For whatever reason, The Replacements never blew up like some of their peers despite writing some of the most beloved and enduring rock music from the late 80s and early 90s and sometimes I actually feel like that might have been a blessing in disguise. So many bands from the same era got too big to handle and then changed so much you can't recognize them anymore. I'm looking at you, R.E.M. That being said, it's hard not to wonder what would have happened if Paul Westerberg and the rest of the band had a long runway with lots of resources and arenas full of screaming fans instead of partied out drunken shows in medium sized bars in college towns.
