Currently rereading Villains Are Destined To Die (peak) and Eckles is so interesting.. He starts out feigning loyalty to Penelope in the same way she does to her family to survive, and when he sees this he sees himself in her, then obsessively tries to "free" her as he sees them both as "prisoners." But the way he tries to free her is by attempting to isolate and oust her completely from the Eckhart duchy by bringing back Yvonne, so that Penelope can only rely on him to survive, just like what she did to him...
It's not really just "revenge" per se, but more like seeing both of them as "soulmates" who can only understand and help each other. Eckles' mindset has become broken down and twisted, understandably soβhe was a prisoner, a slave sold at an auction, and a subordinate to Penelope who threatened to bring him back to the slave auction if he didn't "prove his worth." He sees this conditional olive branch Penelope provides to him as the way to express devotion and care for someone because Penelope was one of the most influential people in his life to "love"/reach out for him, then tries to return the same sentiment back to Penelope to express his own "love."
She was Eckles' only lifeline, and she also saw him as her only lifeline to survive the game and the cruel reality that she's been thrust into. The lifeline Penelope provided Eckles was conditional and she had the power in their relationship to make his life worse at any moment, and so Eckles returns the favor. He sees bringing back Yvonne to further isolate Penelope so he can take her away to escape together as the lifeline he will provide to her, and at the same time it places him as the one in power in their relationship. If they escape the Eckhart duchy, without Eckles Penelope cannot physically defend herself, and he would be her only feasible means of surviving. He holds the cards, but he shows her his mercy, devotion, and "love" by continuing to extend his hand to her, while having it be very well known between the two of them that her survival depends on him. Just like what she did to him. To him, this dependence means "love."
The thing I really like about Penelope's dynamics with other characters in this series is how Callisto, Eckles, and Vinter mirror a similar struggle that Penelope has (Callisto's being outcasted and unloved, Eckles' being helplessly trying to survive in a cruel world under the whims of people who have the power to derail your fate, Vinter's being trying to defeat the treachery of the Leila). They all see her as a "comrade" of sorts, and it's interesting to see how it's expressed in their dynamics.
Penelope and Eckles' relationship is incredibly toxic and relies on being entirely dependent on the other for survival, and for Eckles this dependence becomes synonymous with love and morphs into obsession.
Callisto and Penelope's relationship is rocky because neither understand nor comprehend sincere love and care because they've never been given it, so of course they struggle with expressing it. They're two people who have never been loved properly coming to love each other. It's obviously rocky because they both have their own mental hurdles, but they feel seen by each other in a way unlike anyone else has in their life before.
Vinter and Penelope are both targets of the Leila (Yvonne) and are trying to defeat it in different ways: Penelope is held back from "finishing" the game and being free because Yvonne is actively trying to stop that from happening in order to obtain power, free the Leila, and bring about Leila World Dominationβ’. Vinter was the one who reset time from a previous timeline where the Leilas destroyed everything, to find "Penelope" who could save the universe. In a way they both see each other, to a certain extent, as a means to an end. However in their time together they form some semblance of a deeper connection, but will never advance due to the boundaries of their relationship that has been set. As Vinter says, he has realized his love "too late" for it to come to fruition.
If Penelope had gone through with poisoning herself at her coming of age ceremony and both she and Yvonne collapsed from the poison in their cups, what do you suppose would've happened?
Winter only had one antidote, so the choice would've been betwen saving Penelope and saving Yvonne. Who would've been chosen? And what would the consequences of that be?
I do love Winter's fan service panels

End of the chapter:
I like absolutely everything here. Perhaps because of a preconceived notion, because I have been waiting for this for many years... but I can not contain this feeling.
The beginning of the chapter, when everything is in warm colors. In the gloomy dining room, the renovations are completed, the Eckhart family sits down together again and makes fun of Reynold. And finally, a short conversation between the Duke and Penelope...
However, this changed with the hasty news that Pennel brought. The warm color fades, and cold fills everything. Excitement and a strange premonition.
And here it is. All the emotions are visible in their eyes.
The fourth season is going to be intense. This is just the beginning.
And in some ways these two dresses are similar to each other-
