“Freddie thinks I can turn him invisible. I’m sure turning myself into a slug is much easier. Sea slugs are cute, right?”
Somber is not a good look on Honey, her chin wrinkled in a pout she’s actively fighting against. Elsa’s touch is a comfort, and she turns into it before listing to the side in her best impression of the Pioneer Cabin tree, head thumping against the other girl’s shoulder. In spite of her efforts, her lips twitch.
“I wouldn’t be able to eat french fries,” she says as an afterthought, and while the moue is still audible in her voice, so are the beginnings of a smile. Here lies Slug Honey, who succumbed to sodium. Very Edward Gorey.
Honey pops up and clutches her own cheeks.
“Youth is a wonderful, incredible thing, Elsa,” she begins, impassioned, meeting her friend’s eyes. Her mouth is a resolute line. “But middle schoolers are--” she wants to say the worst but the words hiccup in her mouth—it’s just so mean (they aren’t the worst, they’re curious and wonderful! And one-hundred percent abominable) “--rude. They’re rude! There, I said it.” She takes a deep breath. The dam bursts: “I know they’ll outgrow it. The tweens are such a miserable age. I remember! I was tall and super awkward and I hated it, but I never took that out on anyone, did you?
“They said I was too old for Hello Kitty. Is anyone too old for Hello Kitty?” It’s a rapidfire ramble as she finally tugs off her magnetic San Franbassador’s name plate to chuck into her purse. Her hands flutter into the air. “And Karmi locked us out of her lab so she wouldn’t have to talk to them! Does fourteen still qualify as a tween?” Her hands fold over her heart. “She’s a spiritual tween. Why are they so scary?”
Honey slumps against the back of the bench. “And they were just plain awful to Wasabi. After, he said when kids reach that age they should be cryogenically frozen until they turn, like...sixteen. I don’t agree, but I don’t...disagree. I’m Switzerland.”
