#vidibox

On June 12.13.14 2014 we presented a vidibox showcase, as part of Sonar MarketLab, during the Sonar festival in Barcelona. This was an important milestone for us, as we wanted to see how our app could drive an event on its own. The installation consisted of two iPads running the vidibox app and a few projectors. This video gives you a taste of what we did.

Interactive Project Showcase

vidibox was released a couple of months ago, and it included from day one a project sharing feature. Basically, you can pack any of your projects, and share it via dropbox. This way other vidibox users can play with it. We wanted to get our user community involved, so we asked them if they had projects to showcase. The visitors would be free to browse, play and remix all the projects. The response was overwhelming: we received more than 20 projects from all around the world. What we loved is that each user has a very personal approach to creating projects.You could play fast-paced DnB loops (Liquid Drum&Bass, by avDOX), have fun with 8-bit synths and visuals (Retro Video Music, by RobotKid), recreate a dance performance (ARK 2, by Benjamin Juhel), or explore a dystopian world where Pyongyang is the new Düsseldorf (DPRK, by Nokami & Michael Trommer), to name a few projects. You can find more information about all the contributors on our Featured artists page

Live concerts

We organised live shows with bands that had already adopted vidibox or wanted to give it a shot. A good exercise, as we wanted to see performances specifically built around vidibox and get the feedback of live artists. Here's the line-up

Girasomnis - An artistic project around the world of dreams 

MATIC - A combination of electronica, trip-hop, tech house, ambient, and experimental music

Chindogu - Marcelo Vidal is a renowed Video Mapping artist, who likes to do perform DJ sets in his spare time. With vidibox, he did both music and visuals.

The Suicide of Western Culture - No need to present the electronic duo who gave us a flavour of their upcoming songs

Live Capture

Finally, vidibox makes it easy to record videos from the iPad camera and remix them. We encouraged the visitors to film themselves to be part of the event. We either projected those live recordings along other projects, or we made use of vidibox not-yet-released projection mapping module (more information about this shortly) to have the users projected on white boxes. 

The Future

In other news, we are working on exciting features for vidibox. The projection mapping module we worked on is already functional, but is not yet friendly enough to go into production. We have been receiving great support and feedback since we launched 2 months ago. vidibox users from all around the world have sent us their comments, improvement proposals and even shared their projects and videos with us.

Every single suggestion has been taken into consideration and added to our road map for future updates.

Today we release vidibox 1.1.6: this update comes with many more options to import medias from other apps on your iPad.

vidibox is an audiovisual remix machine. Play music and videos in real time using a midi pad controller interface.

Today we added MIDI and Audiobus support to vidibox. MIDI support is based on Apple's CoreMidi framework, and allows for both wired and wireless MIDI connections.

Some possible configurations:

iPad <-> Desktop Computer (Ableton Live session for instance)

iPad <-> Midi Controller (Korg nanoPAD 2 for instance)

Desktop Computer <-> several iPads

iPad <-> iPad

Before we go on, we need to stress that those features are still in beta stage. If you find any issue, let us know and we will address it.

Let's focus on the latest configuration. We would like to sync two iPads together via MIDI, so that quantized events share the same clock.

iPad clock sync Setup

vidibox can join a Wireless MIDI session but cannot create one by itself. We need to use a third-party app for doing this. We found that MidiBridge  was great for this. We will keep you posted if we find other options.

We are going to configure an iPad as master (it sends the clock) and another iPad as slave (receives the clock)

Master iPad configuration

In MidiBridge, in the interface tab, create a connection between MidiBridge and CoreMidi Net Out, as shown below

In vidibox, from Project->Midi Options, disable Midi Clock In and enable Midi Clock Out

Slave iPad setup

We are going the other way around.

In MidiBridge, in the interface tab, create a connection between CoreMidi Net In and Midi Bridge, as shown below

In vidibox, from Project->Midi Options, disable Midi Clock Out and enable Midi Clock In

... and this should be enough for you to play both iPads in sync.
