ruby has never had to hope so hard that her cover as ‘kristy’ worked as well as it did tonight. seeing sam in the diner she worked in was terrifying but she’d been quite controlled in her answers when he’d insisted he knew her and asked if she knew him.
‘no, sorry i don’t know a ruby. but you know there’s always that thing where there’s like, six people out in the world that look just like you? maybe that’s it?’
thank goodness mrs. weston, who watches salem on diner shift nights, didn’t bring her in to the diner like they’d planned, because looking at the girl, there’s no way ruby could have hidden the girl’s paternity if sam had caught her in her lie. but for now, thinking she was still safe, ruby let herself into her tiny apartment and thanked mrs. weston for staying with salem. then she set about putting her things away for the night, peeking behind the partition in the one room living area that kept her bed separate from her ‘living room’ to check and make sure salem was sleeping, and then went into her tiny kitchenette to make herself a drink.
