The Hero's Disappearance
Had it all been a lie?
After the disappearance, nobody could find Valer.
Maybe she was never supposed to find Valer.
But here she was.
Standing over the scene she was never meant to see.
Valer, the one who ruled the city through kindness, and protected everyone she could.
Valer, the Hero.
And Valer.
The traitor.
~
Moika wasn't supposed to be on this route, on this patrol. But something had seemed wrong as she patrolled the normal route. The way the shadows seemed to move, like they were trying to warn her of something. Her power didn't usually move on its own. Which meant something was very wrong.
Or maybe she was just on edge. After the Hero's disappearance, the sidekick's life had been hell. Moika had to dodge reporters everywhere she went. The same questions asked again and again.
"Do you have any idea where your mentor may have gone?"
"Do you know more than you've told the public?"
"Is the agency trying to cover something darker?"
"Are you going to step up to fill Valer's spot?"
It was exhausting, and she didn't have the time, nor the willpower to deal with it. If she had known anything, anything, she would have acted on it, and everybody would have known by now.
But no. She was as much in the dark as everyone else, and it was tearing her apart.
Moika had climbed to the top of one of the older buildings after the shadows had started shifting. Even if it was nothing, it was better to check and make sure it really was nothing.
This part of town had little to no light along the streets and buildings, having been a spot where the city hadn't been able to fund more thoroughly after the great attack ten years ago, they weren't able to afford street lights, so it was easier to stay hidden as she moved.
Her mana seemed to be reacting more with the shadows, like pulling in a different direction, so she followed the disturbance lying within them.
She stopped on the edge of a building off a side street. Reading the way the buildings were structured, there was a small gap between the next building, and the entrance to the abandoned train station. That's where the disturbance seemed to be coming from.
Moika silently jumped to the next building, and crouched along the ledge.
There was movement below, but again, with barely any light, only the moon and stars providing any, and these structures blocking almost all of it, it was very hard to see anything.
Based on what she heard, there were at least two people, two different sets of footsteps walking down the alley. But they stopped at the end, where there must have been someone else, as she heard a quiet voice from the first of the two that walked in say,
"Didn't think you'd actually show after your whole act."
The person who must have already been down there, responded flatly, and quietly "I don't go back on my word."
So there were at least three people down there.
But that voice. It was eerily familiar.
Stop it. She couldn't jump to conclusions yet. She had to get more information first. Keep listening.
The second person from the original two spoke, his tone more relaxed and easygoing than the other two's. He wasn't as quiet either, not as worried it seems.
"you say that like it's gonna mean something, Aren't you going against everything you swore to by bein' here, miss glory?"
Their companion seemed to be opposed to his approach to this situation, and he muttered a quick "shut your mouth, you urchin!" Before speaking calmly again, too the third figure "my apologies. We aren't here to question you, just to get business done. So let's get to it, yeah?"
Then a small light was flickered on. It looked like one of the lights that could be produced from an agency C58 band. But those were only given to heroes who were either really important, or heroes they could trust it wouldn't get stolen from, or broken by. Moika hadn't been given one yet, seeing as she kept breaking her standard issue agency bands. It was far to easy to smack against a wall during a fight and break the mechanism. It wasn't her fault.
The light wasn't very bright, but it made the three figures visible, even if just only. She didn't recognize the first two, some guys dressed in dark flowy clothing that must have been meant to hide the shape of their figures. Either because of weapons, or so camera's couldn't track the height and what-not.
Then the third figure, the one with the band, she didn't immediately recognize. they wore a mask covering the bottom half of their face, with a hood covering the top half. but the clothing was oddly colorful for someone seemingly trying to do underhanded business without being spotted. But then she saw that particular pistol on their hip.
Valer's pistol. It still had that little sticker Moika had put on it randomly on a Tuesday stuck in the agency headquarters. it was hard to see from here, but the bright yellow stuck out on the dark weapon.
The band and the pistol. It had to be Valer. Unless... Maybe they were taken from Valer. Could Valer have been defeated by somebody? is that why they disappeared?
It seemed improbable, but maybe not impossible.
That third figure pulled a pouch off their weapons belt, and held it up between the three of them. their nails caught the light with that familiar sheen. "Right. Business. I've got one explosive. you've got one shot to get it right. But don’t take it lightly. Make sure you empty the building, or area of where you decide to place it, cause nobody will survive its blast. Before you set it off, make sure to contact me first. You know how, and I'll continue things as planned with Zura."
The first figure carefully took the pouch and nodded. "Understood." The second figure must have decided it was best not to speak again, and just stood quietly, hands shoved in their pants.
Moika was finding it hard to deny it now. The nails, the voice. It was unmistakably Valer. Nobody can replicate those things, unlike the pistol and band that could be taken or replicated. Valer had feline-like nails, sharp, and a color and sheen that couldn't be painted on. something not many people saw from the heroic videoes and posters.
But Moika had spent countless hours with Valer, so it didn't slip her notice.
Valer had mentioned planning something with Zura.
Zura?
Impossible. Mioka didn't believe it. This must be some messed up joke. Zura was the reason for the great attack ten years ago. Moika thought they were dead. They hadn't been seen after the hero before Valer took them down at the end of the great attack.
Valer had given explosives to people she could only assume were criminals, or worse, villains. And it seemed she was planning something with the biggest threat to everyone in this city.
Moika knew she must be missing something. But she didn't have that information yet and it felt like right now might be the worst time to exist in a state of physical being, not even twenty feet away.
Moika couldn't stay here, she had to get out, had to go report this to someone. But before she could even think of who to go find, a presence landed on the ledge of the building beside her. She froze, heart sinking.
a voice came from this new presence, light and amused.
"Valer said someone might show. How perfect for it to be you, little sidekick"
And then Moika's world went dark. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
