there have been people who have experienced supernumerary limbs without the loss of them so when others claim to experience phantom sensations it's not appropriating medical terminology because it's not a term conclusive to only a particular group of individuals. :P
so, letās review all the instances of phantom limbs in medical/scientific lit, shall Ā we?
- āclassicā phantom limbs, experiences after loss of a body part (can interestingly also go for body parts that arenāt limbs, like breast or eyes). Itās most likely rooted the fact that the brain still has the neural structures related to said body part present while the body part itself is missing (here).
- sorta related here, on the bits of ābrain has structure that body is lackingā is that there are incidents of ftm transsexuals reporting phantom penis sensations pre-op (here)Ā
Then of course we got the supernumerary phantom limbs, which are much rarer in medical history. They basically come in two flavours:
- induced, in which the brain is tricked into the phantom sensations of a additional limb (here). The problem here is this sort of induction requires some deliberate tricking of the brain so I donāt think thatās really the explanation that otherkin wanna go for. Note how this study says that the object used to induce the phantom sensations must be humanoid, and also thatĀ
the illusion depends on visuotactile-proprioceptive integration that obeys key spatial and temporal multisensory rules confined to near-personal space
Which means that not just do you have to see your own limb and the dummy limb thatāll induce the phantom limb , it also requires that the tactile input on the real hand and the dummy hand are parallel, to allow the brain to sort of āextendā to it. Thatās pretty damn deliberate.
- And then of course thereās the other form of supernumerary phantom limbs, and thatās the one after damage of the central nervous system, such as a stroke (here) or spinal cord injury (here). As such, these naturally occurring supernumerary phantom limbs are a sign of damaged feedback in the nervous system of the patient. I donāt think thatās a thing otherkin should allude to, either, because you know, brain damage. Itās also much rarer than post-traumatic limb loss phantom limbs (here).
So yeah, the vast majority of phantom limbs is medically significant either for traumatic loss of a body part, or damage to the CNS. I donāt think that otherkin should use that kind of language if other terms are readily available.Ā
you only respect the otherkin whose beliefs aren't in direct conflict with your own. picking and choosing individuals out of a group whose origins of identity you think are okay compared to those apart of the group who believe otherwise is what constitutes the gross behavior. of course you'll say you have no agenda either, there is no reason for you to admit to it because then you'd lose all credibility. i suppose it's only a matter of time you slip up like mod Andrew did on OKQSSS. :P
This is not a matter of belief, this is a matter of āyou and physical reality are in crass disagreement and Iām going to side with physical reality here because itās got a very good track record of winning these casesā
Also yes I can decide that someoneās beliefs are not worthy of respect. Some people have harmful believes and I will absolutely not respect those. Not all beliefs and not all opinions were created equal.

the only people who seem to think i'm in need of any sort of help are the one's who do not respect otherkin. i find that terribly ironic. ya'll have a hidden agenda although yours is less evident considering you're hiding under the guise of "biology" and other nonsense to mask your true intentions. it's pretty gross behavior to be completely honest and a horrible mentality.
also my use of āsectā is correct in the context of my original sentence. i didnāt mean it in the religious sense but rather a shortened version of āsectionā so i can understand the potential confusion. i didnāt want to say plane as i believe the sections of this planetary alignment are vastly different from the planes of reality that the universes in itself exhibit.
.. I have bad news for in regards to the whole ādonāt respect otherkinā thing. You know, thereās a lot of otherkin on my blog, sending me questions and generally having friendly conversation with me and they donāt bother me at all. The difference is that these people consider otherkin a spiritual thing (which you know itās hard to the correctness of metaphysical things) and youā¦ donāt.Ā

I have no agenda aside from trying to clear up common misconceptions about science, help people who have questions in regards to science, and warn people about IRL dangers of things they might do while engaging metaphysical things, like people who use poisonous plants in spells. Iām sorry for you if that counts as āhorrible mentalityā and āgross behaviourā to you but Iām trying to genuinely help people get information and avoid injuries.Ā

Iām well aware that youāre stuck in your ways and that thereās no helping you aside from maybe bludgeoning you over the head and dragging you to a hospital while youāre unconscious, which is, frankly speaking, unethical.
But while you might be stuck this way there are people out there who are not and who I can help by highlighting the issue for them, you know, as evident when one of my followers spoke up to stay that they had experienced the very same thing and never realized what further ramifications it could have. Youāre a lost cause, other people arenāt.Ā
