow her near them if I didnât believe so.â
You catch Jacaerys eye, and the two of you share a look and smile.
â
Lightly rocking your babe you watch as his brown eyes start to close over. His belly was full from feeding, so he would be settled for a couple of hours. His dark hair was starting to curl, closely resembling his fatherâs. He was truly beautiful.
âOw!â
âBoys, be more gentle with your toys,â you say softly.
You feel the warmth from the fireplace against your back as you sit cross-legged on the floor, facing the rest of your children. Avery and Aethan were playing with their toys, wooden horses, and dragons. Rhaenys was curled up beside her pup, which, according to Clara, Lord Stark gave her as a gift since the pup followed your daughter everywhere. Aemma tried to fight sleep but has fallen asleep on your bed.
The excitement of being reunited with you and Jace, seeing their new rooms, and trying to comprehend their grandmother now being the queen was exhausting for your children.
âIt is rude to stare, my love.â
âIâm only admiring,â Jace chuckles.
He had entered the room silently moments ago, but you had felt Jacaerys watching closely, taking everything in. He sits beside his sons on the floor, and Aethan hands him a toy and says, âThank you.â Jace inspects the miniature dragon in his hands and asks, âWhat is this one called?â
âArrax. It looks like Uncle Lukeâs dragon.â
Jaceâs eyes are full of tears; he ruffles the boy's hair. âThat it does, son, that it does.â
It was hard coming to terms with all the deaths and betrayals your family has suffered, but you prayed time would help. The wounds of losing two brothers would never completely heal, but hopefully it would hurt to speak about them one day.
Five moons later
âIâve written to Lord Stark, like we spoke of. He and his son Rickon will be our guests of honor in Dragonstone.â
Jace tilts his head, waiting for you to continue. He was sitting across the table from you while breaking fast with your children. âDragonstone?â
âWe are the prince and princess of Dragonstone; what better place to host them than our own castle? I spoke to her grace, and she wants to throw a grand feast to thank Lord Stark and his army for their support.â
He swallows down the food in his mouth while nodding in agreement. âPerhaps once things have settled and the realm has healed, we should return. Itâs only a short distance on dragonback; we could still do our duties and spend time with our mother, Daemon, and brother while learning how to rule in our own name.â
âI think itâs a brilliant idea.â You smiled. Jace had a point. As much as you loved watching your mother become queen, you had started to miss the island you called home.
âMummy.â
Feeling Avery tug on your nightgown, you help him sit on your lap. Unlike his other siblings, who all settled into their new routines and lived in the keep, your sweet boy had only clung to you and spent most nights crying until he was in bed beside you and Jacaerys. Avery reaches his small hand out and takes a piece of fruit from your plate, then rests his head against your chest.
Jace leans over and strokes his silver hair. âWhat do you think, my boy? Should we return to Dragonstone soon?â
Seeing the way your sonâs face lightens up at the mention of returning home was all the confirmation you needed to know it was the right thing to do.
â
The library was empty aside from yourself and Jacaerys, although he hadnât noticed you yet. After spending the morning in the training yard while Daemon continues to teach you, Rhaena, and Baela basic swordsmanship, you went looking for Jacaerys. There was no queen council being held until later in the day; your older children were attending their lessons, and your babe asleep with a stomach full of milk.
Jace jumps when you sneak up behind him, placing your hands on his waist. âYou are a sneaky thing,â he laughs. âHow did training with Daemon go?â
âFine,â you say, pressing a kiss to the back of his neck. âItâs been a while since I had you alone, dear husband.â
âLyarra,â his breath stutters when he feels your hand rubbing over his clothed cock. âYou will be the death of me. Please, donât tease.â
âDo you want me to stop?â
Jace turns his head around, grips your face, and presses his lips against your own. âGods, no.â
Grinning, you untie his breeches, then fall to your knees, freeing his cock as you did.
You take Jaceâs hardness into your mouth; your tongue swirls over the tip of his penis, then you start to bob your head back and forth as you suck and lick him. Tears roll down your cheeks when you gag, feeling his cock start to jolt in your mouth. It had been a while since you were intimate, and the last time Jace was focused on your pleasure, and it doesnât take him long to come undone. He moans loudly while spilling his seed into your mouth.
You wipe away the saliva from your mouth and stand back up, just as Jacaerys fixes his breeches. He pulls you into his embrace and kisses the side of your neck. He whispers, âMy love, I need to confess something to you.â
âWhat?â
âIâve fantasized about taking you in many different ways in Dragonstone. The council room, the gardens, the great hallâŠâ Jace holds you closer to him. âAnd when we return, I intend to do just that.â
The thought of Jace bending you over the table in the great hall causes heat to pool between your legs. Giggling, you shake your head and say, âWell, your fantasy will be a reality soon enough.â
âCome, let us go back to our chambers. Iâll have a bath drawn for us.â
Two years later
âIs it true Alicent has died?"
Clara nods and explains further while braiding your hair. âThe winter fever took her, princess. The maester had her confined to a secluded room in OldTown when she started showing signs. They say that in her final days, she began asking to see her sons and daughter again.â
You had no love for Alicent; she was the bitch who made your mother's life as awful as she did yours. But you also had no room for hatred or ill-will in your heart. Now that Alicent was at peace, perhaps she was reunited with her family. You twirled the rings on your fingers; the reminder of outliving a child was painful. Aemma has already declared that if she is to have a son, he will be named Rhaegar.
âThatâsâŠsad. How did you hear about this so soon?â
Her cheeks reddened slightly. âMy friendâwho currently serves as a handmaiden in OldTown mentioned it in her last letter to me.â
Her friend was the same handmaiden who traveled back with her from Winterfell, a pretty Northern girl with copper hair. You were more than certain the ladies were closer than most friends, but to avoid rumors spreading, they stopped visiting one another as frequently. âPrincess Aemma will be in need of her own lady-in-waiting soon,â you point out. âPerhaps Lady Mormont would want the position as she is familiar with my children.â
Clara smiles and nods her head. âI shall say to her. Thatâs the braiding-finished princess.â
âThank youââ Youâre cut off when you hear fast-paced footsteps entering your room. The door to your chambers is opened, and Rhaenys runs excitedly. Her hair was styled identically to the way you wore it most days. âReni, what have I told you about running in the halls?â
The walls outside your chambers were decorated with dragon statues. As a girl, you bumped into the solid objects many times and knew how painful it could be.
âSorry, mother,â she says as she steps in front of you and twirls. âDo you like it?â
The dress Rhaenys was wearing was the first one she had designed for herself. The gown was olive green with pale orange ribbons and embroidery on it. The smile on Jacaerys face when he saw the dress with colors identical to his own dragon was priceless; he almost became teary-eyed.
âYou look beautiful, my girl.â
When Clara finishes the last touches to your outfit, you hold your hand out for your daughter to take.
It was Avery and Aethanâs name day, and a small celebration was being held in the great hall. A ship with Daemon, your siblings, and Lord Corlys arrived the night before. Princess Jaehaera and Prince Maelor would be present as well; both children inherited their gentle nature from their mother.
Her grace, the queen, had flown to Dragonstone Syrax a few days prior. The longest you had gone without seeing her was a week. Even living apart you had remained extremely close.
Four years later
Hearing your agonizing screams of pain, Jacaerys barges into your shared martial chambers. The maester and midwives kept assuring him that nothing was wrong and he should remain waiting outside, but he could take it no longer. You are thankful this labor was quicker than the last; your water had only broken the night prior, and now that the sun is rising again, you are only a few pushes away from the pain being over.
âJacaerys!â
He comes to your side and takes hold of your hand. âIâm here, Iâm here!â
âIt fucking hurts!â You sob, âIt hurts so much.â
âThe pain will be over soon,â he says, planting a kiss on your sweaty forehead. âAnd youâll have the babe in your arms.â
âOne more push,â the midwife orders.
Screaming, you use all your remaining strength to bring another child into the world. Holding out your arms, desperate to hold your newborn for the first time. The seconds it takes for the midwife to wrap the babe in a blanket feel like it's never ending.
âA strong boy, kicking like a goat.â
Tears roll down Jaceâs cheeks as he watches the babe finally be placed in your arms. âIâm proud of you, Lyarra.â
âMy sweet boy,â you say, taking in the newborn's appearance. He has typical Targaryen features aside from his dark hair, like his fathers. âHeâs so tiny and perfect.â
â
After your handmaidens help you change into a fresh gown and the bedding is changed, Jacaerys assists you over to the chairs by the fireplace in your chambers. You take his arm before sitting down.
âI donât believe Iâve seen her grace this delighted in a long time,â Clara, who had followed closely behind, âAs are the children, they are keen to meet the newest prince to grace us in Dragonstone.â
Since the day the maester confirmed your pregnancy, your mother and Daemon have been overjoyed with excitement. Rhaena was expecting her first child within the next moon, so it only added to the joy of knowing you got to bond over experiencing being with child at the same time.
Jacaerys opens the door for your mother to enter the room, and he and Daemon go to inform your children and siblings that itâs a boy before bringing them through to be introduced to him. âLyarra, my sweet,â your mother says, walking over to you with tears in her eyes. âThe gods have been kind and granted you another beautiful babe, have you thought of a name yet?â
âNo, not yet,â you say, lifting your gaze from the babe to meet hers. âCan you stay longer than a few days this time?â
She brushes fallen hair out of your eyes and says, âI will stay however long you want me, my love. If Iâm needed at court, I can go on Syrax, then come back.â
You rest your head on her shoulder when she sits beside you and says, âThank you.â
âYou are my daughter; Iâll always be here for you.â
â
Hearing footsteps, Jacacerys looks up from the book in his hands, smiling when he sees you walking towards him. The room is almost in complete darkness, aside from a few candles and the moonlight.
âItâs late; you should be resting.â
âAs should you, my prince.â
Jace puts the book down and offers you his hand to help guide you down onto the chair beside him. He kisses the back of your scarred hand. âI swear by the faith of the seven, you are the most beautiful human Iâve ever seen.â
âStop,â you blush. âItâs a sin to lie, husband.â
âI speak only the truth,â he says. âHow are you feeling?â
The day had been overwhelming, to say the least. It was hard to believe your son was almost a day old and was still yet to be named. âIâm exhausted, but I reckon the babe will wake up for a feed soon.â You cuddle into Jaceâs side and say, âIâve thought of a good name, one of great honor.â
âWhat is it?â
âJacaerys.â
Jace plants a kiss on the crown of your head and says, âI love you, now and forever.â
Hello. I stumbled across your fic "Violent Delights." I don't know how this happened, but I am glad I did because I am dying to know if there are any plans for part 3??
Hello darling âșïž âViolent Delightsâ is actually a small series. I didnât intend for it to turn into a longer story, but Mackenyuâs Enishi really plagues my thoughts daily.
Iâve been working on and off on part 3 and have the rest of the story flushed out in my journal. It just takes me a little long to work on the chapters because Enishi is mostly filth (sorry not sorry) and I think Iâm a terrible smut writer đ so please bear with me lol.
Iâm so glad you somehow stumbled upon my fic! Thank you so much for taking the time to message me đ€ I really appreciate it! Much love!

All that could be heard was the shudder of my quickened breaths, not even a word coming from Edwardâs mouth or even the drunken men who just stared in what was perhaps confusion? Maybe fear? Just moments ago, I could read them almost instantly. Hunger was what I felt from them. The absolute need for control. It sickened me.
I wasnât sure what Edward had done, but the boys backed up and Edward made his way back into the car. I hurried and put my seatbelt on before he revved the engine and pulled forward. I couldnât help but gasp as the men fell over as they backed away. Then he backed up swiftly, making the sharpest turn around that swished my insides. Even then, I still felt the safest Iâve ever been.
He raced down past the building and pulled onto the street, not even stopping at the sign or even waiting for someone to let him in. Honks blared past him, but not one flinch. As he raced down the street, I took the time to study him. His jaw was clenched, his hands gripped the wheel, his expression was full of fury; it looked as if he wasnât even breathing at all.
âAre you okay?â I asked, my voice squeaked. I winced hearing my voice coming out so frail.Â
âNo.â He was fuming.
I was surprised when heâd made a complete stop at the side of the road. I didnât realize Iâd been looking at him the whole time when he finally stopped to look towards me, not even reaching my eye.
âY/N?â he asked as softly as he could, although I could still hear the strains of anger.
âYeah?â
âAre you all right?â His eyes met mine for a split second.
âIâI think soâŠâ I donât think I was. I was too shocked by it all.
âDo you think you can distract me?â he just about pleaded.
From just looking at him, I didnât need to question his need for a diversion. But, what was there to say? The days without him had left me in a heap of depression and utter sense of boredom at school. I racked my brain of anything that seemed amusing, scratching out my search for vampires and the constant dreams I had of him that left me a sweating mess on my sheets.
âTyler Crowleyâheâum kept telling everyone he was taking me to prom? I think? I donât really remember, I kinda tuned it outâŠâ I admitted. I shouldâve been more angry about it, but the absence of Edward had hit me a lot harder.
âI heard about that.â He seemed to be controlling his breaths.
âReally? Was I the last one to hear about this?â I tried to lighten the mood, it seemed to work when I was rewarded a slight chuckle. âIf he thinks taking me to prom is making up for almost killing me, then Iâll just run him over with my car and make it even.â
I saw his mouth twitch a bit with my remark, almost forcing itself not to crack a smile. I decided to speak up again. âWhatâs wrong?â
âMy temper. Sometimes it gets out of control.â He was whispering, ashamed of what he couldnât control. âItâs taking everything in me not to turn around and hunt those animals. The vile, repulsive things they were thinkingâŠâÂ
I know. I didnât dare speak that aloud. I felt like I was losing my mind. Could he too hear their thoughts or were they as clear as day?
âIt wouldnât help to turn around and do it⊠or even run them over⊠At least thatâs what Iâm trying to convince myself.â
A part of me wished that he would⊠hunt them down. The part of me that was completely exposed. The one that was forced to hear their thoughts. Unless Iâd imagined it⊠but it wouldnât have been too far off from reality.
âJessica and Angela,â I broke the brief silence, realizing that it had been at least 20 minutes since Iâd last contacted them. âI was supposed to meet them, theyâre probably worried...â
Without another word, he started the engine. Yet again, racing through the streets in a blur. He parallel parked in a spot with ease, right in front of La Bella Italia. My eyebrows furrowed. From the time Iâd told him about meeting the girls to our arrival at the restaurant, I never mentioned the location once.
In my swift time of thought, heâd already been opening my door.
âWhatâre you doing?â I asked him.
âIâm taking you to dinner,â he said as if it was so plainly obvious.Â
I fumbled with my seatbelt as my mind raced about as fast as Edwardâs driving. Finally, I stepped out.
Just as we were entering, Jessica and Angela walked out, the both of them sighing with relief. Right as they were about to speak, they noticed the brooding, tall man beside me and their worried looks had faded, instead replaced with a red tint in their cheeks.
âSorry I kept Y/N from dinner. We ran into each other and got talking.â Edward was the one to speak first. I was grateful. I couldnât even bear to tell them what happened, at least not yet, I didnât want to worry them.Â
âWe understand, yeah!â Jessica was completely flustered along with Angela.
âWould it be all right if I joined you?â he asked. He had a way with people, one that left them absolutely breathless. The girls were left in stutters.
âUm! Y-yeah sure!â Jessica breathed. Edward smirked.
âUm, actually, Y/N, we already ate while we were waiting â sorry," Angela confessed.Â
âThatâs okay! Iâm not really that hungry anyways.â I shrugged. With all the nerves with Edward here, I wasnât sure if I would even be able to stomach anything.
âI really think you should eat something,â Edward said in a low voice, leaning down to speak into my ear. I looked up at him, trying to cover up the fact that I was in complete awe. I simply nodded back at him as if I was in a trance.
âSure, yeah.â I tried to say as composed as possible.Â
He looked back to the two girls, then spoke, âDo you mind if I drive Y/N home tonight? That way the two of you arenât left waiting.â
Jessica and Angela looked to me for an answer. I gave them a nod with a smile. This was exactly what I needed. A night to finally ask all of my unanswered questions from my brooding savior.
âYeah! Not a problem! See you tomorrow, Y/N/N,â Jessica chirped.
âBye Y/N,â Angela leaned in for a hug. âAnd Edward, thanks for staying and taking her home.â She smiled at him. He responded back with a tight, but genuine smile.
Once they left, Edward guided me towards the entrance, holding the door open for me. My heart skipped a beat. I walked through the door, immediately being greeted by a host. Actually, only Edward was greeted by the host. Just from the look in her eyes, I knew she was instantly enamored by his presence, a feeling that was all too familiar with practically anyone that laid their eyes on him.Â
As she spoke, she never broke eye contact with him, not once looking towards me. I hated that it bothered me. The way she smiled at him, giggling at him once he spoke â it made me feel small.
âA table for two?â Her eye contact was still left unbroken, but when I looked towards Edward, his eyes were only on me. My breath trembled.
When she led us to a larger table, one that was meant for four, Edward spoke up, âPerhaps something more private?â He asked the host with a quick glance towards her before slyly pulling out a tip for her. Then his eyes were back on me.Â
âSure,â she said alluringly, still trying to catch Edwardâs undivided attention. She led us over to the quieter area of the restaurant, with a ring of small booths lined up. âHowâs this?âÂ
âPerfect.â He flashed a smile at her, one that had absolutely left her awed.
âUm-â she stuttered, âyour server will be right out.â She walked away, still making glances back towards Edward.
âWow.â That was all that I could possibly utter after that interaction.
âWhat?â
âYou really shouldnât do that to people.â I finally found my voice. âItâs hardly fair.â
âDo what?â
âDazzle them like that.â I couldnât possibly think of a word more fitting. âSheâs probably hyperventilating in the kitchen right now.â
His eyebrows furrowed, which surprised me. Did he really not notice this effect he has on people?
âI dazzle people?â His head tilted to one side, his eyes full of curiosity.
âOh, come on.â I giggled. âDo you really think everyone gets their way so easily?â
He ignored my question completely. âDo I dazzle you?â
I froze for a moment before asking, âWhat do you think?â
âNow thatâs the real questionâŠâ He mumbled. He looked frustrated.
Thankfully, before I could even form a response, our server arrived, her eyes gleaming. Once again, another woman dazzled by just the mere presence of Edward Cullen.
âHi. My nameâs Amber and Iâll be your server tonight. What can I get you to drink?â She only looked at Edward and I noticed that his eyes, again, were on me.
âA Coke.â I said rather bland to the server.
âTwo Cokes,â he said.
âIâll be right back with that.â She shot him another smile, one that was completely unnecessary as his eyes still remained on me.
âHow are you feeling?â he asked.
âFine?â Iâd completely forgotten about the reason why he was here with me in the first place. I hated that. The way that every thought bolted out of my mind when it came to him, it was quite frustrating.
âYouâre not a little shaken up? Dizzy, sick, coldâŠ?â
I couldnât help but chuckle. âNo, Iâve always been pretty good at repressing unpleasant things.â And he was far from that.
He nodded. âWell, Iâll feel better once you have something in your system.â
Just after that, the server came back with our drinks and a basket of breadsticks. To make him feel better, I grabbed one to nibble on.
âAre you ready to order?â she asked Edward, her back facing me.
âY/N?â he asked. She looked back at me uninterested. I tried my hardest to swallow my tongue.
I glanced at the menu, picking the first thing that my eyes fell to. âIâll have the Fettuccine Alfredo.â
âAnd you?â She turned back to him with a smile.
âNothing for me.â I knew it.
The server gave him a coy smile. âJust let me know if you change your mind.â
He pushed my drink towards me, nodding at it for me to drink. The waiter left disappointed.
Once the glass was in front of me, I sipped on it, forgetting how dehydrated I actually was. In under a minute, the soda was gone and embarrassingly enough, I was still thirsty.
I saw him push the other coke towards me. I gave him a smile, deciding to take small sips from it.
âCold?â He asked.Â
I felt a shiver down my spine and this time it wasnât from Edward, but from the Coke that Iâd chugged and the one that I was currently sipping on.Â
Before I could even nod, he shrugged off his gray coat, one that looked a little too nice for a teenage boy. Underneath, he wore a casual dark blue button down with the two buttons loose to reveal a dark gray undershirt.
Once he handed me his coat, I was broken from my trance. I slid my arm into his coat, oddly, it was cold, almost as if Iâd left it in my car that was drowning in snow from the night before. But in just seconds, the coat had warmed to my touch. Once it was on, I pushed back the sleeves as they were far too long on meâŠ
âYou sure you're alright? Normally a person wouldâve gone into shock.â He pushed the breadsticks in front of me and I gladly served myself another.
Why was that? I couldnât really make out a sane answer as to why my reaction didnât amount to one of a normal person. There was truly only one answer. Him.
âI feel safe with you,â I confessed.Â
His head went down, his eyes to the floor with a furrowed brow.
âIâm not⊠good for you.â He shook his head, his eyes still facing the ground.
âYour eyes are black again.â I saw his expression change, he looked back up at me, his eyebrows furrowed yet again, but this time in a state of confusion rather than disappointment. âI noticed your moods change according to your eye color, itâs quite interesting actually. One of my new theories.â
âSo thereâs more theories?â He had a faint smile and I could sense that he was a bit intrigued.
âWell Iâm not gonna force it out of you. Just makes me feel a bit more sane.â He nodded at my response, his smile peeking a bit more in the corners of his mouth.Â
âAnd what are these new theories?â
When the waitress came over, we both realized how close we were sitting and immediately straightened out. She set the dish in front of me and then turned to Edward.
âDid you change your mind? Isnât there anything I can get you?â she asked him.Â
âNo, thank you.â Then gestured towards me.Â
I looked around at the table, realizing Iâd already finished the second coke. âMaybe just some water.â I gave her a tight smile.
She nodded, only smiling at Edward, then took the empty glasses off the table and walked off.
âSo, those theories?â He moved closer to me.
âIâll tell you later in the car. Only if I can ask you a few questions.â
âDone,â he said immediately, I was a bit surprised.
âWhy are you here?â I started.
âTo have dinner with you,â he said as if it were obvious.
âNo, I mean Port Angeles. Itâs an hour drive â you knew I was here.â
âNext.â
âCâmon, I gotta have at least some answers if you wonât tell me the big one.â
âNext,â he repeated.
I tried hard to not look as frustrated as I actually was. I shouldnât have. I should feel grateful and not poke my head in where it didnât belong. But I couldnât help the pull I felt towards him, the need to know him. Instead, I pulled my focus towards the steaming food in front of me, twisting the noodles on my fork and sticking them in my mouth. It was actually delicious.
The waitress came back with two waters without another word.
âOkay.â I took a sip of my water before speaking up again. âSo⊠letâs say, hypothetically, someone could know what people are thinking. Read minds, you know?â I wasnât even sure if this question was regarding me or him, but I was intrigued either way.
âHypothetically?â He asked, amused.
âMhm.â I nodded. âSo, how does it work? How is it that someone could find another person at the right time and just know that theyâre in trouble?â
âWell, hypothetically, it shouldnât take that someone any mind reading at all to know just how much trouble you get into in a town with absolutely no trouble.â He chuckled.
I only just looked at him, waiting for him to tell me the truth or not. Just from my look, he seemed frustrated, as if he was battling a war in his mind of whether or not he should tell me the truth.
âYou can trust me, you know?â Without a second thought I reached my hands towards his, but he pulled them away. My face was tinted red. I was glad his eyes were still to the floor.
âI was wrong about you.â He admitted. âYou're much more observant than I gave you credit for.â
âThought you were always right.â
âI used to be.â He finally looked at me. âBut, you proved me wrong.â
He spoke up again before I could respond. âI was wrong about something else, too.â
âYouâre not a magnet for accidents. No⊠thatâs not a broad enough classification. You are a magnet for trouble. If there is anything dangerous within a ten-mile radius, it will inevitably find you.â
âAnd you think thatâs you?â I guessed.Â
Just from his expression, I knew I was right. His face turned cold, in another effort to shut me out completely.Â
âUnequivocally,â he said.
My hands stretched across the table again as they had a mind of its own. Even as he pulled away, my hands persisted, shadowing over the back of his hand, feeling his skin with my fingertips. It was cold, like stone. Familiar. Like in my dream. Once the cold started to dissipate from my fingertips, I slowly inched my hand backâŠ
I wasnât the only one who noticed it. Edward looked down at where my fingertips once laid, a bewildered look on his face. To break his focus, I cleared my throat, muttering, âThank you,â I started. He looked up at me, trying hard to not glance back down at his hand. I continued âFor saving me⊠againâŠâ
âLetâs hope there isnât a third.â He said, his usual condescending self resurfacing. He placed both of his hands under the table, pulling himself back into our conversation.
âI followed you to Port Angeles,â he admitted. âI feel protective over you.â His expression seemed like he didnât know why himself, but he continued on, âI've never tried to keep a specific person alive before, and it's much more troublesome than I would have believed. But that's probably just because it's you. Ordinary people seem to make it through the day without so many catastrophes.â
It shouldâve bothered me, but it didnât. Instead, I felt content over the fact that this connection wasnât imaginary. He felt it to the point where he felt the need to protect me. Nothing about this was normal, but I seemed to not be fazed by it at all. So, why should I fight it? The only thing I was determined to fight was the smile that threatened to curve on my lips.Â
âDid you ever think that maybe my number was up the first time, with the van, and that you've been interfering with fate?" I speculated, distracting myself.
âThat wasn't the first time," he murmured. âYour number was up the first time I met you."Â
My breath hitched. But somehow, the memory didnât bother me anymore, not when I felt the safety I felt with him right now. Not when heâd gone beyond faith and saved me twice.
"You remember?" he asked.
"Yes." I was as calm as ever.Â
âAnd yet here you sit." There was a trace of disbelief in his voice; he raised one eyebrow.
"Yes, here I sit⊠because of you." I paused. âBecause somehow you always manage to find me?â
He studied me, his expression guarded. His eyes flashed down to my plate, then returned to mine.
âYou eat, I'll talk," he bargained.Â
I looked down at my now, lukewarm food, realizing how long itâs been since Iâd taken a bite. I filled up my fork and ate in return for his explanation.
âIt's harder than it should be â keeping track of you. Usually I can find someone very easily, once I've heard their mind beforeâŠ" He glanced at me with anxiety, and I noticed I had tensed up. I forced myself to swallow, then piled up my fork again for another bite.
âI kept loose tabs on Jessica, knowing only you could find trouble in Port Angeles. At first I didnât notice when you roamed off on your own â her thoughts were quite scrambled. Then, when I realized youâd left them, I went looking for you at the bookstore I saw in her head. I could tell you hadnât gone in yet â youâd gone south. I searched through the thoughts of people on the street just to see if anyone saw you. I was strangely anxiousâŠâ He trailed off, lost in thought, his gaze distant.
âI drove in circles, still⊠listening. The sun was setting, and I was considering following you on foot. But thenâ" He paused, teeth clenched in sudden fury, making an effort to regain composure.
âThen what?" I whispered. He continued to stare towards the floor.Â
âI heard what they were thinking," he growled, his upper lip curling slightly back over his teeth. So could I, even if it was just for a moment. âI saw your face in their minds." He was struggling to compose his anger as his entire face twitched up.
His hands were now in his face to contain his fury. âIt was very⊠hard â you can't imagine how hard it was for me to simply take you away, and leave them⊠alive." I was holding in a gasp. But, still⊠somehow⊠I wasnât afraid of him.Â
âI could have let you go with Jessica and Angela, but I was afraid if you left me alone, I would go looking for them," he admitted in a whisper. I sat quietly, dazed, my thoughts incoherent. My hands were folded in my lap, and I was leaning weakly against the back of the seat. He still had his face in his hand, and he was as still as if he'd been carved from the stone his skin resembled.Â
Finally he looked up, his eyes seeking mine, full of his own questions.Â
âAre you ready to go home?" he asked. The waitress had come over almost immediately after Edward muttered the words.
I nodded, satisfied that Iâd be the one spending an hour long drive with him, one that would further my answers to my long-awaited questions.
âHow are we doing?" she asked Edward.Â
âWe're ready for the check, thank you." He was a lot more reserved than earlier. His charming smirk had been replaced with a brooding expression, still reflecting the strain of our conversation. The waitress seemed to notice the change and looked a bit disoriented from it.
âS-sure," she stuttered. âHere you go." Before she even pulled out the check, a bill was already in his hand. He slipped it into the folder and handed it right back to her.Â
âNo change." He gave her a tight smile, then stood up. Meanwhile, I scrambled awkwardly up to my feet.Â
She smiled invitingly at him again. âYou have a nice evening." He didn't look away from me as he thanked her. I didnât even bother to smile. Walking out, he was close beside me, but still careful not to touch me.
He opened the passenger door, holding it for me as I stepped in, shutting it softly behind me. I shouldâve been used to this. But as I watched him circle around the car, so effortless and graceful, I couldnât help but think of how I was so utterly astonished by him.
Once inside the car, he started the engine and turned the heater on high. I was grateful, because even in the warmth of his coat, the temporary chill of the car had left me in shivers and a cold breath. I didnât even notice Edward weaving through traffic, as I usually did, but we were now on the freeway. Thatâs when he finally slowed down to a normal pace, for nowâŠ
âNow, about those theoriesâŠ" he said, his usual smirk and smugness creeping its way back.
âI still have more questions,â I revealed. âJust one.â
He only nodded, staring me down, not even paying attention to the road.
âWhat am I thinking right now?â
He sighed. âNow that. Thatâs the most frustrating thing of all.â
My eyebrows furrowed as I waited for an answer.
âI can read every mind⊠apart from yours.â
My breath hitched. âIs there something wrong with me?â
âI hear voices in my mind and you think thereâs something wrong with you?â So, Iâm a double freak. I shouldâve told him that I heard them too, even if it was only for a few moments⊠But if he could have secrets, so could I.
âHow does it work?â
âMostly, itâs like being in a huge hall filled with everyone speaking at once. It's just a hum â a buzzing of voices in the background. Itâs not until I focus on one voice and thatâs when their thoughts are clear.â He paused for a moment. âMost of the time I tune it all out â it can be very distracting. And then it's easier to seem normal.â It seemed agonizing.
âWhy do you think you canât hear me?â I askedÂ
curiously.
âThe only guess I have is that maybe your mind doesn't work the same way the rest of theirs do. Like your thoughts are on the AM frequency and I'm only getting FM." He grinned atÂ
me, suddenly amused.
âSo youâre telling me that my mind doesnât work right?â I chuckled, but really, his words unsettled me. It hit a nerve, tapping into a fear Iâd always dreaded might be true.Â
âDonât worry, itâs just a theory⊠which brings us back to yours.â
I froze. Suddenly, saying it out loud made me feel foolish. Despite all my research and seemingly reliable conversations â I still felt like I was losing my mind.
He noticed my silence. âI wonât laugh,â he said, scrunching his grin into a line.Â
I took a deep breath before I started. âSo, I ran into an old friend â Jacob Black, an old family friend of mine⊠His dad is one of the Quileute elders.â I noticed his expression change, his jaw clenching.
âAt La Push, he told me a few old legends â I think he was trying to scare me. But, he told me oneâŠâ I was distracted by the Forks welcome sign as Edward slowed down â I shouldâve known that the hour-long car ride would be cut short from Edwardâs driving habits.Â
Right as I was about to continue onto my theory, my attention shifted to the flashing police lights and sirens as we were nearing the police station. Then, my dadâs cruiser parked right in front.
âMy dadâs still here⊠Can you pull in?â I asked.
âThatâs my fatherâs car in the end. Whatâs he doing here?â
Once he pulled in, we both exited the car, meeting Carisle as he walked down the steps of the police station.
âCarlisle. What happened?â
âWaylon Forge was found in a boat out near his place. I just examined the body.âÂ
Flashes of images consumed me. The boat. Red. So much red. In a blur, the flash of crimson red was surrounded by pale bodies devouring the deceased Waylon Forge.
âY/N?â A voice interrupted the images, a shake and then a cold hand on my face is what I felt before I opened my eyes.
I squinted from the flashes of the red and blue police lights. With each blink, my vision cleared and in front of me was Edward â wearing an expression Iâd never quite seen from him before: fear.Â
And I felt it too, more than ever.
His once cold hand warmed on my face, almost tingling. But this time, he didnât move it.Â
âY/N?â Carlisle interrupted over Edwardâs shoulder. âAre you feeling faint?â
âNo.â I cleared my throat. Edward had finally let go, but that warmth of his touch lingered severely. âIâm fine, thank you. Just⊠just shock⊠H-he died?â I stuttered. âHow?â
I knew exactly how. The images from just seconds ago flickered. My heart pounded and my breath picked up from just the memory of it. The blood. Waymondâs blood. His lifeless body being torn apart by those three figures⊠Vampires.
Carlisle sighed. âAnimal attack.â
