As I listened to Catherine read your words for over 7 hours, with only one pause throughout its entirety, I found many intriguing references to life coincidences.​ I too, have many coincidences that I learned about through your book. Additionally, I also recently learned about some of the many Asian hate crimes and the reference to Vince's case.  I wrote several pieces to capture my thoughts at that time.​ You can see those posted here on my Instagram site.​ It's unfortunate how the media and certain people can shake up an entire nation and world. I use this analogy... (Source: One of my many relatives) If you collect 100 black ants and 100 fire ants and put them in a glass jar, nothing will happen. But if you take the jar, shake it violently and leave it on the table, the ants will start killing themselves. Red believes that black is the enemy, while black believes that red is the enemy, when the real enemy is the person who shook the jar. The same is true in society. Men vs. Women Black vs. White Faith vs. Science Young vs. Old I would hope through your book and the several films that will eventually be premiered, that more people can be educated with the many topics that Vince's tradegy touches. Day 10: I’ve been challenged by my #vincentchin project partner @anthonyma (from last year) Im concluding my 10 day challenge with the two projects that truly mean the world to me #queens and the #untitled #featurefilm about my #greatgrandmother #zhangyouyi #張幼儀. I am going to tell you a story - #8yearsold was a big year for me - it was the year I wanted to do everything like my dad - play tennis, wear glasses, have braces (and I got it all). It was also the year I went to China for the first time with my whole Hsu family. I had no idea what was going on, but they were celebrating my family and family heritage. The following year, I had a dream that lasted weeks about #timetravel - a Mr DW (#dimwit) guided me and other kids on a journey to different times and places. I wrote it into a book in #3rdgrade @thepegasusschool @pegasusalumniunite. I grew up being one of a few #api #asianamericans, but I’m so grateful to my family for constantly reminding me of who I am and where I come from. In honor of #fathersday, I include one of my favorite photos of me and #papahsu @hsu7769. And I am also grateful to the friends, other family members, schools, organizations, communities, who I have made me into who I am today - a filmmaker, a storyteller, and someone who constantly thinks and feels through the past - through the journeys of people who faced hardships and struggles that was more extreme, but similar to what we all are fighting for today. 10 Day Performer/Artist Challenge (do people still do this?) Day 9: I’ve been challenged by my #vincentchin project partner @anthonyma (from last year) These few days are important to our team. Yesterday was the 39th anniversary of the night of Vincent’s murder. In a few days will be the anniversary of his death. Anthony and I have gone out to #detroit #michigan 3 times over the last 3 years, and have talked to over 30 people who have been somehow involved with the story, case, and movement. Including this gentleman here: Gary Koivu, Vincent’s childhood best friend. Posted @withregram • @anthonyma Research trip in Detroit was a major success! The Vincent Chin case has been something my team and I have wanted to tackle for quite some time now. This trip was a testament to our passion & dedication to this project. We learned and spoke to old childhood friends of Vincent’s, lawyers, journalists, filmmakers, auto workers, community leaders and many more to paint the picture of what Detroit was like back in the 80s as well who Vincent was to his friends and peers. Detroit has a wealth of history and bustling with passionate & very generous people. Day 7: I’ve been challenged by my #vincentchin project partner @anthonyma (from last year) One of the few silver linings of the pandemic, is the opportunity to wrap up #postproduction on my #nyuthesisfilm #popshortfilm. After #ADR, final music selections, our brilliant #sounddesigner @dcfonhomme wrapped up the #sounddesign, and hope that this film finds its way into #filmfestivals soon. We just started the @cinequanonlab #storylineslab today, and so much of our discussion was how to separate ourselves from our personal lives from the writing process. POP! is/was my most personal work so far, and I’m so grateful to have worked with @michaelcumes to get me through that.
