Now that I listen to and review records semi-professionally (ha!), it’s becoming harder and harder to get super excited about new stuff unless it’s really, really good. Enter this new compilation of demos from Prince’s vault called “Originals” that showcases some of the most famous and beloved songs he wrote for other people. These other people are mega stars like @apollonia_kotero, @officialthebangles, Sinead O’Connor, Martika, and @sheilaedrummer. So be honest, how many of you actually knew that the mid-80s radio slayer “Manic Monday” was actually written by Prince and not The Bangles? And I THINK by now, most people knew that “Nothing Compares 2 U” was also written by the purple icon, himself, but if you didn’t...now you do.
Now, beyond the obvious biggies mentioned above, the die-hard Prince fans will recognize many more tracks here as a lot of these works were written for his close collaborators, bandmates, and friends like Sheila E. and Apollonia. These tracks are even closer to their official versions but just like “Manic Monday” and “Nothing Compares 2 U” there’s something really magical and otherworldly about hearing these tracks performed by Prince himself. That something is the unique style and techniques he used on just about everything he put out, and it’s an x-factor special sauce that just simply cannot be replicated, even by the most talented of artists. Each of these tracks are from different studio sessions and they span from 1981-1991 which, depending on who you ask, is one of the absolute best eras of his catalog...and that’s tough to narrow down if we’re being honest. If you love Prince, you really should take a listen to this one because it’s a trip down memory lane that’s never been open before!
