One Step Behind You Pt.3
A/n: Please bear with me I love slow burns. I also opened my computer to post on Depop but got distracted and opened Tumblr to write this instead. Enjoy my loves!
Summary: Being the daughter of one of Piltover's most powerful councilors is never easy. You're a prime target for the criminals from the Undercity, so your parents assign you a personal bodyguard: Vi. She's tough, intimidating, and especially good at her job, but you don't want a bodyguard. A bodyguard means being watched every day, all day. So, you make her job impossible. Sneaking out at night, slipping away in crowded markets, and breaking every rule Vi wants you to follow. Even though you're the main reason her hair is turning grey, you can't deny there is still an appeal to her. Those arms... and that back. You could watch that movie on repeat.

It's been a month since you were first introduced to Violet. A routine has been set. Nicknames feel natural, and the arguing has turned into playful bickering. You can't remember a time when teasing wasn't part of every conversation you two shared. You've gotten comfortable around her. Too comfortable, according to Elara and Caitlyn.
You've started to let her in your room when getting ready. Once Vi found how comfortable your lounge chair is, it has been her permanent spot in your room. She'll sprawl across it, with her boots on top of either the chair or the table next to it, which would normally get you irritated, but it's Vi.
Others around you have also gotten suspicious of your relationship. Especially Elara.
Elara's not allowed to come into your room in the mornings, but instead waits with your schedule in the grand entrance. She watches as you make your way downstairs in either an elaborate dress, with Violet carrying the long train, or in an upscale outfit, while Violet carries the most ridiculous, girliest bag you own.
Today is no different.
But, as of now, one of the housemaids is cleaning up your vanity of brushes and pins after curling your hair. You're running your fingers through the curls until you realize how quiet it is. Normally, there would be a flipping of magazine pages she found on your table, or tapping coming from Vis boots. But she's silent.
You wait until your maid leaves the room and glance at Vi through the mirror. "Vi, you're staring."
"Am I?" She makes eye contact with you in the mirror. "I can't help it."
A familiar flutter in your stomach approaches. And for once, you don't have a smart ass response ready.
Vi notices. "Wow."
"What?" You narrow your eyes.
"I finally shut you up." A smile grows on Vi's face. Almost proud of what she does to you.
"You did not." You furrow your eyebrows.
'You've been quiet for, like, five whole seconds."
You scoff and turn back to combing your curls. "Whatever."
A few seconds pass, and you glance over at her again. "You're doing it on purpose."
Vi's eyebrows lift, and she slowly gets up from her chair, not breaking eye contact. "Doing what?"
"You're trying to make me nervous." You notice her reflection getting bigger behind you.
Vi leans down right next to your face, still not looking away from you in the mirror. Your cheeks are only centimeters from touching. "Is it working?" She whispers.
Your mouth opens, but nothing comes out. You can feel her breath on your neck, which sends shivers down your spine, all the way to your stomach. Some travel further down than others.
A small laugh escapes her lips. "Thought so."
You turn to face her. "Don't get too confident." Your eyes flash to her lips before reconnecting with hers again.
Before any more words were exchanged, a loud knock comes from your bedroom window, and a small figure appears.
"Am I interrupting something?" Elara leans on the door, looking at the image in front of her. Frankly, there are no excuses; it looks as bad as it is.
The car approaches the front doors of the event, and the first thing you see is high-class people in bright, extravagant dresses and suits. Everyone looks so put together.
Once you get into the event, one of the servers offers you a glass of champagne. You begin to reach out to grab it, until...
"Absolutely not." Vi lowers your hand gently, and the server walks away.
"I wasn't gonna drink it." You look over your shoulder at her.
"Sure."
A couple of songs go by when you glance across the ballroom. You notice Vi standing against the wall, alone. Her arms are crossed, watching the room, waiting for any suspicious people or a rule break from you.
You walk over to her, stopping directly in front of her. She watches you the whole time. "You look miserable."
Vi corrects her posture and looks down at you. "So? I'm working."
"You're just standing in a corner." You look down to fix your bracelets.
"It's the best view of the room." She looks back up to see someone in the middle of dropping their drink, until someone else saves it.
You look up at her, and, with confidence, say, "Best view of me, you mean?"
"That too." A small smirk appears on Vi's face, trying to read your reaction.
You freeze; every noise in the room is muffled, and all you're thinking about is Vi. Your eyes flash down to her lips. Her scar isn’t as noticeable; did she put on lip gloss? She looks beautiful, but that's the last thought on your mind. All you wanna do is jump on her and clash your lips against hers. Who cares if a little gloss gets messed up?
Vi licks her lips. She notices you staring. Your eyes connect with hers.
You clear your throat and correct your posture. "Come dance with me."
Vi raises her eyebrow, half surprised. "Dance?"
"Yeah. You're always keeping an eye on me. Might as well give you a good reason to." You reach out your hand for her to grab, just in time for the music to change into something more upbeat.
Vi finds it hard to say no to you. Even though that is basically her whole job. She grabs your hand with a higher pitched huff and follows your lead to the dance floor.
Your hand connects with hers as Vi's hand reaches to your waist. You're swaying with the music; you seem natural, like you've done this multiple times before. Vi is stiff and tense. She's never done this. She’s uncomfortable.
"Loosen up, girl." You let go of her hand and playfully hit her shoulders. "Have fun."
"I have to keep an eye on you." She looks up and around the room, but now its filled with eyes on her. More than she would like.
"I'm right in front of you. We're dancing." You look up at her.
"I can multitask." She takes a gulp, and looks back down at you.
You laugh under your breath. "Stealing my line, I see."
"It sounded better coming from me." Vi's hands loosen on your waist, and she starts to move with the music, just enough to make you happy, but still maintaining her tough facade.
"I can-" You stumble over your own legs. "I can do it myself." You smack away at Vi's grasp on your waist, trying to guide yourself up the stairs to your room.
You guys got home later than expected. Actually, you fully expected to be late when you were asking...no, begging Vi to get ice cream before going home. This only allowed the five glasses of wine you drank under Vi's watch to seep further into your system. But she already scolded you about it.
"Sure you can, cupcake." She returns her hand to the small of your back, giving you a little boost up the stairs in front of her.
You glare at her over your shoulder. "You're making fun of me!" You huff.
"I'm helping you."
"Same thing." You look past her at the long, winding staircase you all managed to climb. The sight of it makes you dizzy and almost lose your balance. Again.
Vi snorts and tightens her grip on your back. "Just keep walking."
You manage to go a couple more steps before stopping. You look down at your dress, then behind you at Vi. "Did I look stupid tonight?"
"Cupcake-"
Your voice begins to crack. "Because I really liked my dress, and I made sure my hair looked perfect, but I don't know. I- I feel like it wasn't my best. And then I drank too mu- much, so I tripped over it while leaving. So people are gonna-"
"You look beautiful, cupcake." Vi interrupts. Her teasing tone disappears, it’s more sincere now.
You shake your head. "No, no, you're just saying that because you have to." You begin to lose your balance but catch yourself on the railing.
"I don't have to say anything." She grabs your waist with two hands.
You're now eye level due to being a couple of steps ahead of her. "Then why didn't you say anything?"
"About your dress?" Vi's eyebrows knit together.
You nod; a small pout appears on your lips. "You were staring at me all night."
"I was." She glances at your lips, then back to your eyes. "I thought you already knew how good you looked." Vi moves a strand of hair out of your face, behind your ear. "You walked in there like you owned the damn place. Everyone was looking at you."
You look down at your dress, amused by her response. "I only cared if you thought I looked good."
For once, Vi doesn't have a snarky remark ready for you. "You really wanna know what I thought?"
You nod, still looking down.
"I thought you looked fucking gorgeous." She lifts your head up.
"Even when we were dancing?"
Her voice deepens. "Especially when we were dancing."
"Even when I tripped going to the car?"
"That was probably my favorite part." Vi lets a quiet laugh escape.
"Hey!" You hit her arm playfully, almost missing. Your vision still isn't steady.
"Easy, cupcake. You're gonna fall over." Vi catches your wrist before you could try hitting her again, a grin spreads across her face.
"I am not." Your eyes narrow.
"Come on. Let's get you to bed." Vi turns you around and leads you up the rest of the stairs.
Once you've reached the top, the hallway walls start to move in and out. Why did you have to choose the room all the way at the end? Everything starts to merge together in the dimly lit hallway. Vi gives your waist a gentle squeeze before scooping you into her arms.
You reach the door to your room, and Vi puts you down. She swings the doors open, which allows you to sloppily walk over to your bed while taking out any pins that still remain in your hair. As Vi closes the door, your heel catches on the rug, almost sending you flat on your face, before you catch yourself.
"See. I'm fine." You look over your shoulder and give her a sloppy smirk.
"Uh huh. You're doing a great job convincing me." She walks over to you.
"I know." You sit at the edge of the bed and start to unbuckle your heels, but you’re horribly missing.
Vi scoffs as she kneels down in front of you to help.
You look down at her. "You're so good to me."
Vi meets your gaze. "It's a part of the job."
She unbuckles both of your heels and slips them off of your feet. She then makes her way up to your hair and takes out the remaining pins so your curls fall loosely around your shoulders.
You look up at her, undoing your pins. "Why are you being so nice to me?"
There's a pause.
"Because you're drunk." Vi's gaze shifts to the bracelets on your hands, and she begins to unclasp them.
You sign. "Thats not a good answer."
"It's the only one you're getting tonight."
You examine her face. Her freckles. The scar on her lip. Her powder blue eyes. She's beautiful. You guys have never spent this much time together without wanting to fight. But then again, it’s more teasing than fighting now.
"Vi." Your voice cracks
"What?"
"Can you kiss me?" Your eyes meet hers, but Vi's are still focused on your bracelet. Big hands and tiny clasps clearly don't get along.
"Cupcake..." Vi finally gets the bracelet off and places it on the nightstand.
"What if I said please, like I did with the ice cream? Would you then?”A smile appears on your face, and you two make eye contact.
"You don't have to." Vi leans in and puts her hand gently on your cheek, but doesn't close the gap separating her from you.
Before anyone can say anything else, you lean forward and press your lips against hers.
It's soft, gentle, and quick. All the butterflies in your stomach flutter away when the warmth of her lips clash with yours. Both of you are too afraid of any sudden movements too soon.
Vi pulls away slightly, but your foreheads are still connected. Her eyes are on you, and only you.
"You should go to bed, cupcake." Vi bites her bottom lip while slowly pushing you down onto the bed.
“Can you stay?" You say once your head hits the pillow, while looking up at her.
"Not tonight." She maneuvers your legs under the covers. "Maybe next time." She pulls up the covers until they're up to your shoulders.
"Then I can't wait until next time." You smile at her and roll over before you can read her expression, but that's a mystery you want to figure out later.
The morning light starts to hit your face, and the pounding headache begins, with only one very inconvenient memory replaying in your head.
Vi.
The kiss.
You bury your face into your pillow and let out a muffled "Oh god."
As much as you want to replay this memory over and over, and as much as you wish you were sober during it, you now have to face this girl. And she definitely remembers everything.
