Today was a rough day for Drew. He went 2-2 in his matches with one of his wins being a forfeit. FYI: 1) Drew is 10; a 5th grader wrestling up on the middle school team (as a 3rd year wrestler) 2) He is one of the biggest guys on the team and usually up against 8th graders who’ve plunged head first into puberty and are getting their man-muscles. These are not excuses for my son but to help you understand his challenges this year. And you know, he’s done well despite it all. He’s won some matches and lost some as well. But in the last few weeks he lost more than he’s won and his confidence has been in the toilet. Today Drew faced the same guy he faced on Thursday—and the kid pinned Drew seconds into the first period. Today, Drew went all 3 periods with him and didn’t get pinned! He lost, but in my mind it was a good loss. He worked hard! But the loss still hurt. His second loss, he was pinned seconds into his match. And was crushed, frustrated the guy used a move on his he didn’t know about let alone how to defend it. #learningopportunity Between that match and his last match some of his teammates helped pull him out of his head and breathe life and belief into him. And he began to smile and believe in himself a little more. His last match was his from the first whistle! And it was a pin! I wish you could have seen his joy! His smile! I’m so proud of him for not giving up. I know he was struggling. Be he gave it his best on each match. And it paid off! My eyes may have leaked a little. Friend, regardless of your challenges or circumstances, DON’T GIVE UP! Give it your best effort and keep going. How happy are those...! Happiness. Did you know God offers us soul-satisfying happiness? I knew He offered joy. Peace. Love. Fulfillment. But happiness?! Yes PLEASE! I remember memorizing Psalm 1 in my 3rd grade Sunday School class. Bernice Scribner was adamant about us memorizing God’s Word. Planting it deep in our hearts. I had no idea then what treasures I was collecting or how valuable and life-giving those passages would be as I grew up. I hated it then. But now, it’s one of my favorite things! And when God led me back to Psalm 1 for an in-depth study, I had no idea what other treasures He had for me—and you—in this familiar and beloved Psalm. What joys He would reveal. Or how much more I would fall in love with Him. I thought my study was just between Jesus and me. But then He told me it was time to share what we talked about. Rich truths I’d never noticed before. Yesterday I spent the afternoon visiting with a precious friend. We cuddled in blankets on opposite ends of the sofa, drank coffee, snuggled with the dogs, enjoyed a cozy fire, and talked in an open real, honest and vulnerable way. As one who pours into the lives of others: mentoring, teaching, discipline—this was such a gift! An opportunity I don’t often get. Friend, never underestimate the importance of being an active listener. One who loves and hears the heart of someone else—not “to fix it” but to love. And never underestimate the need to be blatantly honest, raw, and vulnerable with someone you trust. These are treasured gifts. Sanctioned and honored by God. I’ve spent the last two weeks researching and writing my final teaching on 1&2 Samuel for the Women’s Bible Study. For two weeks I’d had all the pieces for this teaching, but I couldn’t figure out how to put them together. Then late last night after crying out to God in utter frustration the first two pieces snapped together. Then another. And another. Energized and excited I was up LATE seeing the picture emerge. This morning, I was up early putting the final pieces together. And I’m thrilled with the final results. Let the LORD be PRAISED! 🥰 Sometimes that’s the way of life. We have all the pieces and we can’t figure out which way they go together. We try various things and combinations and nothing works. In all honesty, we just end up rearranging the mess and making a bigger one. Then in utter frustration we cry out to God. We surrender to Him and His plan. Eventually the pieces start to come together. . Be patient. Trust Him and the process. cry out BEFORE the frustration sets in. After a snow stormy weekend’s not so subtle reminder we live in Minnesota, we woke to this! ❄️ Snow clinging to the trees. A layer of ice on the lake.
