VIDOCQ (2001)
dir. pitof
Podcast:Â Detective Diaries continues into Season 3, now with 20,000 + listens; regular episodes on Investigative Tradecraft, Forensic Investigation, Historical Detectives and some of the characters involved in Private Investigation:
"Javert, being an artist, had a taste for the unforeseen. He hated those well-heralded successes which are talked of long in advance and have had the bloom brushed off. He preferred to elaborate his masterpieces in the dark and to unveil them suddenly at the last."
By this point in the Brick, Javert assumes some features of Vidocq: he is planning his anti-criminal operation as if it were an artistic self-expression, "his masterpiece."

Exquisite profile of silent era film actor, René Navarre. 💖
glad to see you back from...huh, the seine?
It takes me forever to watch movies on my to-watch list, and I finally got around to L'Empereur de Paris (2018) after at least a month of reaaaaallly wanting to see it. For whatever reason casting it to the TV via Roku only let me use French subtitles, but I could follow it well enough. The critical reviews are so-so but I loved it! Basically, you will love this film if you are in the target demographic of Wants to F#@% Eugène-François Vidocq.
I don't know that I would find Vincent Cassel that sexy outside of the costume and the sideburns, but wow he was a delight to watch in this role. (Never mind that he looks way older than the historical Vidocq in 1805, when this movie takes place).
He is also tragically underrepresented in the few gifs of this movie on tumblr. There was a bit of ahistorical silliness with the hair and makeup on the actresses (to no one's surprise), but the men's clothes and the street scenes are superb. Some well-done military uniforms, too. La période historique est très bien reconstituée.
I'm glad I own this, which wasn't much more expensive than renting it, I will definitely watch it again.
