The Scottish novelist Margaret Oliphant was born on April 4th 1828.
Margaret Oliphant was born on the outskirts of Edinburgh in Wallyford in 1828 and thanks to her mother she was given an excellent education, she wrote her first novel, Passages in the Life of Mrs. Margaret Maitland at the age of 17.
Over the course of her career, she published nearly one hundred novels. She became a lifelong contributor to Blackwood’s magazine in Edinburgh, and is known for writing domestic realism, historical fiction, and the supernatural. Blackwoods Magazine also published some of her best-received novels. As well as her fiction, she also published a great deal of critical work, including A Literary History of Scotland, using sharp wit to expose the hypocrisy and injustices of Victorian society towards women.
She outlived her husband and all seven of her children, and went on to help her alcoholic brother and his family. By the end of her life in 1897, Margaret Oliphant had written more than 90 novels, 50 short stories, 25 works of non-fiction and around 300 articles.
A bronze memorial stone sits in St. Giles Cathedral on the Royal Mile, commemorating the life and work of Margaret Oliphant which was unveiled in 1908 by her friend, and author, J.M.Barrie.

A flinch came from the man as he'd been stuck in his thoughts, far too gone before he felt a hand on his shoulder, enough to draw him from his thoughts. The blonde sergeant turned his attention to look at Jacob, the other looked a little concern if his knowledge of the man served right. Freddie wasn't sure why he'd come to agree to go to the pub with the younger man, a pint each as they'd clacked the mugs as a cheers moments prior.
Sheepishly smiling, the tug of lips was faint, but nonetheless there. "I apologize if I seemed to be elsewhere, what were you speaking about before? Before I was lulled off into my own thoughts."

Brows knitted together as the sergeant tried to refrain himself from shouting at the Assassin, jaw clenched and nails digging into palms. “..Jacob..” The man let out warningly as eyes looked at him, agitation in them, flaming into a near anger soon.

The Clans of the Scottish Highlands.
By James Logan Robert Ronald McIan
The Clans of The Scottish Highlands, published in 1845 on the centenary of the Jacobite Rising with text by James Logan and illustrations by Robert Ronald McIan. It proved so popular that it was reissued in 1857, after his death. His depictions of clansmen fanned the romantic revival of interest in Gaeldom that was led by Queen Victoria, to whom the book was dedicated.

“How about a friendly game of chess, hm? Surely I can win this time.. with some determination.” Jacob sheepishly smiled at the blonde as he sat down infront of him, knowing the last time he beat him too easily at the game, but perhaps he could win this time, if their little game doesn’t get disrupted again.

Huffing, the sergeant didn’t say much after, knowing that Jacob was right and that his injuries needed attention despite thinking he is fine, when in reality the bruises and cuts spoke otherwise. The hand on his shoulder and squeeze didn’t make him hiss in pain luckily, sitting down in front of the man so that he could address them. “Do you wish me to rid some of my clothes so you can actually get to the cuts?” He asked, serious tone and all.
He was more than willing but with his condition at the moment, it would hurt massively.
