He'll enjoy it when he gets that far, but he's not enough of a monsterfucker to be anything but a little unnerved by the concept of "make your own hole." I enjoy this element of slimes, but it does not come to Vezrik naturally. 😔 Alluvion will likely need to help.

I'm not super happy with it, lol, but here is the first piece of lineart I've finished with my new tablet. I'm really out of practice with CSP...
Alluvion also kinda has some damage from something similar to lrb, I fear... I haven't settled on exactly how old they are, but over a century at least, and their travels culminated in one particularly important relationship that they saw to its conclusion. They've kept their distance from other people since then, and this scrap of ruins is the closest they've gotten to a mortal settlement in several years. It's not that they've interacted with no one, but it's been sparse.
But Alluvion really can't not help people, and they crave company way too much not to want more of Vezrik's. As they mentioned, they don't know much about elves (among other things); they've never gotten close to one. They are aware that they live a long time, but that hasn't driven them to intentionally seek them out (yet).
Vezrik's lifespan is kind of uncertain because he's part orc and hobgoblin, which I think are even shorter-lived than humans in the D&D/PF background that was in my head when I created him. But it's not either of those canons, so I can do whatever I want, lol. I'm debating reinjecting some fae stuff into the hobgoblins here since the shift from house spirit to big hulking warrior is only due to a casual aside from Tolkien, so far as I know. But then that requires me to have an inkling of how fae work here. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Anyway, it's a thing they'll have to talk about eventually.
It's honestly kind of funny working on Tonic and Fever because the Vezrik ambiently in my mind and the Vezrik in the story are very different people. The Vezrik in my mind is essentially post-canon. He and Alluvion are painfully lovey-dovey. 😩
General reflection on Tonic: the structure is a bit amateurish, particularly in the middle chapters, and probably not how I would do it right at this moment in time. If, y'know, I were carefully planning and hadn't just sat down and started writing in a burst after 5 years of inactivity, lol.
But I'm actually pretty proud of the prose quality? I think in some ways it's probably better than a lot of what I've written since, maybe just by virtue of having slightly more engaging things to talk about. I said I'd do some light editing (since I will probably start uploading it to AO3 soon), and honestly? Yeah, very light. There's not a lot I find myself wanting to tweak.
Part of the hold up with the rest is that, at least for what comes after, I do want to plan better and improve the structure. The rest of it is that it took me a long time to answer the question of "How do you move an 8 foot tall slime through a city where very few people have ever seen such a thing without causing a giant scene?" and the corollary question of "Would it be better/funnier if there were a giant scene?"

Rereading parts of Tonic and Fever to maybe do some light editing/start outlining the next chapter, and man... they really are cute... in ch4 especially...
Vezrik doing whatever he can to get a palpable reaction out of Alluvion because he's petty and annoyed that he has these pesky biological imperatives for Alluvion to manipulate, and Alluvion doesn't (at least, not in the ways Vezrik is used to)
Alluvion getting embarrassed when this does, in fact, happen, when they were so zeroed in on taking care of Vezrik
Vezrik getting into it and saying things like "if you stop I'll die" and then reassuring an amused Alluvion that it's hyperbole, "but don't test it!"
(Honestly, all the banter they have in this chapter is really satisfying to reread. Tooting my own horn but the characters I created to have chemistry have chemistry. :v)
Alluvion thanking Vezrik as if he's done them a favor, which Vezrik finds a strange concept, but as soon as he privately acknowledges that maybe it does mean something important to them, he must hurry to shove bread sticks into his purse remind himself that it's not gonna be his business anyway because he's definitely leaving and not coming back, right now
I might actually be able to start writing about Vezrik and Alluvion again soon, too. 😭 I still care about them very much, but I got so, so stuck. I think if I were just starting it now, I might have structured the story a little bit differently.
But I started it on a complete whim, and it was the first thing I was actively working on after like 5 years of almost-nothing, sooooo. It is what it is.
The main thing I have to decide now is whether there will be a humorous smuggling-Alluvion-into-town-in-a-cart interlude or if we start after the fact and gesture at it.

It brings me great joy, but he also has an axolotl, and I haven't seen it since I gave him the turtle. What am I supposed to do, not give him every single amphibian and reptile I come across?
(Alluvion has a water flea they dislike but are constantly with anyway. I caught them drawing its likeness in the sand.)
