Simon rocking the shit out of that eel!!! Also, for people drawing/writing tree!Simon stuff, it does seem like it has networked to the side of a trench wall and webbed through it.
Yeah, no, that's definitely just a tree. I was going for something a little more fleshy, like maybe a basket starfish/vine shape, but that is, indeed and confirmed, a whole ass tree, trunk and everything.

Death of Chrome Dome FX designs for our TMNT short Chrome Alone 2, released in Theaters in front of Spongebob: Search For Square pants last Christmas. Find it now on Paramount Plus on the extras tab under TMNT Mutant Mayhem. The villain in our short is a rogue AI, drawing his death was very cathartic. Raph yells AI Sucks at the end of the short ❤️

The thing about practical effects is often there is cg overtop. Now where that falloff is matters in the shot.
This marketing poo poo "IT'S PRACTICAL EFFECTS" has been around a long time but it is getting very pervasive of late and my cg friends are sad so I'm sad. 😅
Here's what's important.
Edit: I like rage wrote this before bed. It's not the clearest but I'm leaving it 😅
1. Having good ref forces directors not to be idiots but often the puppets just aren't enough. Famously they will say to just fix shit in post (vfx) with no plan, but with a puppet they have to have a plan, a shot, an idea. As someone who worked 2 months in a vfx studio before being like "lol absolutely not" directors are IDIOTS when it comes to vfx UNLESS they come from an anim/fx background OR have a trusty CG Supe they keep around.
2. cg staff aren't unionized. The vfx houses are contracted to the house, often who gets to be credited even part of that contract. They cannot speak up for themselves. Literally can't.
3. you can't see the difference between good cg and bad UNLESS it's a close up human face. Trust me you do not clock the set extensions, the fixed fabric, or the fake lights. You're not spotting the fully swapped out hair because the wind was funny, the shot by shot slimming down of actresses, or de-jiggling jowls in action films. Sorryyyyy. To say nothing about hero characters or big explosions. You know to look for signs of cg on a puppet alien, you don't even know to look for the CG on dick bulges or subscattering elf ears. Sorry pals, the biggest magic tricks are the ones you don't even know to look for
4. When doing Digi doubles, often so much changes for the Digi douvle you have to replace it in the prop shots anyways because directors can't make up their minds about anything ever (and nobody can ever tell you). When they say "it's just the light showing thru that we fixed" Babe what the actual fuck how do you think they rendered the light? that's a Digi double. Oh the cyclops was cg? Look someone skipped their kids softball game to run skin Sim on that thing, puppet or not
5. It's a marketing ploy to make YOU feel smart and cultured and buy their product (film) you jagweeds. Rather than hating incompetent studio staff, they want you to hate cg artists and pat yourself on the back for being super smart hating VFX. Don't you want to know? DON'T YOU WANT TO KNOW?!
It's all important work and everyone deserves credit but please for the love of god stop fighting saying "no no it's practical effects" THE VFX ARTISTS CANNOT TELL YOU except crying from anonymous accounts in random comment section arguments
Signed: works in videogames, many besties in VFX
(Cg/vfx is not ai k guys cool I'm not even talking about ai)
